Hello, I just picked one of these up yesterday. It is in terrific shape for being 64 years old. I truly appreciate your videos. I find your camera detail and commentary to be among the best on KZbin for this particular subject. So much so, that one of the criteria for me choosing a particular model is based on whether you've made a video on it! Because I feel more confident I can assess and fix issues that might be present by reviewing your videos. So, if you haven't heard it lately... you are appreciated!

Thanks for sharing your extensive knowledge. Your videos gave me confidence to tackle bringing a 306k back from an extended neglected time. I found to clean it, I used RP7 (WD40) sprayed over the machine. That way if a little got into an oil hole it didnt really matter. In fact I did use RP7 to get it moving as it was idle for so long it was frozen solid. RP7 all over, inside and into the oil galleries and after an hour or so it just came free with very little force. A short run and then a full lube with correct oil while I detailed the entire machine. It now looks, runs and sounds like new!

I have a 401a sewing machine that was so heavily used the paint was worn away by the thread on the bottom front of the nose.

Great video, I noticed the replacement bulb you fitted is longer and therefore lines up with the glass lens better. Are these still available and if so can you tell me the bulb type please? many thanks from the UK.
@InStitches Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I haven't seen any of the long bulbs new for a long time. I have a stash of used long ones I use for machines like this.

For some odd reason the bobbin tension on the Singer #401 and the #500 is always tight underneath.. When Singer introduced the "Auto-Reel or early Touch and Sew" machines they placed a device that "followed" the thread ( It was a "ring" mechanism ) and they produced the best zig zag and satin stitches.. I know many people do not care for those machines, but they ( early models ) were well made and produced a great stitch..

This might be of help. You could try removing the motor from the good machine to see how easy these motors are to remove. This makes for easy service of the worm drive gear. I think the bad machine was dropped and broke the castings. I've enjoyed this video, thanks

Great insight into how to restore these classic machines, the cleaning is fine no need to make longer, the mechanical expertise is what most people value because that is a specialised skill that most do not posses. Thank you !

I totally agree. The colours are striking on the machine but 5he kiwi cricketers look great in those colours.

Considering the fact that I was cleaning and oiling mine along with you I could have seen even more detail without complaint. Unlike you I don't have a second machine that I can use the parts from. Thanking for sharing.
