I only recently learned that Holmes actually wrote The Jets’ 1986 hit “All Over Him”, which unfortunately has a heartbreaking and tragic backstory: He wrote the song for his 10 year old daughter, but unfortunately she was never able to hear it because she passed away suddenly and unexpectedly from an undiagnosed brain tumor. I bawled my eyes out when I read this. My heart goes out to him for enduring such a loss.

Omg Professor...you are killing me. This guy was the coolest dude back in the 70's. I remember seeing this guy on American Bandstand and other music shows. You had to lie and pretend you hated these 2 songs or people would make fun of you. I absolutely loved them. I spent my hard earned allowance to buy them at Camelot Music. I liked him because he had a way with lyrics that drew you in but not until the end of the song would he turn around and say "got cha"...Thanks again because you always help me explain why it was cool to love Rupert. This guy looks identical to what he did in 1975...wow.

This song has always been a favorite. You see, my girlfriend was once dating another guy. This is a very unusual story. First class on the first day of high school, I met the prettiest girl in the Freshman Class. I was instantly smitten. Soon I learned she lived just a hundred yards away from our house. Several times a week, I’d carry her books home for her. Only problem, I was too shy to ask her out. Sophomore year, I finally asked her to the Homecoming Dance. We soon fell in love. A couple all through High School. We both went to the University of Missouri. Freshman year was magical. However, during the following summer, I had major Crohn’s Disease surgery. Doctors put me on high amounts of Steroids. Sophomore year, I was not a nice person. Today it’s called “Roid Rage”. During the summer after our Sophomore year, she fell in love with “Him”. I was devastated. I only learned then from my friends what a huge jerk I had become during the Sophomore year. She shocked me by saying she wanted to date both of us during the start of our Junior year. Like an idiot, I agreed. She would see me in the afternoon and Him in the evening. One day after about two weeks of this arrangement, we were walking to Hatch Hall for our afternoon fun. A hundred yards from Hatch, I stopped and told her I couldn’t do this anymore. I said, “I can’t make love to you in the afternoon knowing you’ll be making love to Him in the evening.” She warned me not to make her choose between the two. I wouldn’t like her choice. I told her that I’m choosing for her. She gets Him. I turned around and walked into Hatch. Did not speak to her again for three years. That weekend I went home and told my parents about everything. They said they weren’t surprised. I said, “What?” They also noted the changes in my personality and had spoken to my doctor. The doctor told them that suspicions were developing about the massive use of steroids. Luckily, a new generation of Crohn’s drugs containing little to zero steroids were just now coming to the market. I began to see why I had lost my Girlfriend. I had driven her away. By Christmas of my Junior year, my friends all told me that I was back to my old self. After hearing this, I told my roommate that I would try to talk to her, explain my personality changes and ask if we could start dating again. Well, during finals week right before Christmas, my roommate informs me that She in engaged to Him. That was fast. And the wedding would be in August. Again, very fast. I’m devastated more than ever. That summer, I’m at Missouri for the summer session. It’s August. The Saturday after finals. And it’s the day of her wedding. Four of us are loading the car for a road trip to New Jersey. Rick is going to be a Best Man at a wedding. No one’s talking. Everyone knows I’m a wreck. I’m loosing her forever. Phone rings. It’s my Mom. She calling to say She called off the wedding the previous weekend. Mom didn’t know why. Later I discovered it was due to his infidelity. Standing on the porch, I thought I now had a chance to get back with her. As if nothing had happened. But then I realized that was totally unrealistic. Though I still loved her, I knew I had to let her move on. Move forward, not backwards. So I promised myself to avoid her and let her move on. After graduation, I joined a national accounting firm in St. Louis. She moved to teach in Alexandria, Virginia. That first Christmas, I’m at the family home in Missouri. Phone rings. It’s Her . She talks like nothing had happened. Remembering my promise, I go to end the call. As I was saying goodbye, She asked if I would attend Midnight Mass with Her. Shocked, I went silent. She asked again. She asked if I was still there. Finally, I said, “Sure”. Realizing my mistake, I went to great lengths not to even touch her that night. Returning to her home after the Mass, I did not follow her onto the porch. I stayed on the sidewalk about 10 feet away. She stood on the porch chatting for a few moments waiting for me to open the door. Soon she turned to see why I was not opening the door. When She saw me some 10 feet away, She had this terribly crushed look of defeat. She said goodnight walked inside. I felt like the biggest jerk in the world. I was starting to wonder if it was really the Steroids that made me a jerk. Maybe I’m just a natural jerk. Next day I called to apologize. Making it worse, she said, ‘I understand.” We talked for a couple hours. Not sure why, I asked if she had plans for New Year’s Eve. When she said no, I asked if she would like to go to one of those big parties held in the ballrooms of the downtown hotels: live jazz bands, dinner, champagne. She said yes. Two years later, we’re married. One fantastic son. He’s an aerospace engineer building military aircraft for Boeing and Grumman. After 42 years of marriage I lost her to Pancreatic Cancer. Shortly before she passed, we were reminiscing about those days at Missouri. I told I had a secret to tell her after 45 years. For the first time, I told her about the promise I made to myself on that porch. She said, “ So that’s why you kept crossing the street every time we approached. I thought it was because you hated me. Not that you still loved me.” We laughed. She kept laughing long I stopped. I asked what was so funny. She said she had a secret she’s been keeping from me for all these years. She said that on the morning of her wedding, that Saturday I was the porch making my promise to myself, she was hoping I would call her. Shocked, I asked why on earth would she want me to call her after the terrible way I treated her that Sophomore year. She said that she eventually learned from mutual friends about the Steroids and their impact on me. She felt sad because by then she was engaged to Him. Then she said something I will never forget. The week before wedding, She spoke to every guest to formally tell them that the wedding had been canceled, even though her parents informed all the guests a week before. She said that while making those calls she realized three important things. First, He never learned how a boy should treat his girl. But she said that she knew I did because of what I had learned from my Dad and Older Brother. Both were career military officers. “Treat women with love and respect.” Second, He would never stop cheating on Her. He was a player. But, She knew I would never cheat on Her. And finally third, She knew she chose the wrong boy. Choosing Him over me was a terrible mistake. She’s been so happy knowing that we both got a second chance. She chose Him….at first. Later, we chose each other. Every time I hear this song, “Him” (which is about five times a week, seriously), it reminds me how I almost lost Her forever. Thank God I didn’t. Thank you Mr. Holmes. Reid.

Greetings Professor. I'm a old on air radio DJ . I started back in 1976 in high school taking a radio / TV class and focused on radio on air studies and working in a few commercial radio stations in the last half of the 70s and got back into on air work in the 90s . As a former on air DJ ? I worked yes in the imfomus top 40 music formats of music radio. In the mid 90s here in Albuquerque? I worked weekends on a radio station called K-Hits on 100.3 FM and a soft rock FM station called 99.5 Magic FM . Anyway to make this to the point I played a good amount of times the two songs in this video you've mentioned . I personally leaned more towards the liking of Rupert's follow up song Him. But as you've stated both are great songs. In close I personally feel many songs from the 70s? To the day mid 90s had a form of story telling in them . I could list a few especially from the seventies or was that the decade of love.🤔 Hmmm. Anyway always enjoy catching your videos here. Thanks for some great music memories on your YT channel. And no I'm not a Kasey Kasem ? Lol

Glad your channel came up in my feed. I heard this song about 9 yrs ago for the first time, and thought it was fantastic, and oddly enough, a new song that had just come out. I was blown away on how catchy it was. At first it reminded me a little like ‘Shinedown’. To my surprise, this was released in 1979, and I thought, I had heard all the great songs from the 70’s -90’s. Even though the band is known for “This Beat Goes on/Switchin’ to Glide,” I will admit that I think “If the Stars come out tonight,” should also be synonymous with them.

This is a great song. Like you mention Professor there is the border line when the 70's disco evolved into the 80's. Rupert Holmes is an outstanding story teller. Great Video and interview. Greetings.

I have so much admiration for Rupert Holmes as a human being and I have a story about Rupert from the UK that happened very recently that I'd like to pass on to you. God bless Rupert Holmes.

Love this song. Yes. And i know youve talked about this in another segment. Anyway, i read recently that it really came out Oct 1979 & that it was the last hit of 1979 on the Billboard 100 BUT when 1980 hit it was still a hit in that year too. It was one of the only song or one of the only rock songs to be a hit in 2 decades. So awesome!

I knew this was the song you were going to discuss. It's my favorite song of Rupert Holmes. Escape(The Piña Colada Song) I love as well, but it's always the song played. I put this song on my High School "Break-up" mix tape.

I always considered myself an 80's guru when it came to music, but for whatever reason I have zero/zilch/nadda recollection of this. I don't know what happened... Another GREAT video!!

Rupert Holmes had a fun fight with Billy Joel for a while there. Arranging his own songs is amazing to me! I love the behind the scenes peek Adam. ~Mimi 💖

I’m so old we had a reel to reel. I remember my oldest sister listening to Led Zeppelin 2. I don’t think she still has it but I do wonder what it would worth today.

I was 10 or 11 years old the first time I heard this song. I was home alone on a snow day. I sat in the living room listening to the radio while watching it snow through the big bay windows. I thought to myself good grief am I going to have stuff like this happen when I grow up?
