Fun facts: Dolores, the one with super hearing, refers to him in present tense, and late in the song goes from “it’s like I hear him now” to just “I can hear him now” because she in fact knows exactly where he is. As to Isabella. With the happy story, the last part of her song during the over lap is “and I’m fine and I’m fine I’m fine”. She seems to have the one good prediction, But as the movie goes into later, she actually feels trapped by it, and does not want the life she currently has but doesn’t know how to tell everybody else who thinks everything is perfect.

Bruno is like an oracle or prophet in classic literature (Oracle of Delphi, Wyrd Sisters in "MacBeth", etc). The future is immutable, Bruno can only receive vague visions of the future, but it's still up to interpretation, which he can interpret incorrectly or incompletely. With Tia Pepa, he actually didn't view her future. He was empathetic and could see she was nervous on her wedding day and was trying to comfort her. Pepa's nerves made it rain, and the more she made it rain, the more nervous she got, creating a feedback loop.
@Admiralfeb3 жыл бұрын

The song is genius in almost every aspect. We get a different story of who Bruno is from each character, layering in a narrative of confusion and superstition that WE can see but the characters cannot. We get a major chord structure with subtle dips into minor to get our attention for certain portions ushering us from section to section. We get a build-drop-build-drop pattern as voices layer in only to drop out in Delores’s portion and then again in Isabella’s making the tension grow more and more taunt throughout. Delores’s portion is accompanied by Flamenco steps in the audio, keeping the sense of pattern and rhythm without a chorus, letting her whisper her part while still getting a driving beat. We have been shown that Isabella is a bit of a spoiled princess and her verse being so different from the doom and gloom of all the others reinforces that narrative, Delores’s verse following, brings us back to the pessimistic view of Bruno so we can continue with the feeling of impending doom. The cues as to the arrival of the Guzmans for dinner make for a ticking clock, (“Mariano’s on his way”, “Your boyfriend is here.”, “Time for dinner!”) pushing us into the big drop where all the verses weave in and out filling the entire space, isolating Mirabel in a confusing swirl of narratives and characters, leaving her and us none the wiser despite everyone having a say. At the end of the piece we have a foundation of tension and confusion upon which to build the next scenes. Masterful construction, storytelling, direction of the audience, and pacing.
@MetasActReon3 жыл бұрын
On top of this, Isabella's part is foreshadowing. It sounds perfect and good, makes you think "at least he prophesied something good" and "of course the golden child got a golden prophesy to fit" but in her song we find that that prophesy was also a prophesy that the receiver didn't like, making it fit in with all of these prophesies we recognize as bad omens.

Even better is with Delores's part you actually have Bruno creeping behind in the upper levels and dancing to the song with his bucket. Showing up at the sound of falling sand as she mentions how she relates him to that. Works since she is the one who always knew he was around. The ending where they all in unison go "He's Here" works both with the arrival of the Guzmans and as a subtle clue to the fact that Bruno is still here.

Delores sums the whole Bruno situation up with "Always left Abuela and the family fumbling, grappling with prophecies they couldn't understand." Bruno gets way too much flack. These are self-fulfilling prophecies. Tia Pepa - who starts the song - controls the weather with her emotions, so when Bruno tells her it looks like rain SHE panics and creates a hurricane. And that lady's goldfish was going to die no matter what Bruno said because it wasn't being properly kept.

I generally agree with "Don't shoot the messenger.", so generally agree that Bruno gets too munch undeserved flack, but funnily enough, the Tia thing is actually one of the few instances in which I think he *does* deserve blame. What we have here is a cognitohazard: it is reasonable for Bruno to expect that making Tia worried will cause Tia to hurt herself. It's his sister, he knows at least *that much* about her.

Dolores says that she associates Bruno with the sound of falling sand, right!? Well the sand is a perfect personification of Bruno's gift. Like his clairvoyance or predictions, it's never fully accurate, they're constantly shifting and changing like sand beneath our feet. Bruno also says to Mirabel that he doesn't know "WHEN" his prediction of her will come to fruition, only that it will happen, so the falling sand when entering his room is a reflection of an hourglass, because it's only a matter of time (or rather when) Bruno's prophecies may come true.
@whisperingsage893 жыл бұрын
An interesting thing about prophecy is that they're both prediction and warning, but they can only end up being one or the other. @@whisperingsage89 I don't think we know if they can also work as a warning or if he just doesn't always get the full context and/or doesn't necessarily see the end results of everything. After all, the man of Dolores' dream WAS about to propose to her cousin and if he didn't/wasn't bale to watch any further than that that would have been the logical conclusion. In that case it'd be less a case of his prophecies not always coming true/occasionally being warnings rather than prophecies and more a case of them being liable to misinterpretation.

I need to watch the Miranda Disney musicals, because I only seen Encanto so far because of a Howard Ho video and Miranda really seems to be following in the footsteps of Howard Ashman. A lot of people credit Alan Menken as the person who made the Disney renaissance great, which is valid, because his compositions are banging, however, it was the design philosophy of Howard Ashman that really set how the movies would be made. Incidentally this is also probably why Beauty and the Beast is the only Disney animated musical, and was the first Disney animated feature to be nominated for Best picture, because the Studio gave Ashman Carte Blanche to do what he wanted with the movie. Sadly Ashman died during the production which is why it's dedicated to him. A few things that Miranda seems to have taken from Ashman are making the songs integral to the plot, backing the vamp up under the dialogue as seen here, and embracing the surreal nature of animation to highlight the emotions the song is expressing. When discussing Musical Theater Ashman would tell people that when things get emotional you start playing music, when the emotions get to high for talking you start singing, and when the emotions get to high for singing you start dancing.

It's not just #1 on YT trending, it's the top Album on the Billboard charts and damn near every song off of it is in the Hot 100.

The Dos Oruguitas scene and song were the most beautiful and tear jerking part of the entire movie I love when movies almost (even better if they do) make me cry which is what a lot of Disney movies have been missing for me recently

I loved how you were in absolute AWE with the climax of the song where all the characters overlap in song and as soon as it fnishes you just go “who the heck is Bruno?!” Lol it made me laugh but I hope you get to watch the movie and enjoy it :)

i dunno if someone’s said this, but look at the balcony behind Delores in the rap, she’s the only one who “hears him now…”

Yes, this song has been playing on my mind for how many days already lol. The song was made really well, kudos to the person who was responsible for the lyrics, the melody, and the singers, such a nice masterpiece.

I LOOOOVE Felix! Imagine how hard it is to keep Tia Pepa happy and calm.... he's great at it. I love the way he echoes and amplifies her.

I love the Bruno character in the film. He’s basically cursed instead of gifted like the myth of Cassandra.

Bruno can see the future, but because of that anything he says is taken like a prophecy. The first lady has powers where her mood affects the weather so when he said something that sounded like he predicted rain(it was later revealed that he was just trying to reassure her that everything was fine) she super stressed and caused a hurricane, hense the line "in doing so he floods my brain"
