Helen Charlston is a young mezzo-soprano who is creating a significant reputation for herself in opera and especially in concerts, where she is becoming a favoured mezzo soloist of conductors such as Paul McCreesh and Stephen Layton. She won the first prize in the 2018 London Handel Singing Competition and is a Rising Star of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment for 2017-19.
Here she tackles Lilli Lehmann's "Great Scale" - the exercise par excellence for steadiness and uniformity of tone; the blending of the registers; and above all, stamina.
