My mother-in-law was a fantastic seamstress. Me, I can’t sew (xcept zippers not sure why that is) I hate sewing therefore I don’t sew unless I have to. My mother-in-law gave me 2 featherweights one is a 221 the other a 221K. When I would try to sew something the bobbin thread kept getting jammed up. I finally decided to do something about it so I watched your video , followed it to a “t” and then some. I ended up taking the bottom off to get to the thread sure enough there was about a 3 inch piece of thread wound around the outer housing of the bobbin. So thank you I never could’ve done it without your instruction. I feel so good about fixing it that now I’m going to attempt to fix my old pellet ice maker. Wish me luck✌️😎

It worked! The “handy” gene skipped me completely. I have NO mechanical aptitude. But I watched your video and it was so clear and concise that I was able to get the assembly apart and find the tiny piece of thread that was causing my problem. I did have to douse it with oil and let it sit for 24 hours but the machine is purring again! Thank you!

I feel as though I have found a new Featherweight friend. This demonstration gave me the information and confidence to ‘service’ one of my Featherweight machines. Even though the bobbin was the actual ‘trouble maker’ I now know that I can likely fix things for myself. By the bye, using a micrometer, the bobbin measured a depth/height of .324 and it was being pushed out of the case around stitch number 8; replacing it with a bobbin measuring .287 gave a perfect stitch. Thank you!

Thank you for this wonderful video. My wife has a Singer 221-1 that we got from my mother. I think it dates from 1941. She stopped using it a few months back, telling me that the bobbin was not feeding correctly. Over two decades ago, there was a sewing machine repair shop not far from our home. I always took it there when it had a problem. I think the owner retired and closed the shop. I have not been able to find another shop since. I know almost nothing about the sewing machine but I do have two engineering degrees. I thought this couldn't be that hard. I quickly learned that the machine was locked and I no idea of why it locked. I opened a few of the access panels but didn't see any obvious item that would lock it in place. I did find a thread sticking out of the bobbin mechanism and found that I could not pull it free. I knew there was a problem there but had no idea that this two inches of thread could lock the whole machine. I could not see an obvious way to disassemble the bobbin base, so I decided to do a KZbin search. I put in "singer 221-1 sewing machine tutorial" and found your video to be about fourth in the list. I could not be believe my luck in finding your video as the first one I watched. It was my exact problem. I had to hunt around for my set of jewelers screwdrivers but once I have them, getting the clip opened was very easy. I appreciate your tip to NOT use any metal instruments to free up the base. I would probably been tempted to go after it with pliers. It took a couple of minutes to "finesse" the bobbin base out but once I did, I found the inch worth of thread that was jamming the whole works. After reassembly, the machine checked out fine. I passed along your hints about how to prevent the jam to my wife. I think the sewing machine will be good for another 80 years.

Hello, Carmon! You are my new best friend! As someone below mentioned, I'm sewing masks for my community and my little featherweight jammed. I did all the things I knew how to do and nada. I would probably have tried to take it to somebody, but in these times with stay-at-home orders in place and only essential businesses open, I knew that wasn't an option. I did a search for Singer 221-1 bobbin jam and your video appeared. Did everything you said, in the order you said it and got the little teeny tiny piece of thread out, put it back together and am on my way. I cannot thank you enough for posting this video. I'll be looking at others to learn how to keep my little machine in tip-top shape. I have another much fancier machine that I never use, as I love this little machine best. My grandmother worked for Singer and got this machine for my mother in 1948 just two years after she was married. She gave one to her other daughter-in-law and my cousin still uses it. We both have the wooden card table that has the cut out for the machine to fit down flush with the surface of the table. I want to keep this Featherweight in good condition for ever. Thank you for sharing your expertise. It is very generous of you so to do. Please go to my website, www.janetburgan.com to hear some of my music while you're fixing sewing machines! Peace, Janet

It's 02.40 am. I have tried everything but my Singer 221 is totally stuck. I saw some little bit of thread in the bobbin case area. I took the needleplate off and put it it back several times, I tried to reach the thread but could not. I was totally clueless. Now I found your video. I lifted my Featherweight on the top, gave the bobbin case area a good dose of sewing machine oil, and finally I can go to bed. I really hope I can manage to get my machine to function tomorrow. Greetings from Finland and thank you very much!

Hi Carman. A million thanks for this tutorial. I've fumbled my way through many operations, and have to say your video is the clearest and easiest to understand, one watch, one refresh and Fiona Featherweight is purring like a lovely kitty. One small thread and some very gunky things around the feed dogs when the plate came off... she is clean with a tiny drop of oil and stitches are perfect! I love being able to care for my machine.. AWESOME site :)

Thanks for posting this, I had cleaned and oiled my 222 and it was sewing great. So I was cleaning up for the day and pushed in my sewing chair and it hit my pedal and the machine started sewing. And what a mess I have. So ladies remember to be very careful pushing in your chair and always unplug your machine first if you are finished for the day.

Thank you so very much for your clear tutorial. I thought I had done serious damage to my featherweight but realized, following your directions I could fix it. I needed the pooled oil to loosen the bobbin case (I think that’s the name) and it worked like a charm. Just got a '56 featherweight. I installed a new needle, wound a bobbin and inserted it, threaded it, then grabbed some scraps to test it out... Bottom thread would get caught on something and jammed up... cleared it and tried again a few times, same result. Found/watched this video and checked the machine. Wouldn't you know it, the finger on the bobbin case base wasn't in that slot. Quick fix. I setup the machine again and tested with new scraps by turning the machine by hand, and now I got beautiful stitches. Next up, tension the belt (going to order a new one, and other things, from the shop) so the motor will spin the machine instead of slipping. Thank you very much. Think I'm going to have fun working with this machine.

Thanks much. This worked I was able to remove the small screw but then did the oil immersion trick. My patience is zero so I only waited about 30 minutes but it did loosen up and I was able to remove the piece of thread. I admit I did not remember about holding the threads or the wheel direction. BAD on me. I will try better in the meantime. But then I saw about the thread removal tool. I am a bit confused that the thread will "just disappear" without being removed if you use the tool. Can you clarify? thanks.
