Just to add on 1 thing, Singaporeans are generally a passive, keep to ourselves lot. If you are lost or you have no idea what the menu says, go ahead and ask any passer-by, people will generally be more than willing to help. Not many will walk up to you and offer help.

Yes, I found that to be the case with Singaporeans. They are a reserved lot. They will _not_ break the ice with you, but if you take the initiative and break the ice with _them,_ that's when they open up. (Taxi drivers and shop vendors in the more touristy parts of town may be a bit different, jut like anywhere else in the world.)

Go to Chinatown or if you are too busy during the day. Visit our only 24 hours department store here in Singapore called Mustaffa Centre. You can buy literally everything from food to toiletries, carpets and even stationary items. Good luck and have a blast when you are here.

Tourists must not miss the Sentosa Island, Zoo, Bukit Candu WWII historical site, national museum, et cetera. The easiest way to travel on other than the buses/trains, is using the grabcar app. Singapore's rain come and go, almost every day. Having a foldable umbrella or cheap poncho is recommended.

Attaché The hawker centre is indeed quite unque to Singapore. The food court is just a more expensive version of it. In the 50s to 60s, people wash and cook the food on makeshift carts along the streets (eg. chinatown) but the authority felt this was unhygienic and disorderly. So these hawkers have been moved into spanking new food centre during the early 70s I think ,like those you visited. The congregation of hawkers in one place thus become known as "hawker centre". The prices are still reasonably priced and there are great varieties to choose from. What'd I miss about Singapore each time I'm away for extended period? The food, undoubtedly. :-)

Good, accurate tips. Update: Uber has left Singapore. Grab had a monopoly for a short while, and then Go-Jek entered the market. Taxi fares have been rationalised - most of the fees and surcharges have been removed. But go with Grab or Go-Jek. You can agree to the fare upfront before you book.

Myriad of cultural places in Singapore! You should visit the different enclave/neighbourhoods in the city because I would say that all of them have a unique character. Also, try making friends with a local and go house-visiting during Chinese New Year or to the Geylang Bazaar during Ramadan period. Its gives you a fresh perspective on the Singaporean way of life. Orchard Road is splendid for shopping, lots of options. And there are plenty of nature reserves and parks littered all over the island.

virgogirl684 This is great advice, thanks!

virgogirl684 Geylang is like the wild wild west. It's sleazy in the sense that it's a red light district with some foreign women in the streets offering their services. You could see "bargains" going on between men and women as you drive past. Orchard Rd to me is not that great, basically selling more of the same thing, as do most other shopping malls in the suburbs. But compared to other countries, SG is still among the safest countries to walk past midnight. But as in elsewhere, avoid the quiet non-lit lanes. Low crime doesn't mean no crime.
@virgogirl684
@virgogirl684 9 жыл бұрын
Not that Geylang, there is another stretch where the festivities take place during the Ramadan period.
@ymhktravel
@ymhktravel 9 жыл бұрын
virgogirl684 That one you are talking about is geylang serai, around haig rd area. That area has a higher malay popn, maybe that's y the ramadan festivities r held there. Geylang, with all their Lorongs 1, 2, 3...is another place, but close by. I think the even-numbered lorongs are mostly prostitution houses whereas the odd-numbered one are residents. it's funny that women who live in that area have been mistaken too often for pros by leery men prowling the area. LOL

Nice, quick review. You'd need 10X as much time to properly cover Singapore. One quick tip, get out of the city. Venture on the bus or MRT to one of the "New Towns" like Toa Payoh (one of the oldest) to Bishan (one of the newest and most desirable) and see how Singaporeans live. Prices are lower. Food is often better, and shopping can be better too. And take some time to breathe in some fresh air in a place like Bishan Park, East Coast Park or on Sentosa

I live here, i think you could have one of the best natural experiences in Singapore as well. off the main island is Pulau Ubin, which is a small island with a very old village. it's very accessible, and there is a 100-hectare wetlands located on the south-eastern tip of Pulau Ubin called Chek Jawa, which is stunningly beautiful at low tide with lots of marine life (one of the most diverse in South East Asia). Definitely worth a visit, and it's so easy to get there. Hop on any bicycle at the island's rental (which is dirt cheap) and you are good to go.

It is a GORGEOUS city. We've just been and it is sparkling clean, beautiful and a delight to visit. Chinatown and Little Saigon are high on my list of experiences. We stayed at a reasonably priced hotel on Hongkong Road in the Charles Quay area and it was a great location. Minutes from the MRT Station at Charles Quay and Chinatown. The city is pricy but you can get away with a cultural experience worthy of many beautiful memories without going full-on baller! I will be back Singapore

The bus is actually a better way to get into town than the MRT, because you're more likely to find seats available there. With the MRT, you can sit on the train between the airport and Tanah Merah station, but then you'll have to switch to another train to the city and every time I go, I have to stand for the rest of the way (which is like 20-25'). Also, always remember to bring your tissue/napkins with you. They don't have any napkins there at the hawker center.

I'm going to Singapore for a week in 3 months time, can't wait! Also, I look forward to hopefully finding a Brunei Dollar in my change, which I will keep upon returning home.

I used to visit Sin once 2 years ago and still surprisingly impressed by the vast quantities of useful tips and recommendations that you provided. By the way, this is the ultimate in traveling guide i suppose. Nice work and keep doing ^^

No complaints. But heard more than could see. I think the seeing part is better left for us to discover. Thank you for such a wonderful conversation with so much Singapore in your senses :)

Love the video! Will definitely recommend this video to visitors, thank you for doing this! :) (I've commented on Reddit too!) Just a correction though, acceptance of credit card for payment is not required by the relevant authorities. You may pay with cash, credit card, NETS, or EZ-Link card, subject to the availability of such payment devices in the taxis. An Admin fee may apply. Some drivers cherry-pick passengers, mostly giving priorities to passengers whom pay cash; so if you're in a rush, pay cash!

Just to clarify about the gum, it's ok to chew and even bring it in to Singapore as long as you dispose of it properly and don't bring large bulks of it. I sometimes do bring back a pack or 2 I bought while on vacation in Malaysia and haven't had any problems. I'm a Singaporean.

SINGAPORE - For the fourth year running, the Republic has been ranked the most expensive city for expatriates and business travellers, ahead of Hong Kong and Zurich, according to a bi-annual survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

6 dollars for a beer? Not a chance! Raffles, where you filmed and had a beer was over 20 dollars when I went last month! That being said great guide as always, and a great city, if you want to do it on a budget stick to the hawker centres. Also be prepared for the humidity if you live in a cold country!
