Great tutorial! What kind of needle can I use with this machine, all mine keep hitting the bottom plate
@andytubesewing19532 жыл бұрын
Singer model 457 uses the most common needle in the world; TYPE 15X1 and sizes 9, 11, 14, 16, and 18. Chances are you have the correct needle. There are a couple things that can cause the needle to hit the "bottom plate", which I think you are calling the rotary hook under the needle plate. If the needle bar has slipped and is at the wrong height it can cause needle strikes. Here is a video for checking/setting the needle bar height kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKKpnmhtZaatrcU This model is also known to have a plastic gear on the top of the vertical shaft that has reached the age of failure. When the teeth start cracking off the machine loses its timing and the needle is moving out of "time" to the hook. You can buy a new gear for about $10 and here is a step-by-step video for replacing it; kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2TFd6eii5aMbNU Usually, you can easily check the height of the needle bar and if it is OK (usually is) then you can take the cover off the arm and look for the top gear on the vertical shaft with a flashlight. It's not the best view, but you see if it looks like it is falling apart or losing teeth. I have bought many, many 457 machines for $5 to $15 because they were "broken", and just replaced the gear and cleaned up the machine for sale at $150. Hope this helps a little, Daria, and thanks for watching my channel. Good Luck.

@andytubesewing19534 жыл бұрын
Lucky You! Singer model 437 and 457 are sister machines with mostly the same mechanical features. Model 457 has a "Flat" bed and the model 437 has a "Free Arm" or "Tubular" bed that is narrow and goes from near the upright to just past the needle plate. Model 437 is favored by clothing makers for hemming cuffs and sewing sleeves and collars. Modern crafters love it for sewing small, intricate items. When model 437 came from the factory a detachable bed came with it. The detachable bed can be set around the free arm to convert the machine back into a normal flatbed machine, or it can be unhooked and removed for the free arm style of sewing. A desirable machine and nowadays considered rare. I've never seen a 437 in person. Honestly I am having serious issues with mine. It seems like no matter what I do I can’t keep the thread from bunching up under the fabric. I have played with the upper and lower tensions still no luck! Any advice?
@andytubesewing19536 жыл бұрын
Hi Kayla, welcome to Andy Tube. Thread bunching, or birds nesting, is USUALLY lack of needle thread tension, so you are thinking along the right path. If you do not have a copy of the instruction manual for your 457, please go here to download a free copy: www.singerco.com/uploads/download/5d6ce627c00cb91c477d4703f1b704aab08a72c8.pdf Follow the instruction manual on threading the needle up to the point of taking the thread through the Take-Up Lever. That is at about 2:50 in this video you commented on. Put down the presser bar and foot. This should put tension on the needle thread. To test that you have tension on the thread at this point, turn the tension dial to zero (0) and start pulling the thread end that you put through the take-up lever. There should be barely if any tension. As you keep pulling the thread, turn the tension dial to higher and higher numbers; 2, 4, 6, 8. You should feel the tension getting stronger and stronger as you are turning the dial. This will prove if you have needle thread tension or not. If you have good tension at this point, then continue threading all the way through the needle. Now you want to test the bobbin. Remove the bobbin completely. Might as well use your lint brush in the bobbin holder area now if you have not already done so. Check the bobbin thread to be sure it feeds off the bobbin ok when you pull it and it is not tangled or "pinched" and won't come off the bobbin freely. Be sure it is a class 66 bobbin. (the two end discs are curved, not flat like class 15). If necessary then wind a fresh bobbin. Follow the manual on how to install the bobbin in the correct direction into the bobbin holder and how to thread the bobbin holder. Pull up the bobbin thread and try sewing a straight stitch at number 6 length. If you don't have needle thread tension after threading just through the take-up lever as mentioned above, then you are not getting the thread between the tension discs of the tension unit, OR the indicator part of the tension unit is cracked or broken. When that happens the releasing pin can't push back on the spring to open the tension discs and allow the thread to enter between the discs, therefore no tension on the thread. Starting at about 13:20 of this video I show the indicator and where it can break. It is a different model but same theory. The indicator on the 457 is plastic an is prone to cracking or breaking. kzbin.info?o=U&video_id=IqoXtj-4tFQ If it is cracked you may be able to super glue it together. You may find a vintage replacement part on eBay, or buy a whole new tension unit. Here is a link to my playlist All About Tension: kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKJaeFB_GW97NsW5GYM7KD9U These videos explain tension in more detail and how to remove, inspect, clean, replace and calibrate tension parts. It is a different model machine, vut the tension unit is similar and you will get the idea. If you need more help or have questions, please email my youtube channel email address of andytube53@gmail.com. It would be a better forum to continue troubleshooting your thread bunching. Thanks for watching Andy Tube, and good Luck.

Hi if the bottom stitch is loose do you know how to fix that. I have the top tension all the way to 9
@andytubesewing19532 жыл бұрын
That is normally a sign of lack of upper tension, meaning no tension on the needle thread. When you place the upper needle threading, you must raise the presser foot to relieve the tension on the tension discs so you can slip the thread between any two of the discs. Watch @0:44 where I test that the tension discs are loose by wiggling them. If your tension discs are NOT loose like that you may have a broken crossbar on the - | + indicator dial. That dial is made of plastic and the little bar the tension release pin pushes on can finally break/crack the bar after so many years. If the bar is broken the pin can not push back on the dial and push back on the spring to loosen the tension discs. I show about this in a video you can see here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4XQdZypZdWWo7c If lifting the presser foot DOES loosen the discs then just be sure you run the needle thread thru them and continue threading as in my video. An easy way to test the tension on the needle thread is to put the presser foot back down after you run the thread thru the tension assembly, and just pull on the thread up near the takeup lever. Start with the dial at 4 and just pull the thread up towards your ceiling and you should feel resistance. while pulling the thread slowly just start turning the dial to 5 then 6 then 7 etc. and you should feel more and more resistance as the thread is squeezed tighter and tighter between the discs. By the time you get to 9, it should be hard to pull. If this does not happen for you, then you have a tension problem, right? So maybe the crossbar on the dial broke or maybe the tension unit is dirty and full of lint and that is preventing the discs from squeezing the thread. If needed you can watch this video about removing, cleaning, and installing then adjusting the tension assembly. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoSmimpol69mrpo Those are the most common things that cause your problem, there are others but check these first. If you resolve the issue please let us know how you did it so other viewers who read the comments can learn about it. Thanks for watching my channel, Cupcake, and good luck.

@andytubesewing19532 жыл бұрын
@@cheerprncess Yes, you are welcome. The deal with your machine is it is 50+ years old and no company is making that kind of a part new. Your tension style was used on a few models. The plastic replacement dial I linked to is what most people buy and try to use. Sometimes it requires modification, or the tension release pin requires modification to work perfectly on your particular machine. That has to do with the length of the tension-releasing pin and the tension releasing lever inside the nose of your machine. I also linked to a newly made complete tension unit that is different but many people have found it can work on a number of old Singer machines. You can sometimes find used tension parts on places like eBay, but at the very least they will sell the entire tension unit and not just a part, or like this seller has a tension assembly plus other parts for $40 (yikes) www.ebay.com/itm/334233528959?hash=item4dd1deea7f:g:GgcAAOSw-PZhoTCl Lastly, several of my viewers were able to repair the indicator dial by replacing the missing or broken crossbar with something rigid, like a flat piece of metal or wood or wire, usually glued into place. One fellow sent me pictures of some wire he bent into the letter "e" and was able to press that into the back of the dial and it worked for him. So there you go; 1. repair your broken dial. 2. Try to find a used dial (and hope it is not cracked already) 3. Buy the replacement dial and see if it works or can be modified for your tension assembly to work. 4. Buy the new style complete tension assembly I linked to and see if it works or can be modified. 5 Forget Your 457 and find a nice Model 403A Slant-O-Matic Special and sew with it instead 😊 kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKKyqvdDRwS-9MfLuwSNJTcg "Fortes fortuna adiuvat"

Download the FREE instruction manual for your machine from Singer at this link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=457 Look at the Fabric, Thread and Needle Table on page 15 (all SInger manuals have this table) Your machine is vintage so it talks about cotton and silk thread, but polyester is fine. Your new thicker thread is too big for the eye of your needle so that drag is causing your problems. Use a thinner size thread or a needle with a larger eye. Many sewists like to use "TOP STITCH" needles b/c they have a larger eye and can handle many sizes of thread. You should be using Catalog 2020 needles, now called 15x1 style.

@andytubesewing19533 жыл бұрын
When the hook does not rotate around the bobbin case that usually means the Top Gear on the Vertical Shaft (plastic) has broken. A new gear is about $10 and I made a step-by-step DIY video for replacing it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2TFd6eii5aMbNU (watch at 1.5x speed.) You'll notice the video has 81K views and that shows this is a very common problem with the age of the machine. No worries; you can do it! Thousands of others have. Good Luck.

Andy, I followed the instructions for the bobbin and upper threads, but at 5:50 (when I turn towards me to grab bobbin thread) the needle goes down but stops...it won't come back up even though I'm turning. I've never used this sewing machine before and i noticed the needle that I replaced was broken. Could that be the cause? How do I fix it?
@andytubesewing19534 жыл бұрын
Hi, Malinda. A few possibilities here. The height of the needle could have changed causing a loss of timing to the hook and the needle is at the wrong place and hitting the hook or catching in the hook. Here is a video on needle bar height. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKKpnmhtZaatrcU The timing itself could have gone out and here is a video for that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnKxqpZ6bpWqh8k That's a different model than your 457, but the mechanics are the same. Lastly, model 457 is one of a group of models that is famous for having a weak top gear on the vertical shaft that goes down to turn the pulley/belt/pulley of the hook. The gear is old and gets brittle and the plastic teeth get broken and the timing goes out if the hook even rotates at all anymore. Here is a video for replacing the $10 gear: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2TFd6eii5aMbNU Without having hands on the machine I can only tell you possibilities but watching the videos will help you understand how the parts are supposed to work and allow you to check them to see what is out of sync or broken. If the gear is starting to go out or has broken you for sure will have lost the timing. You can easily retime the machine after installing the new gear if needed. If the gear is OK then it may be the needle bar height or needle point to hook point timing is out, and you can follow the videos to reset those. In rare circumstances, the NB height, timing, and gear can all be perfect and the needle bar position (centering in the needle plate) has shifted and needs realignment. I may not have that exact video but can lead you to a service manual that explains it if that is the problem. You can check the NB height and the timing without making any changes to the machine but just knowing what to look for and my videos will explain that. Good Luck, Malinda, and take care.

hello, I watched this video at the start of this pandemic and have been using the sewing machine since to make masks, but today something happened where when the needle wouldn’t go down. It won’t hook onto the thread on the bobbin like you showed at around 5:32. Usually the handwheel was a bit hard to turn but not super hard, but now since the needle won’t go down, the handwheel has loosened up. I don’t know what to do because I am not an expert and couldn’t find anything online about it. It would be much appreciated if you could help me figure it out!
@andytubesewing19534 жыл бұрын
The needle bar connects to the takeup lever that connects to the counterbalance in the nose that is screwed to the main arm shaft. If the needle is not moving then the arm shaft is not moving. When you put the machine in bobbin winding mode, like 1:55 in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKDOn2Ofjb1pa9E it disengages the handwheel from the arm shaft. The handwheel turn freely to wind the bobbin, but nothing else moves on the machine, including the needle bar. Did you wind a bobbin and forget to turn the smaller knob back to the right to put the machine in sewing mode? Be sure the machine has not slipped into bobbin winding mode. If the needle is going down into the hook area but will not pick up the bobbin thread then the top gear on the vertical shaft could be broken. When that happens (very, very common on your model) the hook stops rotating and you can not sew. I made a video about replacing the $10 broken gear kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2TFd6eii5aMbNU That takes a couple hours to do, so lets hope the machine is just in bobbin winding mode and turning the small knob of the handwheel system gets you back in sewing mode. Good Luck.

Andy Tube The machine isn’t in bobbin winding mode so it would have to be the vertical shaft. Thank You so much!

@@rosielafferty9577 Hope you give it a go and replace that gear. It's a nice machine. Good luck.

My needle goes down but the metal circle around the bobbin isnt spinning while I turn the hand knob (I can manually move it but the metal ring is slow), and no hook pulls across in the video. Is this the same problem as you described?
@andytubesewing19534 жыл бұрын
@@elizabethepps8272 YEs, broken top gear on the vertical shaft. Internationally know problem. Here is my gear replacement video kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2TFd6eii5aMbNU You'll notice it has 50K+ views; that's how common the problem is. The 457 is one of the easier models to replace the gear on and you can do it too 👍✨

@andytubesewing19537 жыл бұрын
Please follow this link to my playlist for model 347. The timing is the same as model 457. I have a video about belt/timing and a slide show of the actual timing documents from my original Service Manual. These instruction are the same for your model 457 and will explain and inform you how to check the timing, and correct it if necessary. Good Luck. kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKJS_4FKPb4bgAbHtYWnexvy
