That's a tough call... it probably depends on my mood at the time. Sometimes I'll prefer the darkness of the Disturbed take on the song, other times I prefer the soaring, almost joyful harmonies of PTX. On balance, given that I'm a huge Pentatonix fan, I would probably lean towards their version of it.

I refuse the challenge. Simon and Garfunkel, Disturbed, Pentatonix--all three give masterful performances. And each arrangement is iconic in itself. Yes, the PTX version was probably influenced by Disturbed's, but I don't see it as a cover of it. I'm keeping--and loving--all three, thank you very much. (There's something magical about Art Garfunkel's voice, though . . .)
@TheInkdN3rd2 ай бұрын
It's been said many a time that Simon & Garfunkel's original was meant to be a warning, Disturbed's version was anger that we didn't heed the warning, & Pentatonix's version holds hope that we will overcome. When you listen to each version with this thought, you can both hear & feel it even though the lyrics are all the same. My personal favorite is PTX because I literally feel the hope. Glad you enjoyed as always!

I've never thought of this as a cover of Disturbed's cover. Instead it feels like Pentatonix took a lot of Disturbed's intensity and restores the S&G melodies. Also, thanks for illustrating the complex rhythms and key change.⬅ On a side note, I cannot believe I watched their video 3 or 4 times without really noticing the lens flair. Now I cannot not see it.

I agree. I've never once heard this referred to as s cover of disturbs cover. Ptx always refer to Simon and Garfunkle when talking about this song. Ptx definitely added the melody back that disturbs gritty version took away.

For an indisputable cover of a cover, check out Pentatonix' "Mad World". The song was originally by Tears for Fears and released in 1982. In 2001, Michael Andrews and Gary Jules completely reworked the poppy beat and almost Caribbean flavor to become the slow, haunting melody most people are familiar with today. That version was used as the theme song to the movie Donnie Darko. Pentatonix clearly worked off the movie version.
@Joodster2 ай бұрын
So many reviewers seem to miss, or neglect to mention, two things that you pointed out: The point where Mitch seamlessly takes over the melody line for Matt at the top, and that Scott seamlessly takes over the bass line. One thing that always stood out for me (because I *love it*) is Scott's change in timbre at about 2:17. Is it just me or does it change in the middle of the word Vision--from breathy to more...what's the word?...full? Solid? At any rate--I wish he sang like that more often. Two things I love to hear: Scott in his lower range and Mitch in his lower range. You mentioned Kirstin's vibrato--I seem to remember reading somewhere that she has been working very hard on mastering her vibrato.

In “Problem” Kevin vocalizes “one less problem without you” while also beatboxing, so I believe he’s perfectly capable of singing and beatboxing on alternate beats.
@janeramirez87672 ай бұрын
And he does it live, too--except that in live performances, you can't here the "s" at the end of "less." Pretty impressive, though, that he can whisper (not "sing," I would say) and beatbox at the same time.
@anna90722 ай бұрын
@ yes, when I referred to the “Problem” performance I deliberately said “vocalized” since he really isn’t singing. But Sir Hairless was wondering if he was alternating beats between singing and beatboxing and I was just saying I think he likely could.

Personally, I think the only reason that many people have said that PTX's version is "a cover of the Disturbed cover" is because of how low Scott starts the song off. We don't often hear him singing solo in his lower register. The only other song I can think of off-hand where Scott starts off singing this low (or nearly this low) is The Prayer, which is highly recommended for a little bit closer to Christmas, even though (once again!) it's not really a Christmas song. But other than Scott singing low, there's nothing in this version that reminds me of the Disturbed version. The "growth" that you mentioned at the end is something that PTX does in almost all of the songs they do - it's more of a PTX trademark than "covering" the Disturbed version, as far as I'm concerned. To me, it's simply another cover of the original great song, but with a Pentatonix flair. I'll be moving over to Patreon after I finish with this to hear what you thought of the live version from the Hollywood Bowl!

Yesssssss finallyyyyyyy This is your second video of the four ‘epic’ PTX songs as I like to call them. The first is Can you feel the love tonight, which is really like a massive saga with ever changing sections with a gorgeous Mitchslap as the final touch. I really enjoyed watching your video on that. The second is Sound of silence with I am so happy you finally did it. I’ve been excited the last two days actually since you did Disturbed’s version. It’s a really powerful arrangement without no one in particular standing out, but results in an amazing culmanative force. The third is Hallelujah, which I believe many other people would have recommend already. It’s easily one of PTX’s most popular songs, with some distinctive features as Scott’s bass, Kirstie’s belting, and (spoiler) a nice Mitchslap. It’s such a beautiful song, little bit less intense than Sound of silence, and bit more emphasis on the melodic beauty. The last is Prayer, which I see other people are already recommending. It is probably the song I consider as the most beautiful song by PTX. Just think of it as their cover of Imagine but even better. Kirstie really stands out in the song I think. I will bet any amount of money that it will give you goosebumps all over. Thank you so much for this video, and I hope you enjoy the other two epics in the near future!

Well you hooked me into Patreon with that live reaction. Couldn’t resist. 🤪 I’ve seen them live several times. Scott goes off script more than the rest of them IMO. I don’t know if they plan it or not but they’ve been singing together so long, they seem to easily adapt to it. I love their live performances because I can always hear their voices so distinctly. Ed Boyer, their studio mixer, does a good job not totally blurring their sound. Sometimes layering their vocals melds their sound more than necessary. Again, I’m biased towards their live performances. PTX’s version to me has some of the flavor of the Disturbed version but it is much more uplifting. Mitch and Kirstie use their lower range in their solos but their upper range for the backing vocals. I love that combo. Great reaction as always. I find it so interesting how different artists interpret songs. PTX always surprises me.

I've always felt that Disturbed's version of the "Sound of Silence" communicates to me a rather dark/angry impression while PTX's makes me feel a somewhat cautionary hopefulness but that's just my opinion. Would love for you to react to the most recent Pentatonix version of "Oh Holy Night." Christmas isn't far away!🎅
