The top gear on the vertical shaft is broken. In the decade of this model, Singer started using plastic nylon gears on the top and they are old and falling apart now. A very common problem. You can find a gear (new) for about $10 here in the US. I made videos that show step-by-step how to replace the gear. You may want to bookmark this playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKJTjJ3dRTrDPtIqR6DMoaex The videos in the playlist show how to check the top gear and then how to replace it and reset the hook to needle timing, and a couple other settings and lubrication. It is a nice model, and the new gear should last a long time. Good luck, and thanks for watching my channel.

@@firstexperience3 what is on the bottom is a pulley that runs the belt. What turns that totally up on the top is a gear and it is broken. That's the gear you replace. You loosen the gear at the top. Pull the pulley down 2 inches. Take out the gear. Put in a new gear, push the pulley back up and tighten the gear. Now you reset the timing. It's all in the videos I asked you to watch hundreds of people do this themselves by watching the videos

Nice job Andy. That thing is beautiful. I learned something new with the threading of the bobbin thread. Presser foot down and pull on the needle thread pulls the bobbin loop way up and easy to get too. I've always threaded the bobbin thread with the foot up and grabbing the loop from under the foot. Sometimes it's hard to see the thread that way. This way makes it easy. And...thanks again Andy.

Thank you Andy - lovely instructions, with a bit of a chuckle too, and your wonderful close-ups. This is a very handy video. Hmmm... The words "Handy AndyTube" just jumped into my head but I seem to remember a cleaning product called Handy Andy from when I was a kid (I don't know if it's still around). On the other hand - that machine is looking beautifully clean now (and very happy with its lot in life) so yeah - perhaps you are a handy Andytube after all. :-)

Thank you, Megan. Handy Andy is still made by Unilever, South Africa; www.unilever.co.za/brands/home-care/handy-andy/ We never had it in the US though. When I was a kid growing up there was a column in the local newspaper (remember those?) called "Ask Handy Andy" where people wrote in with questions about doing all kinds of things, from auto repair, accounting, cooking, stain removal, just about anything. Handy Andy always had the answers. It was my favorite thing in the newspaper even better than the comics. I thought he was some kind of a wizard b/c he just knew everything. Many years later I found out the column was written by a lady named Andrea and Handy Andy was her pen name.

Greetings, Trevor, and thanks for the good wishes. I've been sloooowly working on a 404 that I will be keeping for my family. A real beauty. I just do a little at a time until tired, then cover it up until next time. I hope to make a slide show of it when finished. Wow, those are 34MPH winds there! Stay dry! Here in the Phoenix area will get some of the effects from Hurricane Hilary, but central Southern California and the South West corner of Aeizona will bear the brunt when it lands as a tropical storm. We had 30+ days of 110F temps 🔥and no measurable rain for 145+ days🌵 ( I quit counting) I hope we get a little rain here if even enough to wash the dust off everything. The weather is so different around the Earth, isn't it? Take care, friend, and be well.

Really helpful video Andy. I'm having trouble with my machine (478) the needle keeps pausing but the motor is still running. Only when I adjust the position of the needle, then the needle moves again and I can sew but it then stops again shortly after. Any ideas what could be the problem?
@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 11 ай бұрын
The needle bar connects to the main arm shaft which is turned by the handwheel/motor belt. If the stop motion screw is loose then the needle bar starts acting erratically like you describe. It may have been loosened to wind a bobbin and not fully turned back to the right to tighten the clamping washer inside..There is a slight chance someone took off the stop motion screw, like to replace the motor belt, and put it back on backward. It feels like you can tighten it to sew, but always spins off a little and gets loose and the needle bar quits. If that happens you can what this video about how to remove/replace the stop motion screw. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHmQhHetjbGEes0

Thank you for a good video. I can't service a sewing machine, but I find your detailed videos fascinating. I have a Singer 600e and have heard it called a "modern" machine. I would like to find out the difference between "modern" and "vintage". It is all metal gears and I have a lot of trouble finding detailed videos about it. Is that because that line has been called "touch and toss" or "touch and throw"? I enjoy hearing about how different machines do things. Thanks again for a good video.
@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 Жыл бұрын
I'd call your 600e a vintage machine. Antique vs Vintage vs Modern is subjective, IMO. I've had a few people tell me that 20 to 100 years old is vintage. Less than 20 YO is modern and over 100 YO is antique. IMO (just me) over 100 is for sure antique, and sewing machines became modern when they started being made with so much plastic. So I feel after 1980 or so would be Modern, from the 1920s thru today Vintage, and before the 1920s back to mid-century, 1800s is antique. Almost 8 years ago my wife bought a Model 603 at a thrift shop for $10 and asked why so cheap? They told her they had been trying to sell it for almost a year and wanted it gone. She asked me to fix it and I did. You can see a short slide show of the parts before I put it back together kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zpe1ZWZ_l9uqd6s The 600 & 600e models replaced the 500A & 503A Rocketeer models. The 603 was an OK machine but I noticed it had many more parts to do basically the same sewing as the 500A. It has a direct drive motor and all steel gears and cam stack, and it is very well made. What I did not like was the bobbin system and bobbins. The bobbin holds much less thread and the "wind-in-place" bobbin system was hard to fix. Way under the bobbin case and hook is a system that lifts the bobbin above the hook for winding, and they really squeezed it in there. The final nut is extremely thin and had cracked. I could not find a replacement as selling used parts on eBay wasn't popular yet. I had to pay someone to make the nut (a $25 bargain price to a machinist) My wife tried the machine and went back to her 301A & 403A after a week. She said it sewed nicely but the bobbin winding/system was a hassle to her. I have since found out many others do not care for the T&S models although I have heard from several who love their T&S machines. I did search KZbin for videos on your model and there are not many at all; mostly about winding and threading it and a cleaning video. I'm not sure how many touch & sew models were made and the total of machines. For me, machines after 1970 at the latest are not worth the effort, but again that's only my opinion. Thanks very much for watching my channel, Bonnie.

Andy hello again hope you are keeping well. I have a problem with an old Singer No28 hand machine, made about 1894 . I can't regulate the needle thread tension. It seems to be two convex washers that trap the thread between them, am I threading the cotton correctly ?, it seems to jam the thread. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong please. Cheers David Kenyon, I will send a foto of the manual, unfortunately there pages missing.

@andytubesewing1953 12 күн бұрын
I've never had the pleasure of working on that model or even seen one in person. I'm aware of that type of Tension Assembly. That early type is the same as later ones but without a number dial. You can download a free copy of the Instruction Manual in PDF format here: ia902909.us.archive.org/31/items/singer-28-user-manual-en/Singer-28_User-Manual_EN_text.pdf The threading info is on Page 8. Be sure the presser foot is raised up, the needle is inserted flat side to the right, and thread the needl4 from left to right. Singer model 128 is basically the same model as the 28 and I did find an adjusters manual in my files, If you'd like a free copy you can email Alan at andymanuals53@gmail.com and ask for Singer 28/128 manuals.

Andy ,please could you tell me how the pressure wheel works on our model 466. Is it 0 for light pressure and 6 for heavy pressure, or is it related to thickness of material to be sewn? Excelente video on threading up by the way.
@andytubesewing1953
@andytubesewing1953 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. I guess you could say it works both ways. Zero is very light. Pressure 6 is very heavy pressure. Of course, if you have very thin fabric, you're going to use less pressure normally than if you have two or three layers of them, it's adjustable for you to figure out what's best. What I usually do is take a scrap fabric of what I'm sewing and just run it through without any thread and see how it goes through. Another way is put the fabric under the presser foot and then tug the fabric towards you. If you can not move the fabric by pulling it. It may be a little bit heavy pressure or ok.If the fabric starts slipping out, it's probably too light. You get the idea. You can get a copy of the original service manual free to download as a PDF from Singer support page at this link kzbin.info/aero/PLsCOZgzzaiKK9GeuGLCo6ZyWv-HbheRVK&feature=shared.
