Thank you so much for posting the videos for replacing the gears and adjusting the timing. Not only was I able to replace the gears for my Singer 630 Touch and Sew, but I was able to adjust the timing all by myself. Makes me so happy to have saved money on a machine that would have probably cost a pretty penny to have serviced.

Too bad I didn't find your video until I had already replaced all five gears in mine. I had to reverse-engineer it on the fly! It was quite a job but the designers made it so there is only one way it can be put together correctly, so it was like a big 3D puzzle that had to be solved. I got it together and found a good video on setting the needle timing, so my old Singer is now running like a sewing machine!

Can you install the early 620 metal gears as replacements into the later 620 then 630, 640? I have the 640 and looks like the plastic gears sold are for same as your 620 so I was just curious. What were the big changes in the 640 besides the vacuum needle threader & pedal & speed switch?

You might be able to install them. I wasnt aware of the metal gears, however I have found very slight differences in the sizing that did affect the meshing of the gears

The # 640 had "speed baste", "needle up" and built-in buttonholer, plus the torque of the solid state motor.. You are going to spend all day putting a metal gear on the upper horizontal shaft ( lots of parts to remove ), and then meshing metal gears is a horrible chore. Back in the day, Singer would not permit their repairmen to touch the meshing of metal gears. They were "matched" at the factory and "run in" at high speed ( an external power source ), with an abrasive compound ( this was flushed away with a solvent ).. Now you know why they started using nylon gears...

@@1953childstar thank u i was wondering why the replacements are not metal. now that the plastic on one of the original gears on my 620 has just broken off completely.

@@cxqcxq5176 Cost is one factor and the fact that the "Singer Company" no longer exists - It is now a Chinese conglomerate that owns the names of Viking, Pfaff, and Singer. They want to sell new machines and could care less if someone has parts to restore a machine made years ago. When "Singer" existed as an American company, repair parts were available. The other issue is that to replace the poly/nylon gears, all gears must be replaced, including the difficult upper horizontal gear ( The entire upper shaft would need to be replaced ). Meshing metal gears is an impossible task for someone who is not "Singer factory trained".. The gears need to be carefully meshed and "run in" at high speed with an abrasive paste and the paste needs to be removed with a solvent… Not a task for an amateur. The "Chinese made" replacement plastic gears are not quality items. I can chip off a gear tooth with my fingernail.

I was trying to send you a pm, but youtube change it sometime ago and I don't know how anymore. Any way I have a touch and sew 640 and 620 singer. Now on the 620 the bottom gear drive crumble and is no more. But my 640 the bobbin doesn't turn but when I open it up and turn it by hand it move like it should. This 640 is different from the 620, can you give me any advice on how to get these two great machines working. In His Grace, ellescrapper
