It's always refreshing to see tourists/foreigners enjoying their time here and being so mind-blown by the things that we (Singaporeans) take for granted at times and see as our daily average norms. It is a reminder that we have lots of things to be proud of over here!

Hi I am a local Singaporean. Some things that are good to know for you after watching this video (Part 1 of 2) 1. The double-decker buses that do city sightseeing tours in Singapore typically have an open top for the upper deck and an enclosed air-conditioned lower deck. It is known as the Big Bus Singapore and is painted maroon in colour. 2. The green double-decker bus that you saw at 0:51 is a regular public bus, a part of Singapore's Public Transport Network. 3. At 1:29, the building that you said that almost looks like it could be a church is actually a historic building called 'Jinrikisha Station' or 'Pulled Rickshaw Station', which was built in 1903 as an administration centre for the rickshaws. There is an actual church behind Shelby at 1:18 called 'Fairfield Methodist Church'. 4. The 'Carrot' in 'Carrot Cake' you mentioned at 5:03 actually refers to the White Radish or Japanese Daikon. The typical orange carrots that we know are known as ' 胡萝卜 (Hú luó bo)' or 'Red Carrot' in Chinese while the White Radish is known as '白萝卜 (Bái luó bo)' or 'White Carrot' in Chinese. White Radish is mixed with rice flour and water and then steamed to create a white "Carrot Cake". This steamed "Carrot Cake" is chopped into bite-size pieces and then fried together with beaten eggs, preserved radish and other seasonings. The final product is known as 'Fried Carrot Cake'. Stalls typically serve black and/or white versions. The black version includes sweet sauce mixed in while cooking to impart sweetness and colour to the dish. White version excludes the sweet sauce.

Also fun fact, those shophouses that you have walked past, the walkway in front of the shophouses is uniquely Singaporean. During colonial times, it was part of city planning and regulations that shophouses had to include a five foot way for shelter from the sun or rain. Literally five feet wide. That’s why shophouses in Singapore are almost perfectly in line.

Just to clarify - chewing gum is not illegal here in sg. In fact you can get certain chewing gums from pharmacies and our authorities actually allow for the sale of nicotine gums for the good souls who decides do quit smoking. What is illegal is that regular folks cannot import or sell chewing gums and yes, irresponsible disposal of chewing gum will get you fined.

It is good actually not to have gum sold here. No chewed gum stuck on the pavement, lamp post nor under tables etc. Most people just look uncouth chewing gum with their mouth opened while walking around anyway. I never understand why Westerners deem it bad manners when other races chew with their mouth slightly open when having their meals and insisting that the right etiquette should be to chew with lips shut yet they are okay with themselves chewing gum with mouths opened while walking around the streets.

(Part 2 of 2) 5. At 7:04, you mentioned that bottle that you were pouring is vinegar soy sauce, but I have to kindly correct you on that point. It is not vinegar soy sauce. It is actually called Chinkiang Vinegar, which is a Chinese black-coloured rice-based vinegar. 6. Singapore imports durians from Malaysia, that's why you can find stalls selling durians like at 11:32 in Singapore. 7. There are single-deck buses in Singapore as well. Hopefully you are able to see some single-deck buses in your subsequent days in Singapore. 8. Actually Singaporeans don't really follow the dedicated cycling lane thing. Bike and Walk means that lane is a shared lane (for both cyclists and pedestrians). You will find Singaporeans walking on the Cycling Lane and Cyclists riding their bikes on the Walking Line. It is perfectly normal in Singapore, don't be alarmed by it. The typical unwritten rule is that as long as you keep to the left side of a 1-way or 2-way walking path, you will be safe. Singaporean cyclists will typically ring their bells to let people know of their presence and for pedestrians to give way to them by keeping left.

Chewing gum is NOT illegal in Singapore. Only the import and sale of chewing gum by individuals or businesses is. They sell nicotine gum in drug stores. The urban myth is that teen vandals used to stick chewed gum on train doors etc, which caused a lot of inconveniences. So they outlawed it but never repealed it decades later. But you’d still find many kids chewing gum somehow. So it’s not illegal.

You just missed one of the best hawker centres around, Maxwell Hawker Centre, at the first minute of this video. It’s the one just by the traffic lights where you were when you saw the double decker green bus

Chew gum is not illegal. Importing & selling gum are.

Welcome to Singapore! The most common misconception of tourists lol. It is not illegal to chew gum in Singapore. You just can't sell them (you could only purchase legally from pharmacies for "medical" kind like dental and nicotine). Finally I see a youtuber visiting the Chinatown Complex. Majority of tourists missed this largest hawker centre in Singapore and walk all the way to other hawkers.

Even if you bring chewing gum from Johor, it's still considered illegal in Singapore. The ban applies to all chewing gum, regardless of where it was purchased. It's best to avoid bringing chewing gum into Singapore to avoid any legal issues.

At the first traffic light crossing in your video, once you cross the road on your right, is the famous Maxwell Food Centre. You missed it. In it, there are far more good food than other hawker centres. The Tian Tian Chicken Rice is Michelin rated too, expect to queue for at least 30 mins but if you go there early like 10:30 by the time you get your food its lunch time 😂 happy hunting 😊
