the "choir" is made up of previous members (and the current singer). this was the 25th anniversary show. Anneke left the band in 2007, and this was a special treat for everyone, as this was a compilation of members performance and she hadnt performed with The Gathering for like 10 years. Anneke will forever be my favorite vocalist for The Gathering.

@@sabina1118 She is the godmother of female metal singers...in her youth, Floor was wondering what genre fit her voice (jazz? blues? She didn't really feel them) when she heard a young Anneke, with The Gathering, sing "Strange Machines" and Floor though, 'Hmmm....maybe I can sing metal too!" ...and the rest is history! We all owe Anneke a great debt for influencing Floor (and many other female metal singers) in this way! If you want to be entertained, look over YT for some of Anneke's solo performances where it's just her and her guitar or ukulele ...she is a riot talking to the crowd, and immensly talented. I suggest her cover of "Time after Time" (Cindy Lauper).

Her voice also fits perfectly with the music of the gathering. Unfortunately she makes very different music now, too soft and not punchy (except The storm). I only got to know the gathering about 8 years ago. I wish this had happened years earlier then I could have attended many concerts. I am therefore very happy with the youtube performance in conserthal "Sleeping Beauty" WOW.... would have paid a few hundred euros to be there. I have the impression that the world only really hears the gathering now despite all the appearances in the world. I see more and more recent comments.

Floor Jansen idolized Anneke as a young girl. She proved to Floor that a powerful female voice could sing for a metal band. I knew you would see some of Floor in Anneke's style. There are dozens of Anneke performances on KZbin - including some beautifully intimate solo appearances. Just Anneke, her guitar and an entranced audience who she has wonderful reaction with. Everyone mentions how she inspired Floor but I am sure she influenced the vast majority of female Dutch singers.

Thank you for a reaction to Anneke van Giersbergen! Such a lovely voice and person, as you know now, a sort of godmother to a big metal scene in the neterhlands and europe. Tuomas has mentioned the Gathering, even in a song (how's the hart). And this sort of melodic clean(ish) voice over trippy metal is just great imo, and not common, especially back then. Hope you do more Anneke, there is a lot of variety. I recommend any small cover of a metal song with her and a guitar, for a intimate show. Even if it's shot with a phone... Or a really fun one is "Strange Machines live Pinkpop Fest(1996)" for a young Anneke entertaining a big crowd. Floor mentioned this song in particular in the 'beste zangers' show. And also in another interview Floor said: “It was interesting to hear such a strong female voice [Anneke van Giersbergen] in metal, and also the song itself affected me. Strange Machines is by far the strongest track on that album [Mandylion]. It was big in my homeland, the Netherlands, and it wasn’t famous for nothing. It was an epic track and Anneke was at her best on there. She inspired a lot of people, including me, and although she’s done all sorts of things, I think she deserved to have a lot more success.”

Oh I had to click as soon as I saw this. Anneke is my favorite female vocalist. She has about the best vocal control I have ever heard. Even at 48 she is still going strong and still sounds great. I havent read all the comments but I am sure someone has mentioned by now that she was the one who influenced Floor Jansen to sing metal. Thank you for the great video.

I don't know how to say it other than to just say that I absolutely am in utter love with the fantastic Anneke. You must see Anneke with two of my other vocal loves, Floor (of course) and the magical Marcela Bovio performing the short but sweet Ayreon number, "Valley of the Queens". Anneke and The Gathering are responsible for turning Floor into a metal-head with their classic, "Strange Machines".

I agree with your comments. This was an outstanding performance. Even on video ten years later I could feel the energy and the passion. I could see Anneke getting more involved with the song, more in the moment. Her name is Anneke van Giersbergen. She was in the Gathering from 1994 until 2007. She performed at TG25, the Gathering's 25th anniversary concerts, in 2014. I believe all present and former band members were there. She has now got a solo career.

Her duet with Sharon Den Adel of Within Temptation, Somewhere is an amazing song if you haven't heard that yet off of the Black Symphony CD/DVD...she's very talented and The Gathering was one of the first bands I believe to be classified as "symphonic metal" her and the bands sound influenced all that followed to some degree. Other songs from them that I have heard that I particularly like (from The Gathering) are Alone (Waking Hour), Forgotten, Shortest Day, and Your Troubles are Over.

The one from A Noise Severe is far better. It shows more of the band and no baggage from the members who weren't part of the original. It really shows off the guitarist. Next best is just Anneke singing Travel with a full orchestra - just gorgeous. In third place is the video of the afternoon performance of this same 25th anniversary concert taken by Anthony Serafino III with stunning closeups of Anneke's eyes tearing up near the end. His sound recording is a bit weak though.

You should also hear the album version of this song because several subtle things get lost in the live version. thank you for your reaction to "The Gathering". This make me think back 20+ Years ago where I could listen to her voice their music and their albums the whole day. "How to measure a planet" is quite long. On two CDs there the title track has about 30mins or so on it#s own. It's a masterpiece in my opinion.

This video was a collaboration between the band and fans all over. The soundtrack was provided and the videos was compiled from various camera. (if im not mistaken) Not all live come as close as studio, but the TG25 goes way beyond.

I was watching something else and than I saw in my recommendations you reacted to this masterpiece. Everything on hold, I must see this!! I saw Anneke for the first time on dutch TV at Pink Pop in 1996 singing strange machines, the same performance that influenced Floor and it can be found on youtube. Watch the 2005 live concert for an amazing experience of this song. Do you know the Shuttle disaster? They use footage from that to great affect....HOWEVER, rather than be redundant, look for her solo career after she left The gathering and became part of The gentle Storm. The song Storm is extraordinary. Check out the lyrics. The live version is "words escapee." (But personally her work with The Gathering is the best.As it is serious literature. It is good to compare.)
