We all have to agree that Matt is not Avi, so they just had to adapt to him. Though he is the supposed bass of the group, we all have to agree that his voice is different from a normal bass and I'm really happy that they opted to give him more ways to shine and adapt the songs at his range. If you see them live and them singing songs like halleluja you'll notice the difference and how they all adapt their old songs to fit him. Is kinda sweet and they are all great. It's like he is not there to replace Avi, but to be another fifth member of the group.

I loved Avi and I was very sad to see him go. I was a little worried when they brought Matt in as the bassist but this renewed my faith in the group. They clearly acknowledge without ever saying it that they need the super low bass that Avi brought but his voice was so distinctive so they had to rework things to make everyone shine and everything flow. I am proud of them for doing things this way.

You're only the second one to point out that Matt had Mitch cover the highest part of his solo, well spotted. I agree with Marco that Scott's lower register is warmer than Matt's. You might hear more in superfruit songs, or Scott's "I'm gonna tell ya momma on you". They found a beautiful way of changing the key for Kirsten's solo, and then the wavy run by the trio was epic. I agree with others, your extensive comments are warranted because of the incredible arrangement of this epic song. Thank you.

Scott is a lyric baritone. His voice extends well into both the bass and tenor ranges. When Matt (or previously Avi) sings a solo and the underlying harmonies require bass notes, Scott regularly supplies them. *Everyone* in Pentatonix has a range that exceeds their nominative ranges. Kirstie is officially a mezzo soprano. That's the lowest soprano voice, just above alto. But Kirstie can sing as high as Mitch. Mitch's range is just over 6 *octaves!* Kevin is another lyric baritone, but his voice doesn't go down into the bass range like Scott's. Instead it goes way high into the tenor range, and that's just before he engages his beautiful falsetto range. Add in the fact that he's also a cellist and a saxophonist and you have a top-notch musician. Add to that the fact that he apparently eats drum kits for breakfast and you have one of the best percussion sections of any band out there, including bands with several drummers with real drums. But Kevin can also *sing.*

Let's dispel the argument that Matt and Avi sing bass vs. mid-range solo differently. They actually don't. Both use an affected bass. Both sing in the mid-hi baritone when they sing solo. Avi goes to bass a little more naturally than Matt, but that's more a difference in technique than end-effect - and that would likely be because Avi trained in opera. As for Scott, he is a full baritone. He can go low into the upper-bass register, or go high into the low/mid-tenor in his chest voice. Because he had Avi, and now Matt (bass), and Kevin (also a baritone), he's never needed to sing low solo. But you HAVE heard him sing this low before. Every time Avi or Matt sings solo, it's Scott filling in on bass to allow Kevin to stay on percussion. But it IS rare to hear him go low solo, so it's something to appreciate just how complete a singer he is.
@Texastigerdigsdetects5 жыл бұрын
I agree with almost everything, but Kevin is a tenor, you will hear him go up to falsetto from time to time in some of his solo work. Baritones can't maintain a falsetto that seamlessly for any length of time.

Matt can go too low for a baritone. It is quite usual for basses to hit high notes in mixed and headvoice. And Matt definitely starts to use mixed register whenever he is not singing bass. This is the same reason why many basses are countertenors- they can go much lower with headvoice than other voice types.

Don't ever be sorry! I like hearing people who know more about music then I do explain things that were going-on! I was really shocked when Scott sang a solo in his lower register. As far as we can remember as fans that's never happened. In the past he carried the bass line when Avi was singing a solo. And that's it! Also, I didn't hear one single riff or run come from Scott. I was blown away by that! It would have been to soulful for the sound of this song. And he was using his vocal fry beautifully! I also love that they didn't have Mitch do any vocal acrobatics in the stratosphere. I love when Mitch accentuates his solo with an exclamation point of a high note! But it wouldn't have been right for this song. And Matt saying with such fullness and richness for his solo adding the vibrato at the right point and never once falling off at the end of those held out notes. And he emoted beautifully! I keep in mind that he had just graduated from Berkeley when Pentatonix scooped him up. He didn't have a lot of experience as a professional musician yet. He was only 23 and look at how much the remaining members of the original group have grown in 7 years. Matt's going to get better and better and he seems to be a fast learner, and according to other members of the group he's a very hard worker. I know that he still taking vocal coaching and I'm confident that the lower end of his range will be fleshed out quite soon! When he's singing in his bass register from the very beginning of a song, like in Making Christmas from A Nightmare Before Christmas. He sounds absolutely great way down there in those bass notes even when they perform it live! Just really really glad that you guys watched this and enjoyed it!

Scott beat Matt in the bass?? Really? Matt descended a whole octave on "Sooound" Scoot stayed in range of the song.

Honestly, it doesn’t really matter. They both did an incredible job in this cover. For the record however, Matt completely knocked this shit out the park. In one line, he proved that he not only deserves to be in this group, but that he ain’t just”Avi’s replacement”. He was EASILY the best sounding in this song, and since he’s joined the group I personally think that they are better for it. (Nothing against Avi, he’s a legend. PTX though basically rediscovered themselves in the transition and now they sound even more perfect.) Matt has brought an unbelievable energy to this group, and I highly suggest listening to a live performance. The dude sounds the same as if he were in a recording booth. Do you understand just how rare that is?

I actually really like that you took time in the beginning to give thoughts and assumptions before watching. ALSO do you two like 80s music? Do you like figure skating? How about fantastic harmonies?? If you do you'll LOVE the new Superfruit video, The Promise!!

I dunno, they sing beautifully, but that song is very Schlager, and that's a genre that has a very particular (not so good) reputation and standing in Germany. You may not like it as much as people think you will. Or maybe you will. I dunno how you feel about Schlager.
