30 seconds of 30 Seconds to Mars, is enough for Chad to structure the song and improv the rest.

you have articulated PERFECTLY the reasons I tell people HOW he can do this and WHY it isnt as easy as it looks.

6:19 the break was given away because the start of the original song starts with the same rising guitar sound scape thingy, though out the track his loose funk style hi hat signature is herd, the toms moment you can tell because the track mix lowers the vocal so there too much space not enough guitar or bass ether- meaning toms because cymbals, hi hats and snares would take over the lower sounding vocal, his nervous ghost kicks are herd though out the play- he even tries to beef up the bass with the ghost kicks too LoL just like in his own bands, his speed up hi hat moments are half as long as the ones in the original my friend told me about this original video last night after I was talking to him about a documentary I seen about Chad mans been playing drums since he was 8 or 9 years old, he knows music structure like most musicians, just all that experience if he faked it then I cant tell, everything tells me this is real
@jamesw6899 Жыл бұрын
I think the most impressive part is that he DOESN’T guess right on every change, but he hears and adjusts so quickly and seamlessly that it’s very hard to tell.

it's like just danced with music Genius
@HansaKondore10 ай бұрын
@@igor7659 talking about dancing is actually really similar. When you look at big dance battles like just debout, you will notice that sometimes they don't know the beat but the overall structure of the song tells them the incoming breaks, snares and bass so they will hit the beat exactly. Majid, paradox and D Soraki have insane musical understanding for example.

You could see he was still expecting it to build but then caught it and switched immediately to the Tom hits. I’m sure he basically knows how it’s gonna go, but for each transition he takes a second or two and then goes in 1000% “for the kill”. Bad pun, I know. He’s way more versatile then I thought , like he did the drums for Dua Lipa? That video is great to show that but also because it’s Chad Smith and he plays it hilariously even using the gong behind him. You should definitely check or react to that.

chad smith is so underrated. one of the most solid pocket drummers I've ever heard.
@LuisRdzG102 ай бұрын
Chad Smith is a jam session drummer, in fact RHCP makes their music that way, that was a natural jump into a drumless track for him, nailed it of course.
@Totally-Not-A-Robot6 ай бұрын
Chad has a keen understanding of song structure, great improvisational skill, and decades of experience playing at the highest level. All of it shows here, from picking up on the changes and adjusting on the fly, to breaking a stick and recovering in a beat or two, to understanding the feel of the music well enough to come pretty damn close to the original track after hearing the first 20 seconds for the first time.
@HofTheStage6 ай бұрын
Absolutely
@huitrecouture5 ай бұрын
He lays down drums all the time on just an exsting musical track like he did for Dua Lipa. Been playing to Anthony's rhythmic vocals for 36 years. Rhcp creates their music by improvising on the fly then turning it all into a structured song. They improvise every intro jam at every one of their shows too. If you know music you see him letting the song breathe and his power to acutely listen to each measure so he can ebb and flow when necessary. 6:31 He anticipates a drum fil, throws one off and 4 seconds later has already revised it and does a 2nd broader drum fill, and then again a few seconds later. Like at one crescendo he was slamming it then the vocals dropped off and got soft and he quickly adjusted. Seamless.
@TheSchaef473 ай бұрын
6:00 he nailed this so hard, to come into this outro playing the two over the three is a crazy flex.

We have to remember that this man plays with Frusciante, Kiedis, and Flea. Being able to riff so effortlessly comes as second nature to him.
@talonpilot5 ай бұрын
If you watch some old RHCP interviews and docu-series videos, you hear him talk about how he and Flea would just jam for hours, changing up parts and ‘playing’ off of each other to see what sounded best. Flea’s new rhythm would inspire him to try a different beat, which would repeat itself over and over…. Basically just jamming for the fun of it allowed him to hear the changes and adapt instantly. Just a great ear for music and the HUGE ability to play whatever he wants to when he wants to.this by far set the standard in the format Drumeo’s videos. No one else has ever done it first run thru until him… others have tried but this by far sets the standard! Awesome to watch… for like the 100th time!
@chucku00 Жыл бұрын
Love the way you're promoting Drumeo channel extensively with a nice and proper edit on what they're about. That's some level of respect and politeness that should be more common on the YT sphere. And also that you also know the rules of Drumeo's "game" just before Chad will exceed them by starting straight ahead. Now they'll have to up the ante by proposing foreign (non English singing) and/or microtonal songs to their following guests. They also could invite Shannon Leto for him to cover "Johnny kick a hole in the sky" or "Sir Psycho Sexy"... "Play that funky music, Emo boy!"

In addition to his excellent technical level and extensive experience, Chad also has a very good feature - he listens to vocals, and this very well helps to find his way in an unfamiliar song on the go. It doesn't really matter whether he's listened to it before or not, but any drummer with the above qualities (good technique, a lot of experience and the ability to read a song from the vocals) will be help to blind play almost any song.

2:25 I know just enough music theory to know that I don't really know what I'm talking about, but I recognized that laugh of disbelief because I felt the same way... "He did NOT just instantly catch that change in the music!!..." Edit: Also, after watching the video at least 5 times, I can just NOW start to hear the points where Chad briefly hesitates before launching into it ❤

HIs rendition, is a bit more busy, as he put it himself, but personally I feel it fits as well or even better than Shannon's version. That's not to say Shannon is not a good drummer, he obviously is, but Chad has had so much experience over time he does 'active listening' and he knows where the transitions are by instinct.
