Singlish is English with a mix of the different official languages of the country. It doesn't just add a lot of Chinese words. Other languages also come into play. The example you use (the particle -lah) is grammatically accurate in Malay, by the way. The Indian language? Tamil. We love our languages and our people.

You should put a little more emphasis on the temperature itself rather than "it's pretty hot". I'm from a tropical country, so I was kinda expecting a 40° ~ 50° hot, and if Google isn't lying, Singapore is like 25° ~ 30° basically all year, which for me is pretty comfortable. But other than that, that's a pretty informative video :)

Something to note about credit cards. Bring a MasterCard. They don't accept the other types at many locations due to some law requirement with card security and the machine for swiping. Taxi driver at airport explained that to me when I asked why a lot of places don't accept visa and other cards.
@YellowProductions

Not quite correct. Visa is not accepted in taxis because Visa tried to stop the taxi companies from charging that 10% surcharge (which would be illegal in the EU), and yanked out that payment option when the taxi companies refused to relent. Otherwise, visa is accepted in most places which accept mastercards. Just be cautious about Amex, which is not as popular. Finally, the ez-link card used for public transport can be used in taxis too, but there is a $0.30 surcharge.

Interesting! Thank you for that tip! Conversely, in South America we found that Visa is the standard and MasterCard was harder to use.

Singlish is just like all the four languages combined 😂😂 for Taxis, there's different colours which represent like how much they charge. Usually the blue and yellow ones can give you a good deal, usually cheap around 7 to 10 dollars. Silver, black and white are usually "express" which you'd pay more. Not big of a change with the taxis, just the price rates. Also you'll get lucky if you have an uncle driver, they're the best talkers! Can tell you where the good places to eat and short cuts you can travel too!

There are places in Singapore which are known for better exchange rate like The Arcade @ Raffles Place ( for Euro and USD ) , People's Park Complex in Chinatown ( for Asian countries ). These buildings usually have tons of money changers so it would be better for travelers to compare there.

Sometimes rain is our worst enemy, cuz short showers brings the heat off the ground into the air, making it even hotter. 😦 Tap water is drinkable, if in dire situations, but there's pretty much water coolers (where you can drink from) everywhere near tourists spots 😉 Dont forget to bring a bottle of water around.

Hello. I do agree with you regarding not exchanging money at the airport. Often airport anywhere in the world give about five cents off the value. Orchard road also gives a slightly lower rate than other exchange shops in sg. However, most exchange money shops in sg give a high rate compared to any bank in the world. Often the rate is higher than western union or the same. I mention western union as western union does give at least 2-3 cents higher than any western bank. Plus when using a bank atm, you are charged fees. Normally there are two fees, 1. the international bank fee and 2. A fee by your bank. Normally is about 20 dollars and low rate. I am aware there are ways around this but for the majority people simply use their atm card. My strong advice to anyone traveling is to simply exchange at a money changer. The exchange rate is clearly visible for you. If u have no cash for whatever mishap, can simply western union yourself. There is a fee but that fee is lower than any bank and exchange much higher than any bank.

It should be a 50% surcharge not 50cents. Also, Uber is quite cheap here, especially with UberPool, but we do have this app called Grab you might want to check out, many Southeast Asian cities use Grab, its sorta like the Uber of ASEAN.
@Patroclus27

not to mention, if you rather be in a taxi, Grab is the easiest way to get a taxi. But they do also have pooling options and uber-like private car options as well.

thanks. last time i was there i went to most places you have recommended. i love my stay.. quick question tho for my next trip where did you buy that ezlink card? costumer service in changi? where can i load it? last time i was there i was just using taxi for transportation. even tho taxi drivers are so kind in giving me direction. he keep saying next time i go to sentosa just take the mrt and get off at harbour centre. good day. always be safe.

lanz ortiz you can get a ez link at the stations itself at the customer service areas and there are machines for you to top up the cash inside.

ahm.. does all station has costumer service areas? coz i didn't see one on the station under marina bay sand or i just didn't look enough. yeah i saw there was machines there to buy per ride tickets just put in your destination and then put some cash in it. haha but i didn't try it since i wuss out and got scared. i'm not so familiar with the mrt routes i was nervous to get lost. haha i just took the cab. good day.thanks anyway for the reply you probably are singaporean.

lanz ortiz Yupp SG girl here 😄😄 anyways all stations have a customer service area normally located right at the area where you scan your card to get in. Sometimes there are also service crews around to help out people during the peak hours too. It's really easy to use the directions too so no need to be afraid and you don't always have to reach your destination exactly , and you can always top up your tickets and actually get a discount on the sixth time!! But yah cabs are always easier to travel and they get exactly where you need to be , so good choice !!👍🏻👍🏻 Anyways good luck on your future trips to Singapore !! 😁😁😁

I lived there for a long time. He never mentioned that it is nigh on impossible to get a taxi when it's raining.

no longer so, due to multiple online taxi apps, it is certain to get a cab anytime, but the cost will vary.

@@johntse8655 I made this comment 3 years ago, there were not so many apps then. Anyway, nice to hear things are getting easier.
