I stumbled across these kinds of sirens one day and it's what allowed me to reach my high falsetto that I'd lost in my 20s and gave me hope that I wouldn't be stuck in a bass range for the rest of my life. Blew my mind. Try it ppl! Best thing I ever did.

Higher and lower pitched cartoon voices were really good for me to loosen up and get used to 'sounding different' from my speaking voice. It's also a ton of fun. I think the hardest part is I still don't always feel I'm putting more effort into high notes than I need to after I get a bit tired. Getting sirens to connect going up in pitch took a lot of work too for me, and they still break sometimes. Even though I'd say I'm more of a natural baritone (used to start having trouble around a D but would push to a G poorly) I've been able to sing some Helloween, The Darkness, and Greta Van Fleet decently. I think everyone should take time in their car in the morning to experiment. We all sing in the shower or car. By learning a little bit more about your voice, you can have even more enjoyment singing for fun. You don't need to desire to be a professional singer to want to improve your voice.

The siren thing really helps to get comfortable with the head voice, Andy is amazing. Also what I learnt from an Italian opera singer on YT is when you sing high notes just like any other notes you don't try to reach "up" that's where to get all stuck but rather hit that high note in your head and just aim right at it

I remember going through this exact journey some years ago, and this made my voice so much more relaxed and smooth. The fact that I can sing for hours without strain today, and how much of a strain I actually put myself through in the past without even realizing, in order to sing higher notes... Nowadays I don't even try to sing anything like I did in the old days, honestly. It FEELS bad. And I honestly thought I was doing things by the book back then, but I'd still get some vocal fatigue from time to time, and a lot more inconsistency in what I could and couldn't sing.

Very helpful video, about 6 months ago I had a pretty poor high voice and over this past 6 months by watching this channel and just general playing around with my voice I have “unlocked” my higher range and not to blow my own trumpet im sounding pretty good now, still room for improvement, there always is, but it’s definitely getting there so thank you. Also I have learned a great warm up that works for me is singing “loose it all - Sam Tompkins” and also singing (although most of the song isn’t high but certain parts are) “blind eyed (live version) ren/sam Tompkins”. I definitely recommend these songs for not only a general warm up because of the range of vocals but definitely for warming up that higher range

Curious to say, but the conversational thing has ringed some bell in me more on the artistic crafting of oneself's vocal style, than on the pitch which it was originally intended to. I really think that "conversation" exercise might help with getting a natural singing for those (like me) who tend to be too rigid and think things like "i must respect this metric, i must take these notes".

It’s less about volume and more about compressing air. Utilizing diaphragm and different resonance spots in your head. Let the mic do most the work. Also learning to stop trying to sound like the singer you’re covering. I mean you hit the notes and use proper dynamics but a huge breakthrough for singing is finding your tone. Being happy with your own tone.

Funny video. I do different. Dont know how but I can do: I listen to a higher word of a song and think to myself "lets try to go into that range!" And after a few tries... Voi la la! Soft, but its there! Next step is trying to stay in that range as long as I can and trying to push a bit and: most important thing is relaxing the hole body ... Good luck!

I'm amazed by Andys vocalabilities and I wish I could scream at least a little like him. But one thing I noticed in this video especially is, that he is really tensing his throat and pushing his jaw forward when hitting higher notes. Doesnt this affect his voice? For me this has been a huge problem for many years and I had to and still kinda have to unlearn this everytime I sing in order to stay relaxed and not get tight in the throat. This to me is actually the hard part about using mixed voice. Was just wondering if he is aware of doing it and how he manages to not get tight in the throat when sunging like this.
@zip753
@zip753 3 ай бұрын
I don’t think it’s about tensing up, but more about shaping your vocal tract for better tone and resonance. I’m a beginner and I’ve recently started playing around with opening my mouth wider, and it has a lot of positive side effects - I feel like I have more room with the placement and more stability when trying to place the sound in the middle, which also helps to make a smoother change between high and low placement. It also means that I can push more air more confidently, which obviously creates bigger resistance from the vocal cords, but it’s not the same as the neck tension in the context of chest pulling. And the feeling is very different - one is tensing up and another one is projecting. At least in my beginner book 😁

I actually think I found my way to access mixed voice by imitating Gollum 😄I had been experimenting with the dying cat approach for quite some time, but it was pretty inconsistent. One day, however, I was fooling around with Teenage Dirtbag and went into a (clean) Gollum voice and suddenly hit those high notes without any effort whatsoever. I guess the thing with Gollum is that, if it sounds really bad and whiney, you're nailing it. Or at least I'd like to think that for me it was a way to abandon the idea of sounding 'good' in order to practice more freely. Anyhow, repeat after me: WE'RE LOOKING FOR BILBO BAGGINS PRECIOUS LOOKING FOR BILBO BAGGINS PRECIOUS BECAUSE FILTHY BAGGINS STOLE OUR PRECIOUS THE THIEF OOOOHHH 🤣🤣🤣

I want to add that higher pitch notes develop when you sing with the lowest pitch of the voice register. That way so you can understand, take clean head voice and go as low as possible... the tone should sound like underwater... try to sing several days or weeks in low head voice... with proper rest and exercise you going to notice your head voice strength, control and range extended. Now, try to get same thing but with whistle register... I had 1 note available with whistle register 3 years ago, but now I have like full octave of whistle register... not only that, but whistle and head voice register have mixed notes available, making my vocal range big... BTW hitting higher notes requires more whistle register position than head voice and almost no chest voice register... I can sing Maroon 5 songs with ease while I am bass voice.

Try looking into flute/flageolet/whistle register/M3 exercises. It'll take a long time to develop it, but lower range singers like Leo Maia, Ken Tamplin, and Kegan DeBoheme do a great job demonstrating what's possible when you develop that part of your voice in conjunction with your head voice/M2

You can't "mix" chest and head voice, they are two distinct mechanisms that are mutually exclusive and cannot be combined. What the "mixed voice" really is, is just head voice manipulated to sound more similar in timbre to chest voice than it normally would. And "head voice" itself just falsetto done with a less "hooty" timbre. Try it out yourself, if you do it right you can start a note in falsetto, slide it into head voice whilst still singing the same note, and then slide into "mix", all without any vocal break occurring. Ultimately there is only chest voice and falsetto, plus manipulation of timbre. From the point of view of what the vocal cords are doing, it's all the same mechanism. This is why Axl Rose sounds like Mickey Mouse on the high notes now - he's just not as capable any more of manipulating the sound and power of his falsetto into raspy scream mode.
@arnisgustins
@arnisgustins 2 ай бұрын
While this might be true this is not helpful in any way. It's much more intuitive to say "mix your head voice with chest voice" instead of "head voice manipulated to sound more similar to chest voice". You could go and simplify it even further by saying that there is no chest voice or falsetto at all, it is just vocal fold vibration in different ways but whats the point. It's all just made up terminology to make it easier to grasp.
@CommodoreGrayum
@CommodoreGrayum 2 ай бұрын
@@arnisgustins It doesn't make it easier to grasp though. Calling it a "mix" doesn't illuminate anything about 1) what it is, or 2) how you're supposed to actually DO it. And as to your second point, no, chest voice and falsetto are two very different things that it's easy to tell apart and to produce. That's why the idea is useful, because it represents a solid reality. And pointing out that "mix" is a modified falsetto actually gives people the CORRECT starting point for trying to do it. Otherwise you're left with countless people _trying_ to do a mix and failing, and a few lucky ones managing to fall into doing it completely by accident before giving up entirely.
@Randuski
@Randuski 2 ай бұрын
@@CommodoreGrayumthe reality is, getting specific about the mechanism doesn’t help anyone, because we don’t have that level of proprioception of our vocal tract. Teaching people how to sing is getting people to try to mimic sounds, explaining things in weird metaphorical ways, and hoping they accidentally do it right, and then do it again, until they know how it feels. It’s all nonsense, and it kind of has to be. You can’t tell someone to close their false folds over their vocal folds, unless they already know what it feels like to move their false folds independently, for example.
@CommodoreGrayum
@CommodoreGrayum 2 ай бұрын
@@Randuski Except this is not what I'm talking about, I'm talking about the difference between doing chest voice and doing falsetto. Which everyone understands perfectly well. Add to that modulating air flow, breath support, adding compression via pressure and constriction, and changing the posture of the face and larynx to change the tonality. These are all things that are understandable and can be done deliberately, and are not beyond people's proprioceptive abilities. You're basically making excuses for bad advice, by claiming that better advice is somehow impossible. Sure, various subtleties can only be felt out by experimentation, like with literally any physical skill, but this notion that the fundamentals can't be talked about accurately and usefully, and that instead you have to resort to untrue nonsense (which is somehow... better?), is completely wrong.
@Randuski
@Randuski 2 ай бұрын
@@CommodoreGrayum changing the posture to the face is a great example of what I was saying. That is not a mechanical explanation of what’s going on. Because, telling someone exactly how to flex the musculature of the vocal tract to achieve that result would mean nothing to anyone. So, you use words like posture, or placement, to give someone an idea of what something should feel like.
