Beautiful reaction ladies! The parting from Tarja for sure contributed to Tuomas' depression. But many have said, that for the most part it was the anger and backlash on him (although it was a band's decision) by fans and media that hit him hard and led to these dark emotions. Again lovely reaction, love you 🥰!

Another reactor has said that Tuomas' musical and emotional IQ isn't merely through the roof, it's up in the sky somewhere. Who else can compose like this? Who else can play like this? Who else can sing like this - and literally become what she sings? And above all, who else could touch your heart and soul like this? This is a masterpiece of power and emotion.

I recall Floor saying that she really likes to sing this song and has put a lot of effort to the arrangement. She offered to sing the intro boy soprano parts but Tuomas declined as it is a crucial part of the theme. That inner boy you know.

@@nemesisjuggernaut7920 Why would it be shallow? The song is Toumas adressing his feelings about the whole aftermath of firing Tarja. Falling into such a deep depression over it that he contemplated suicide but decided to commit it in a song lyric instead of doing it for real is hardly "shallow"!

I truly believe that this song helped me work through many emotions that were trapped inside after going through many years of sadness linked to chronic brain issues after menengitis. Absolute masterpiece with just so much attention to detail in both music and lyrics from Toumas. You really could write almost a book around the interpretation of that song, but here's just a few of the things that touch me the most when watching this performance: The first spoken word part states that "I have three minutes and counting" - and then exactly three minutes later, Toumas literally chops his head of. It's artistic suicide in a song instead of killing himself in real life. That's just so powerfull to me. Imagine to be in such a dark place and then still somehow produce art from it on this level is just extraordinary. I love how the performance show the bond between the members, especially Toumas, Emppu and Marko. You see quite early on, Emppu going to check in on Toumas and have a few words with him. And then at the end, Emppu and Marko gather round Toumas as the song ends to show this togetherness. But there's just loads and loads of detail. The darkest parts of the song are quite disturbing. Toumas stating himself as "the second robber to the right of Christ" - that beeing Judas (a story of betrayal) and in the chorus calling himself almost a two-faced whore for the cold world, and almost rejecting support by saying "no more words - tell me once my heart goes right". Those are lyrics written from a dark, depressed mind. But then there is the last part, "Mother & Father", which is actually the beginning. Toumas returning home to his parents who asks him "how did you become so cold?" (in firering Tarja), but also saying "you have such oceeans within" and "in the end I will always love you". Just wow. And all of that is not even touching on the musical side. The simple joy of seeing Marko play a quite complicated bass line whilst delivering his vocal part is worth the jouney alone. Thanks for your reaction - I can promise you that there's is so much to gain from rewatching this several times and discovering new things each time.

Flemming Linnebjerg Rasmussen above did a very good job, might I just add a few bits. I think it may help Sabina and Henri to know the song is written backwards, you need to listen very carefully, the boy narrator says "The end" at the start and "The beginning" at the end when Marko joins Emppu on Tuomas' podium. I see overall, the segment with Marko's vocal part to be an illustration of the vitriolic ire from all sides directed at Tuomas alone, the betrayer of the beloved Nightwish band, even though the firing letter was signed by the whole band. Raped again and again would be the unrelenting vitriol of fans and press. We know that Tuomas often uses the pseudonym of "boy", they want him in two pieces - infanticide. Only a guess, but knowing how deeply metaphoric Tuomas can be, the idea of the ultimate betrayer or Judas might be if you look at Da Vinci's The Last Supper, but looking out, not in as we usually do, then Judas is the second robber on the right. Floor knew what was coming but was not party to the debacle of the previous firing, the immediately previous song in the Wembley set, she sings "conquering the darkest places" directly to Tuomas on his podium at the end, I don't know if Sabina has done that one yet. A very good job done by these two charming ladies, much appreciated and it is indeed pleasant to listen to the work without interruption. You are both to be applauded.

Although it's alledged by many that Toumas had a crush or was in love with Tarja, as I understand it this is more about the backlash from the fans at the time over the firing of Tarja and how he felt that the band was finished. It is said that he fell into a deep depression that took almost a year and some wise words from his mother (home) for him to contact the other band members and decided to continue with a new singer. Toumas has said that he committed suicide in the song to save himself from doing so in real life. I could see that when Floor went into head voice in the Pacific it really got to Henri just as it gets us all, then by the end of Dark passion play she had caught the hook of the chorus and was singing along.

Hi Sabina and Henry! 🤘 Nice to see you two once more together making an reaction! I always like NW reactions with you or you 2 together! It's so sad to know the back story from this song, but without that this song, this masterpiece, will not exist. So it's a little bit bittersweet. I love Floor so much, she did live always such a great job and i always get goosebumps with this song! This song is not easy to sing! It's so nice when Emppu first and Marco later in the end go to Tuomas ask him how he feel or if he is ok, Tuomas said in an interview he killed himself in this song so he don't do it in real live but he also said sometimes he told the sound engeneer to take the vocals out of his inner ear headphones so it's a little bit easyer for him. I hope i see somedays an reaction from you (or you 2) from the song "Creek Marys Blood" from the End of an era conzert in 2005 with Tarja. It's one of the few songs Floor hasn't sung yet, like Beauty of the beast, but i like this song. It's so beautiful and with a special guest. Nice to see you again. This song is really a master piece by Tuomas. The song "The Poet and the Pendulum" is a 13 Minute journey through the mind and turmoil of Tuomas Holopainen after the year 2005. It was in that year the band parted with their long-time singer Tarja Turunen and had a personal falling out with her. The pain of the separation was big on both sides, and shown in this song. There is guilt for what happened, there is the responsibility that the band and Holopainen had to show towards the fans,. It was the End of an Era for them, and reason for Holopainen being lost as described in these lyrics. We can only of course to a certain degree suppose how much of these are truly Holopainen's feelings, wishes and pains - but we do know that the lyrics of Nightwish have been up to then very personal. Other songs on the album also digest this separation and falling out of the members with Turunen. However personal and "real" these thoughts are, I feel like this song definitely takes us not only on a journey with Holopainen but also into ourselves. The music underlines the emotional gravity of the song extremely well. And I believe a lot of people can actually relate to a sense of guilt and being overwhelmed that all they desired for is the safety of home and innocence. While being personal, the song can still ring true to it's listener. That's a quality Nighwish possesses in many, many more songs. The emotional journey is one we can all share and very few bands know how to put that journey into song and especially into sound as well as Nightwish does. The band remains through all it's shores and Oceans, one of my main favourites and I hold special place for the band in my musical heart. I hope you have enjoyed reading my analysis and share some of my thoughts. If you do have any comments, please feel free to let me know. And remember the beauty of interpretation is that it is subjective; we can see all and feel different things in the same song and continue to love it endlessly. I never had that big of a connection to this song as others have. Maybe it is because I misunderstood it. I think I always heard that last line "In the end I will always love you" as a message directly to Tarya and I didn't like it because that has an undertone of him still hoping against hope. Which in turn resonated with me as not being able to let go of the one that friendzoned you, even though you may feel they were the love of your life. Of which I can relate. So maybe I despised him a bit for the, but really projecting myself. Anyway, I only realized recently that those are words from his parents, not from him, so joke's on me.

When the demo of this song was made, it was the time between Tarja and Anette, Nightwish had no female vocalist. So Marko sang the whole song. There are four lines of additional lyrics in the demo version. They are only in the demo. Those lines were dropped from the studio/album version, and from live versions. "Would you like to rape my rotting carcass? Dissect my heart. And dislocate my wrist. It would make you come, wouldn't it? "Slaying the Dreamer" is another song where Tuomas left out some rough words, cleaned up the lyrics, before studio. I do not know if the "original" lyrics have been published, it may be that Tuomas has just told in general that that's what happened, with no details.

Your friend Henri(?) really echoed most of my thoughts about this performance. I'm a 76-year-old widower trying to understand why I like Nightwish. This is not the type of music I normally listen to or would even purchase, but I'm always amazed by their performances. I've only heard one or two performances by Tarja(?) so I won't compare, but Floor's voice really is excellent. She does express emotion very well, and with her voice, it is always an experience to hear her. A great reaction, and Sabina, Thank You, for the back story. Now, I'm back to a capella, and my virtual granddaughter Angelina Jordan. But, I'm a subscriber and I'll be back for your next reaction.

Tarja had also begun to travel separately from the rest of the band. But worse than that she had said "Nightwish needs me more than I need Nightwish." This left the guys with no other recourse but to fire Tarja as it was clear she regarded herself as the 'Talent' with the guys being her backing group.

She didn't meant that she was better than guys, but that she was going to go to solo career in anyway. Also, can anyone blame her, that she didn't want to travel on smokey busses with bunch of drunken rock stars. Come on. Tarja is a lovely girl who just matured faster than guys, and found a husband. They all have solo careers now, and they do much lighter tours as well.

Well put silv425. It felt to me that the band would of become Tarja and Nightwish if her husband had got his own way. The Tarja only fans don’t seem to understand there would be no Nightwish if the sacking hadn’t occurred. Tuomas took the blame, but the letter was signed by the whole band.

@@NightwishArena She became a greedy diva and got the boot for it. No excuses necessary. The best thing she ever did for NW. Floor was a major upgrade.

Great analysis, especially the discussion about the grief cycle. As a songwriter myself I imagine he wrote each section while actually experiencing that specific part of the cycle and the emotions that go with it.

The best of all the songs, though not the longest. That was The Greatest Show on Earth until the new album came out. If you take the parts of All the Works of Nature which Adorn the World as one big piece, that is the longest. It's a shame we'll never see this live again but that is a decision Tuomas had every right to make given the nature of the song. Very nice reaction as always. I noticed that Henri was completely lost in it with her eyes closed. Something you have to notice here is that at various times Emppu and Marko go over to Tuomas to check he is ok. He has said that at times he had to have the lyrics turned off in his in-ear because he couldn't bear to hear them. At the end Floor delays her usual "Thank you" to look across to Tuomas to check he's OK. At this point both Marko and Emppu have joined him. There is much mutual love and respect in this band. One of the things that makes them able to perform such music so well. For an interesting experience, seek out the demo version. Marko sang all the lyrics and there is much more anger in it.
