I had the opportunity to participate in the LTA's Future SG Focus Group Discussion yesterday, and I'm glad to have been able to quote many parts of your videos when explaining my points about why we should pedestrianize streets and make cycling safer and more comfortable. I'm also really delighted to say that most of the participants were really supportive of a walkable and cyclable Singapore - even those who drive for their daily commute. Thank you for making these well-researched, informative, and entertaining videos. When - and I say "when", not "if" - Singapore becomes a more walkable and cycling-friendly city, I hope you and the work you have done will forever be remembered by Singaporeans as one of the pioneers of this massive transformation. Keep up the commendable work!

Kampong Glam definitely needs this. In fact, they should do this to every shophouse district in SG

That looks great! We really need to stop seeing everything as being developed around the car. It looks like a much better place to live being transformed into a woonerf. I think the culture in Singapore fits the woonerf much better than here in the Netherlands. People here tend to stay inside more and you dont see that much local restaurant or shops. Good for the kids though!

As a graduating civil engineering student in Canada, who wants to transition my career path into urban planning and design and misses my childhood living in walkable Asian cities, this channel hits all my interest spots. Singapore has long been a truly fascinating urban environment to me, I really enjoy how you do a great job with providing contexts and sources in your videos. Instantly subscribed.

I absolutely love your channel. Finally urbanist content that doesn’t just focus on North America and the Netherlands

on a similar note, i'd love if you made a video discussing about the HDB Tengah project and if you think it's the right direction for future Singapore! i find the totally car-free surface is interesting as an evolution of the typical woonerf infrastructure
@gibson45012 жыл бұрын
i second this!! it'd be an interesting point of discussion where this car-free planning could be neutralised by the tengah airbase, especially with the relocation of payalebar airbase to make tengah not as liveable as marketed. thankful for the insights with each of your vids!

Reminds me of Barcelona's superblock but with more sympathy towards motorists.

Great video, thank you. Your explanations were extremely clear and using a single street as an example makes all of these principles of safe street design feel real. Here's hoping to many more roads in Singapore receiving this treatment in the future!

I'm so glad you did this! Sometimes I wonder if this was an STB initiative, since I think Orchard Road precinct falls into their purview. Regardless, the authorities could come together to explore private residential areas and/or even HDB driveways to implement local contexts of 'woonerfs' here. Falls right into place when we aim to reduce speed limits in these areas to 30km/h or less to encourage safer and more active streets for all!

Love this channel and the perspective you bring to infrastructure planning and traffic management. Hope the people in the right places see this and learn the lessons you are trying to communicate here!

Great content. You should cover roundabouts. Singapore is great in making unsafe roundabouts like the one in Newton. A turbo roundabout is a great alternative.

Geylang area, Little India, Bugis, Chinatown and CBD areas are all good candidates for woonerf while housing estates need proper infrastructure like traffic lights, zebra crossings and overhead bridges.

Now that I've been to Singapore I can say that there is so much the city could do if it just wanted to. So many streets that you could at least partly give over to the public without inconveniencing drivers much (if at all). I also noticed that there were many people crossing at reds light. Much more than here in Germany (where Jay Walking is perfectly legal but not on red lights). I think that comes from the fact that in Singapore there are just so many traffic lights that are red even when there is no car in sight. Some roads you can't even cross halfway. Plus you have no other way of crossing the street (Make jay walking legal!). I hope your videos will have a big impact on you country

Little India streets are very walkable and I have seen even the cars slowing down without any signal.. However it's not a planned one like Emerald but it's a natural.

I’m a KL resident, so I guess a woonerf would work somewhere maybe in the commercial areas of Bangsar? Or what about Changkat Bukit Bintang or the area around Medan Pasar?
@jun_suzuki422 жыл бұрын
In KL many places can try the concept of woonerf, like Bangsar, Mont Kiara, Sri Petaling, OUG, Taman Desa etc, pretty tired to drive around KL, need more trees too.

Please do a video about Singapore public housing estates
@lzh49502 жыл бұрын
Actually the public housing estates use similar materials for their driveways as Emerald Hill Rd, which looks like concrete blocks. They make it bumpy & noisy to drive anywhere above 15km/h & thus is a traffic-calming measure, & also need less maintenance than conventional asphalt road surfaces
