Thanks for the detailed and insightful comments, Yosh and Iku. The Chinatown Light-Up ceremony is on 10 January. The people in charge were testing the street light-up and lanterns on the day that I went, so I was lucky to be at Chinatown on the right day. From 10 January, huge crowds will descend on Chinatown and the ambience will be very different.

Yes Jim. I will be back again a couple of times, each time with a different emphasis. The finale will be on CNY eve where the streets here will be packed shoulder-to-shoulder with locals and tourists. CNY decorative items and goodies will be sold at rock bottom prices.

There isn't any for chinese new year. The next fireworks will be on 7 & 8 Feb at the end of each night's Chingay Parade. Location is between Bay East and the Flower Dome.
