As a casual fan of classical, I’m not sure what it is I love so much about her playing. Practically speaking, there are obviously many virtuoso violin players like Midori, Hahn, Etc. But for whatever reason, I don’t feel the connection to the music like I do when I hear Chloe play. I wonder what it is, the fun TwoSet connection, being a prodigy, or what. But her playing sounds so pure and I love it.

To me, her pacing is what makes me connect to her. She's never in a rush. She always has plenty of time to approach the next note a good as she can. She is capable of playing the most technically challenging pieces, but seems to be only interested in the musical aspect. Technique is purely a tool, never a goal with her. Those are my 2cts.

Today, the 13th of April, is the 3rd anniversary of Chloe's recital in the first round of the Menuhin Competition. As she stepped on to the stage, she could have had absolutely no inkling of how her life would be transformed over the next few days, let alone of what she would go on to have achieved by now. Although she performed the Bach with which her recital began extremely beautifully, it is clear that she did not enjoy the self-belief and on-stage well-being that is manifest in even her semi-final performance four days later, to say nothing of the magic she conjured up in the final. That her recital turned out to be so well received must have been a huge boost. How fitting then that we can celebrate its 3rd anniversary by delighting in the world class Mozart she gives to us here, and that views of her performance in the Menuhin final will pass 5 million tomorrow! How fitting too that she is going to revisit Bach-for the first time, I believe-when she performs BWV 1017 at the Copenhagen Summer Festival this August! Her so doing will surely prove that she is as great an interpreter of Bach (and the Baroque) as we now know her to be of Mozart (and the Classical). (Her “2018 Winners” recital, which is to be streamed on 18 May on the Menuhin Competition’s channel, features three completely pieces; and, not to be outdone, her Festival recital features four more! Her program is here www.copenhagensummerfestival.dk/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/2021-08-13-Chloe-Chua.pdf Amazingly, the Festival features not only Chloe but Alexandra Dovgan too! This is beyond all reason. One miracle is hard enough to get one’s head round, but two in the same place at the same time?! Yet the Festival is ridiculously cheap. A Partout ticket giving entry to every recital over the whole 10 days costs just £79! Full details are here. www.copenhagensummerfestival.dk/

For those of us who have been following Chloe since the Menuhin competition in 2018, we each have our favorite pieces. Most people remember Menuhin 2018 for Chloe’s enchanting performance of Vivaldi’s Winter, but I was more impressed by her renditions of Hubay’s Carmen Fantasie Brillante and Piazzola’s Café 1930 during the semi-finals. IMHO those renditions are some of the best I have heard - mature, measured and with tempi at the cutting edge. When she performed the violin solo of Bartok’s Romanian Folk Dances at the Atlanta Festival Academy later that year, her feet barely touched the ground as she sat in the first violin chair, but the precision and ease of her bowing technique was clearly visible even through the long lens of the camera that recorded this performance. When 12-year old Chloe returned to the Atlanta Festival the following year to perform Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy, I swear I heard her violin breathe between two long phrases and she was totally unphased when the eminent pianist, Gordon Back, had a mishap with page turning. I still like her performance better than the others I have heard. Hans Graf said she is a just schoolgirl until she takes up her instrument. Then she becomes a full-fledged artist. It is astounding that she played this piece so well at 13 years but not surprising at all when you consider all the talent and skill she already possessed from years of disciplined practice.

@@lbchua5733 I don't know if I've captured Chloe's essence - she has an enormous reservoir at her musical core and that is a very private matter into which I really don't want to intrude. We are all very fortunate that she shares some of it with us through her music. I am green with envy that you have been able to attend the SSO live concerts. I was looking at the upcoming concerts and performances scheduled for Victoria Hall as well as the Esplanade and even though they don't include Chloe, just WOW, It is wonderful that Chloe has so much support in Singapore and I am sure that support includes people who are advising her about her study abroad in Germany. Her skill level is already so high, am not so sure that a number of the "great" teachers out there would necessarily help her tap that musical reservoir even though these teachers might be very good for other students striving so hard to get into the elite category of violin soloists on the world stage. Am also not so sure that she needs to enter more violin competitions, including the Queen Elisabeth competition which just concluded - the level of the finalists was extremely high as was the pressure. Perhaps she might consider that and other competitions in the future but my strong personal preference is that she perform with more orchestras, quartets and accompanists in Europe while she is there. The audiences will love her as I'm sure those Europeans who have heard her already do.

Una giovinetta che esprime le proprie competenze musicali al pari di una perla incastonata nella sua conchiglia.Sei un gioiello!🎶🎶🎶👏👏👏👏👏👏🌟🌟🌟🌹

Chloe's performance of Mozart's violin concerto #4 at the Zhuhai competition in 2017, when she was just 10, remains delightful and uplifting. But that she should have transitioned in just three years to such exquisite refinement, sensitivity and command as are on display here is a magnificent achievement. Most if not all of her fans are familiar with the Zhuhai performance, but I suspect many will be surprised to learn that she already has a third Mozart violin concerto up her sleeve - namely, #1 - having performed it at the opening concert of the Festival of Nations in Bad Worishofen in September 2019. I know of no video, but an account in the local press by a very admiring reviewer, who admits to having been somewhat incredulous at what he was witnessing, can be found on-line.

It is a pity that this fantastic rendition has no live audience.

Her high notes tell me virtually everything I need to know. My mean ear tells me she one of very few. Also, she doesn't need to play faster than the music requires. She's truly amazing!

That slow movement is just glorious. Wonderful artist, wonderful orchestra and conductor. We look forward to jam packed auditoriums to listen to Chloe play.

Her playing is so amazingly beautiful and uplifting, almost as much as her smile is. The video of her playing Vivaldi at the airport is the best I have seen of her delightful smiles.

There is no video of Chloe playing Vivaldi at the airport! The video you are thinking of involves not Chloe, but rather Yeonah Kim. Born in 2014, Yeonah Kim is seven years younger than Chloe (who is 13 in this video but 17 now). Yeonah was having a lot of fun at the airport, but like most prodigies, she is very much more serious when performing on stage or in competitions (as you can see in the performances posted on her YT channel). The most magical and enchanting performance ever given by a prodigy is the one that Chloe gave in the final of the 2018 Menuhin Competition Final (junior), when she was 11. If you don't know it, I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is posted on the Menuhin Competition's YT channel.

PS Chloe performed two works in that Menuhin final. The second was Vivaldi's "Winter." At the airport, Yeonah performs the final movement of Vivaldi's "Summer." A video of Chloe likewise performing it on stage as part of a live concert, when she was 15, is posted both on this channel and on Chloe's channel. The whole concert was recorded and released as a cd, Chloe's first album!

I really hope to be able to listen to her perform here in Vienna in the future. The Musikverein's Golden Hall would be appropriate in my opinion 🥺

Yes, you are right. Chloe's Mozart is deserving of such a magnificent and historic setting, no question. These days she is also a master of late Romanticism. Her performance of Chausson's Poeme two days ago as part of the entertainment at this year's Menuhin Competition is similarly monumental (as indeed is the rest of her recital). kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmO2pJuBgJKKsMU

I played this concerto 35 years ago for an exam, but I played another cadenza, written by a professor of the violin from Leipzig, Mr. Thiemann. The other concertos by Mozart are technically mor difficult. I still remember well. I watch already for a long time, that the after-growing violinists practize and play firstly always all these virtouos pieces from the 19. century (Saint-Saens, Ysaye, Paganini, Vieuxtemps usw.) and then come the great concerts from the 18. and 19. century: Bach, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Bruch, Beethoven, Dvorak, Brahms. Perhaps, these pieces are really the most beautiful ones , what there are as sheets for concerto musik for the violin. Chloe plays very mature and musically.
@jackburgess85793 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! That Chloe is miraculously gifted musically has always been clear even in her performances of technically demanding pieces such as Sarasate's Carmen and Wieniawski's Variation on an Original Theme. But Mozart tests an instrumentalist's musicality to the absolute limit, and on this occasion Chloe passes it flying colours that I think none of her peers can match. (As you say, ditto Bach. The Bach with which she began her recital in the first round of Menuhin 2018 likewise exudes fantastic musicality. It is surely no accident that she is going to revisit Bach--for the very first time I believe--in her 13 August recital at the Copenhagen Summer Festival.)

I have miscalculated myself. It is even 37 years ago. 1984! But is is really not so imported, at each case it is rather long ago.
