Note, any chain has a tight area and a loose area, this gets more apparent the older the chain - check the tension at various points spin the wheel and you'll see. Make sure you check the chain at the Tightest point, adjust rear wheel to the slack at the tightest point (if you check and adjust at the slack point and run it - it can cause damage to your gear driven sprocket or even break the chain). One more point that may save you one day, always carry a spare split link on your keyring or in your bike tool box - you may need it, or can help out another rider if they need one.

You are right that the nut is 18 mm but I had only 19 mm wrench in my tool box, used that and listed it in tools USED.

First thing on my to do list, very informative,by the i would like to share one problem which i faced this days when in straight uphill climb on my classic 350 twin Sparks slight wobbling on handle bar can be felt which i sometimes assume generating from mid section of the bike, wobbling/shaking becomes stronger with pillion rider.plis suggest what to check.centre bush, both front and rear wheel bearings replaced front fork also checked even rear shock absorber also adjust stiffer but still problem persists.plis kindly suggest what to do next singhji

Your videos are very simple and clean- good work. On my Classic 500 (2011 model)- I have a very annoying problem- when i ride two-up with a heavy person, there is creaking sound from somewhere in the bike... on the right side- which is heard only when I accelerate, on upslopes, when I come off speed breakers... Single seat no issue. There is NO problem with mudguards, swing arm bushes, chain tension, chain lube, quality of chain... the problem disappears when I am one-up and no amount of climbing or 'pulling' can recreate this creak-creak-creak that happens when with a pillion load. I suspect only the rear shocks, but if they are bad/substandard- what are they causing to creak in the engine or the rear wheel. It is so bloody annoying. Please help.

Thanks ! Assuming your suspicion of rear shocks is correct, its spring coils at the top end may be rubbing on the inside of small shroud or spring is rubbing against chain cover. The spring may not be straight or bends slightly when under load. The top and bottom mounts and bushings of rear shocks should be greased. Do you adjust pre-load when someone sits behind you ? If not try increasing pre-load to near max. Besides rear shocks, the sound may be due to wheel bearings. Another possibility is that the rear brake comes on under too much load and rubs against drum, if brake is set tight. On a stationary bike, have a big guy sit towards the rear seat, and from behind push the bike down to compress rear shocks fully. Can you hear the sound ? Also check frame thoroughly for any hairline cracks or joints coming apart. If everything checks out OK, the sound may be from inside shock absorbing tube or you may need stronger rear shock springs because the shocks may be bottoming out. If your rear shocks have air tube on the side, check its pressure.

In the tools required the wrench given is 19 mm but the cover plate anchor nut is 18 mm.

Why is snail position different depending right or left? on my motorcycle right was on 10 notches and left 14 notches. I just adjusted my chain and both on 14 notches seems aligned correctly.

4:43 onwards; some serious piece of advice. My misaligned bullet doesn't balance with the same number of notches on both sides and required a bit of tweaking to keep the alignment.

Yep mine too, (Bullet 65) I like to measure from a fixed point equidistant from the rear spindle either side to check everything is in line. One other thing, check the tension again off the stand preferably with someone aboard to compress the rear suspension a bit, it makes a difference. Cheers. Dave Northumbria UK.

I just had my mechanic adjust my chain. It was too loose. I noticed a hot smell when riding later. Rear brake was seizing up. Now broken and in shop. My guess is that when he tightened the chain he failed to loosen the rear brake rod. Now I am facing a potentially large bill to repair my rear brake.... Do you think that this is his fault? He told me when I brought it back that "No, the brake has nothing to do with the chain tensioner" I suspect that either he is lying or that he is just a bad mechanic... what do you think?

Talk to the manager or the owner about what you think might have happened when they adjusted the chain. Alternatively loosen the chain, readjust rear brake, and tighten all the nuts. Then ask him to tighten the chain and watch him closely how he does it.

singh5g After explaining my concerns he charged me 39 dollars to replace my brake pads. (burned out) no fuss, no muss. guess it barely covered the cost of parts.
