The Singer 29K171 boot patcher is an amazing machine that's a tried and true design.
This video covers some basics such as bobbin winding and installing, needle installation, threading and basic use.
A standard sewing machine generally feeds in two directions, with some exceptions, forward and backwards. This machine can be 'steered' in any direction without the need to turn the work. You can let the machine walk its way around the work. This is useful for patching leather and other heavy materials.
The very small size of the arm allows the arm to be inserted into a boot or shoe so it can be repaired and/or patched.
