Those of you would regularly tune in to hear me ramble know I always try to respond swiftly to all your comments, but for now I will be a little quiet and slow. This morning Bruno took a turn for the worse and I am in no place to think straight. I’ll update when I can but to be honest it won’t be good news. But just know he’s comfortable, is on a blanket in front of the aga with his little sister snuggled up to him. This particular song hits so differently today given the circumstances. Thank you to everyone who has sent sweet wishes to my boy in the past. ❤❤❤ Edit - So many mean comments about going in with no context and research. I’ve got my reasons, take a breath and pause and all will become clear. I wanted to listen to this as a standalone piece of work. I didn’t want to know the context so I could hear it just as a piece of music without prejudices or preconceptions. I’ve always planned to rewatch another performance with context and see how it hits different when I get the origins and dynamics behind its creation. I wanted to have the opportunity to have that perspective for a comparison.

The Poet and the Pendulum was written after firing Tarja the original singer. She was the face of Nightwish at the time, and Tuomas (Keyboards) wrote this and considered her a muse to many of the songs he had written at that point. They had also grown up in the same city and knew each other since early childhood. Some say Tuomas was in love with her but only Tuomas knows that for sure . All the band members decided together to fire her for acting too much of a diva And her husband & Manager was stepping way outta bounds concerning the band business He always wanted more money , only big paying shows . Tuomas was painted as the devil by many fans, Press and even politicians. He went through a deep depression. He even considered ending the band . He wrote The Poet and the Pendulum at that time, and actually kills himself in the song. He said he killed himself in the song at the 10:00 time stamp , as to kill the pain he was going through . To this day every time he plays it, it takes him back to those feelings, and shows on his face. In the last part, Mother and Father, words are said to him that his real mother & Father said to him at that time of his deep depression. One part that touches me at the end when the guitarist Emppu and bassist Marko, the only other two involved with firing Tarja (that were still active with the band at the time of this show )were standing with Tuomas at the end in solidarity and love., NOTE : the 1st two words are (The End) and the last two words are (The Beginning) representing the end of the 1st era of Nightwish and the beginning of the next era

" Some say Tuomas was in love with her but only Tuomas knows that for sure" I think this rumor arose only because Tuomas made a slight understatement in his "open letter" when firing Tarja: He mentioned Marcelo, Tarja's husband, in a negative context but forgot to explain to a wider audience who he was to the band. Many mistakenly decided that it was about jealousy and unrequited love. Before the release of the band's biography book, only a few fans knew that Tarja had made Marcelo her manager and authorized representative and that the conflict had reached the breaking point largely due to the fact that Marcelo abused his powers, directly interfering in the Nightwish' business and even blackmailing the band that Tarja would not perform at certain shows if the band didn't agree to his demands.

This is that song where listener must understand the backstory, the muse in this case is truly emotional, personal; beyond root canal w/o novocaine, one’s heart cut with 1000 razor blades! Thank God 🙏(or whom ever you believe in) that Tuomas and Nightwish found this New Beginning; what a glorious ride they have taken us all into! Arguably The G.O.A.T. 💙🇫🇮

One of the most genius aspects of this composition is when the young boy whispers in the middle section, he claims he has "three minutes and counting." If you notate the time he says "three minutes" and when Tuomas brings the blade down on himself, it is three minutes to the second. This song is about his feelings about having to fire his dear friend Tarja from the band, and the clapback he got from the fans. In Finland, she is a far bigger star than elsewhere, and they blamed him and tore him to shreds in the media. He says he deleted himself in this piece so that he wouldn't in reality. There is plenty of information on the web about it, and it's well worth the investigation. Loved your reaction.

Enjoyed your reaction! This is Tuomas's most personal and emotional song. It is also very personal and emotional for most fans. In 2005 the band had reached a breaking point with their first lead singer, Tarja. Things between her, her husband/manager and the band had been deteriorating for some time and had reached the point where they could no longer work together. The band decided to fire her, which they did via an open letter, right after the End of an Era concert. Tarja responded with her own open letter explaining her side of things. The backlash against the band, but mostly against Tuomas, was massive and very nasty. Tuomas felt betrayed by Nightwish's fans and sank into a deep depression. He wrote this song as way of expressing and exploring all of the emotions of his depression and grief. Tuomas often uses the poet in his lyrics to reference himself and yes, he does have a great affinity for the ocean. He sees it as a place of refugee. I highly recommend you read the analysis of this song by the artist Annike Hausen. IMO it is a brilliant, master's level analysis and I think you would really enjoy it. I would provide a link but every time I do the YT algorithms delete my comment. Just google her name and Poet and the Pendulum. A few thoughts on the lyrics. The first spoken word section is Tuomas allegorical rape by the fans who had turned on him. Like the line "A whore for the cold world" in the previous verse, Tuomas feels used and betrayed by the fans who only care about what he does for them and not about his feelings or pain. The second spoken word section is a Eulogoy for Tuomas. The line " A thousand pages of erased text" represents all the songs that Tuomas would have wrote for Tarja but now would never be heard. The pendulum blade falls (Tuomas making the slashing motion across his neck). The heart beat slows and finally stops mid beat. The original version of Nightwish is dead. The last part of the song, Mother and Father, gets me every time. The lyrics are actual words spoken by his parents during the depths of his depression. Floor channeling the anguish of a mother who has lost her child. Then the words, In the Beginning, signaling the birth of a new version of Nightwish. For me this is Nightwish's greatest song. Their Magnum Opus. Tuomas pouring out his heart and anguish in the music and lyrics. Floor perfectly delivering that anger and pain. It fills me with emotion and lets me connect to Tuomas in a profound way. This song is no longer performed live. Tuomas has said they (him, Empuu, and at the time Marko) are not those people anymore and they have moved on. Performing it just takes Tuomas back to that difficult place emotionally. Emppu comes over and checks on Tuomas in the beginning of the song to make sure he is ok emotionally. He and Marko then join him at the end of the song in a sign of support. Tuomas often would have the sound engineers turn off the vocal feed in his in ears because it would make him too emotional. I am so grateful that he chose to write this song and share this part of himself with us. Everything about this song and performance is about making us feel his emotions. Yes, Please do a dive into the backstory. Read the open letters. Read Annika's analysis and listen once again and then please come back and share how knowing the backstory changed or didn't change how you experienced the song. One of the things I love about Nightwish is their ability to evoke emotions in me and their fans and I am very interested to hear what emotions you felt after taking a deeper dive into the song.

This is a song about Tuomas dealing with his depression around the departure of Tarja from the band, and the reaction of some of the band's fans - the issue even got raised in the Finland parliament, so you can understand how big the news was in Finalnd and the media storm around it. Tuomas wrote this so he could kill himself in the song, and not have to do so in real life.

You really need to read the background of the Tuomas and Tarja saga which the song was written about the dark times that tuomas went through . It was that difficult for tuomas during playing on stage the song that he asked the sound engineers to take out the vocal through his in ears as the pain of playing the song was so painful. That's why empuu and marco come up to toumas thorough the song to check he is OK. I was actually at the Wembley gig and knowing the back ground made the song live so much more powerful.

To get the full experience of this song you really need to read up on the back story! Basically in this song Tuomas Holopainen (the keyboardist and bandleader who also writes practically all their music and lyrics) deals with his angst, anxiety, pain and depression after the dismissal of Tarja Turunen, the first singer of Nightwish in 2005, who was en still is a national icon in their home country, Finland. After that break up, which was painfull enough, a national outrage erupted in Finland, many people blaming Tuomas for what went wrong. Things got so heated that (as I understood) even the prime minister of the country had to intervene. In this performance Tuomas commits suicide in the song, so that he would not have to do it in real life.. That is also why you see Emppu the band members go over to him: to check if he is actually alright.

Dom, this is one of the first songs to ever get me to cathartically process large portions of my own depression. When I first heard this song, I was beside myself when I realized what this song was about, and I am not ashamed to say I cried. Because I knew the feelings of Tuomas as he wrote this masterpiece very well. And as him writing this song allowed him to process his anguish, me listening to this song did the same for me. Because no matter how much KZbin tries to make it seem as though talking about depression and self-deletion is somehow _verboten,_ it is a fact that depression kills. And when a masterpiece of art like this is recorded and performed, it is essential that we have the ability to speak about it, whether analysing the lyrics, or what our own experiences are dealing with the subject-matter. When taken with both Meadows of Heaven, as well as Bloodywood's song "Jee Veerey," it becomes a way to release the things from your heart, mind, and soul that you have held on to, in a very healthy way. Which is why I will forever be grateful to Tuomas, as he has written, musically, the closest thing I have ever heard to how depression actually feels. And for me, the lyric "Forgive me/I have but two faces/one for the world/one for God, save me" is about as descriptive as one can get, with how helpless and hopeless depression can make someone feel. And for me, when I first heard Part IV: Mother and Father, despite it being based off a conversation with Tuomas' parents, Floor made it feel like she was singing those words to me which is why she managed to bring down the walls I had built up in my depression. And her doing that was the catharsis of finally letting go of the pain I had held on to. That is how much this song can affect people. And it isn't just that Nightwish can make you feel things, but that Nightwish can, and has, saved lives.

About Tuomas' feelings of depression caused by the huge fan backlash after firing Tarja. All the guys are responsible, but Tuomas took most of the heat , even the Finnish Prime Minister had a comment. It takes inspiration from Edgar Allen Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum". Originally recorded with Anette, Floor wanted to take over all the operatic parts, but Tuomas wanted to keep the boy soprano at the start. First lyric "The End", last Lyric "The Beginning" . You could see this as the end of one era and the start of something new. Divided into 5 parts, the last part are some of the words Tuomas Mother said when he went home. One of 3 songs pertaining to the split, along with "Bye Bye Beautiful" (only ever performed with Anette) and "Master Passion Greed"(never performed live). '1000 pages of erased text' , I see as all the songs he would have written ,had the split with Tarja not happened. The song is very personal to Tuomas, he would sometimes have the sound guys remove the vocals from his in ears. You see Emppu go to him early , to check on him. At the end Emppu and Marko go to him in a show of support. Floor pauses and looks over to him before saying 'Thank You". This song is no longer played live, all involved have moved on. The 2nd longest Nightwish song to date at 14 minutes, only "The Greatest Show On Earth" is longer at 21 minutes Next at Wembley, you have to backtrack, "Alpenglow" was played just before this.

Hello lovely soul, First of all, sad to hear Bruno isn't doing well. My thoughts are with you. Second, just ignore all the mean comments. It is your channel, you do as you like. What those people didn't notice is that you picked up on missing some context. Almost all reactors who didn't know the context or background, didn't even know they missed something. So in my opinion it is really good you picked that up. Third, no need to be sorry for pausing, again, it is your channel, you pause as much and where you want. If someone doesn't like it, they can always watch the original. So..... needed to get that out. Thank you for your reaction, really loved is. For me, you are spot on with Floor. She is the only singer who can bring tears to my eyes, Simone Simons gets really close. Floor doesn't just sing a song, she tells a story with emotions in it, you can feel it. Well, at least I can. Hello The song "The Poet and the Pendulum" is a 13 Minute journey through the mind and turmoil of Tuomas Holopainen after the year 2005. It was in that year the band parted with their long-time singer Tarja Turunen and had a personal falling out with her. The pain of the separation was big on both sides, and shown in this song. There is the responsibility that the band and Holopainen had to show towards the fans,. It was the End of an Era for them, and reason for Holopainen being lost as described in these lyrics. We can only of course to a certain degree suppose how much of these are truly Holopainen's feelings, wishes and pains - but we do know that the lyrics of Nightwish have been up to then very personal. Other songs on the album also digest this separation and falling out of the members with Turunen. This is one of the interpretations and i know lots of fans do not agree, they just need to read the open letter that was given to Tarja by the whole band at her last concert with Nightwish, where they fired her. And the main reason that Tuomas went through a depression was that specially the Tarja fans where furious and showed that in the media and everyone was blaming Tuomas. (the fans spit on his grave). He felt the whole world was against him. However personal and "real" these thoughts are, I feel like this song definitely takes us not only on a journey with Holopainen but also into ourselves. The music underlines the emotional gravity of the song extremely well. And I believe a lot of people can actually relate to a sense of guilt and being overwhelmed that all they desired for is the safety of home and innocence. While being personal, the song can still ring true to it's listener. That's a quality Nighwish possesses in many, many more songs. The emotional journey is one we can all share and very few bands know how to put that journey into song and especially into sound as well as Nightwish does. The band remains through all it's shores and Oceans, one of my main favourites and I hold special place for the band in my musical heart. I hope you have enjoyed reading my analysis and share some of my thoughts. If you do have any comments, please feel free to let me know. And remember the beauty of interpretation is that it is subjective; we can see all and feel different things in the same song and continue to love it endlessly. Lyric analysis by Annika Hausen Greetings from the Netherlands

Hi Dom, greetings from down south I will leave it up to others to give you the details, suffice to say Tuomas said in an interview that he never felt suicidal but he did feel extremely depressed when he wrote this. I have heard that Marko instigated the letter to Tarja but as the leader of the band the vast majority of hate was directed at Tuomas even though all four band members signed the letter Things you may have missed; The first words of the song were "The End" and the last words were "The Beginning". This song was used to kill off the old Nightwish and start a new beginning for the band When Emppu stood next to Tuomas talking to him he was checking that he was OK. In the past Tuomas couldn't bear to hear the lyrics of this song in his in-ear monitors when they played it because he found it too upsetting. You also see Emppu thanking a member of the audience (who I assume was checking that they were OK) The camera was often on Tuomas in this song, and it brings tears to a lot of fan's eyes when you see him singing "Try to save them all". This is his interpretation of the advice his parents gave him at the time At the end Emppu and Marko stood in support next to Tuomas as they are the last three surviving members of the band from that time When the song finished, Floor turned to look at Tuomas to make sure he was OK before thanking the crowd This is all water under the bridge now and Tarja and the band members have reconciled. Tarja and Floor are good friends so when Floor was asked to join Nightwish she spoke to Tarja before accepting to make sure that Tarja had no ojections

Tuomas went into a deep, almost suicidal depression when Tarja was fired from the group. He saidvif he wrote a song about killing himself hecwouldn't have to do it for real. When they first started including it in concerts the vocals were muted jn his headset.

The only remaining members of the band when Tarja was fired: Marco and Empuu go up to check on Tuomas during this song. After this tour, this song was never on the set list again.

There's also song called master passion greed what is linked to background of this song also never played live, a song what brings raw emotions of the band regarding to Tarja and her manager husband which spread quite a toxic environment inside the band back in the days..

Hi Dom. Sorry to hear about Bruno. Don't worry about the videos if you need to take care you your personal needs first. We WILL understand. This song is the result of events that occurred in 2005. The original singer, Tarja Turunen, was unanimously fired from the band due to many differences that included disagreements in what venues they were playing, making it to rehearsals late if not at all, putting the band in the back burner and planning to leave to do her own thing as suggested by her husband, Marcel. This exploded into a situation that had the media and fans turn against Toumas and blamed him for her dismissal. Nightwish lost much of their fan base, the media just kept pointing fingers, and as much as Tuomas kept trying to explain why he made the decision, nobody wanted to accept it. Tuomas fell in a deep depression and began entertaining thoughts of suicide so he went and had a talk with his mother. Some of what was said is actually in Part V of the song (Mother & Father). So this conversation gave him the confidence and courage to keep his head up and keep going . The result was this song where he decided to kill himself in it so it didn't have to happen in real life, and an album called "Dark Passion Play" which featured their NEW singer Anette Olzon. In most of the album, Tuomas lashes out and expresses his feelings from the betrayal done by many of the people around him that he considered friends before Tarja was fired. There are a few songs from this album performed in Wacken, so if you wish, you can watch the videos again and listen to the lyrics taking in where they originated from. Puts a whole new perspective on the meaning of the song. Well, now you know the story. Here is a link of the video with lyrics if you wish to really put the whole thing together and enjoy it as it should be. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3bdi4WDqc2bjrcsi=uDRcvPwap620XAbH Just a few notes about what you already saw... Emppu goes up to Tuomas to make sure he is ok and Marko does the same almost at the end. Speaking of "the end", the song starts with those words and the last words are "the beginning". The song is written in 5 parts... 1) White Lands of Empathica. 2) Home 3) The Pacific 4) Dark Passion Play 5) Mother & Father The Transition between 4 and 5 has Emppu, Marko, and Floor sitting with Kai showing their respects for the poet whose heart just stopped beating. So any more questions, please ask. Thank you for the video, reaction and comments. Stay safe and stay blessed. 😊❤️🤘🤘

To find out the full story, you need to read the public letter firing Tarja - originally it was private, but something happened (maybe a fight) and the letter got published. It was highly critical about Tarja and basically humiliated her. This led to some public fighting. Tarja did a tearful interview saying she didn't see it coming (partly true, but Tarja planned to leave at the end of her contract anyway). NW wrote a song VERY critical of Tarja's husband ("Master, Passion, Greed" sung solo by Marco - this was never sung live) released on the Dark Passion Play album, along with a song directly aimed at Tarja ("Bye, Bye, Beautiful" sung by Anette and Marco). Tarja, becoming annoyed, sang a song called "Enough". This drove a severe wedge between Tarja and the band. Marco has just recently made peace for himself and sings "Phantom of the Opera" with her again. Marco is featured with Exit Eden on the song "Run!" This was a bitter split and many of the band members have left the stage - Jukka stopped drumming, but is still with the band as an administrator, Marco left recently, and Anette has been gone since 2012. Only Tuomas and Empuu of the original post-Tarja band remain. Of those two, Tuomas knew Tarja the longest - going back to school. They weren't in love as some often suggest. Both loved music, but Tuomas was more a folk music person (in fact NW was originally a folk band), and Tarja was a classical singer. Once she returned from training she answered the advertisement placed by NW for a singer. Because Tuomas knew her, he listened. He could see potential in symphonic music because of her voice, but blended it with metal. NW's new sound was born. Jukka developed a sleep disorder (probably because of his head movement during drumming). Marco had depression and a dispute with the label. Anette was fired for a variety of reasons, but the band refused to disclose them learning a lesson from the firing of Tarja. Floor was asked to finish the tour from 2012 to 2013. Shortly after, she was formally asked to join the band, as was Troy.

Maybe somebody mentioned this already, but I couldn't find it so I'll add that one more piece of context: Regarding that four-letter "R" word that we cannot write or say here without getting in trouble with the gods of censorship... The overall metaphor is, of course, Edgar Allan Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum." And the song is about Tuomas himself, as he names himself explicitly in the eulogy erasing all doubt. The "R" word is used figuratively and refers to the repeated swipes of Poe's pendulum blade, slowly slicing through his abdomen one painful millimeter at a time. So it is the blade r**ing him "again and again and again" with each swing. /// So sad to hear about Bruno. I love cats with a deep inner connection, and it breaks my heart to see a sweet feline sick and/or dying. 😢

Someone should make an animated story video to this version of this Opus. It was part of a trilogy of songs about the "Tarja thing". The other 2 were "Bye Bye Beautiful" and "Master Passion Greed". Make a great soundtrack. The blend of Floor and Marko's voices is so good. Marko sang almost the entire demo of this, darker, angrier, cruder!

The concept of the song is the feelings that Tuomas felt after the aggressive reaction of the music press and many fans to the band's inevitable decision to fire Tarja. In those years, Tarja was considered the "queen of the metal scene" and many believed that Nightwish died without her. All this led Thomas to severe depression, which he wrote this song about. Many fans mistakenly believe that this song is about Tuomas' feelings for Tarja and even about his "guilt" for firing her, but it couldn't be further from the truth.

My sympathies for Bruno taking a turn for the worse, and my apologies for anyone that was mean or rude about the video reaction. We are a passionate group about Nightwish and Floor, sometimes too passionate. Tuomas said he killed himself in this song as not to do so in real life. After they fired Tarja, Tuomas became very depressed and wrote this song. He said he found it therapeutic, but playing it always takes his head back to that place. They don't play it anymore.

This is one song that fans will generally suggest you do research because it can, as seen in this instance, led to some confusion. You need the back story. Glad you had the chance to hear this magnificent piece. It is one of the few that I think is improved by having subtitles as the lyrics are tricky and and tells you which of the five sections you are in. My love goes out to you and Bruno. Please don't listen to the studio version of this as it is sung by Anette and it is quite poor as it lacks Floor's empathy and vocal versatility and Tuomas has said that he would not want anyone else to sing this after Floor's performance.

Sorry about Bruno, it's just tough and something us humans are not very good at handling - or maybe we are because we allow ourselves to feel.... The Poet and the Pendulum are a tour through a deep personal depression (Tuomas after the reactions after Tarja had to go - handled very poorly and public!) But this is exactly why Symphonic Metal, Nightwish and Floor are where they are - no one else can do this story and composition justice.
