@pmarengo21 Жыл бұрын
Nicole Scherzinger IS classically trained; from an early age. She attended a performing arts high school and then majored in musical theater in college. She actually considers herself to be an opera singer who crossed over to pop music. It's kind of funny that many people who don't know her background think she's a pop singer who occasionally crosses over to classical and musical theater, when it's just the opposite. Nicole is about to have to have the lead playing Norma Desmond in a new West End production of ALW's Sunset Boulevard starting on September 18th (2023). She and Andrew Lloyd Webber have been friends for quite a while; that's why there are so many KZbin videos around of her singing his songs, e.g., POTO, Don't Cry For Me Argentina, Memory (from Cats).

All four of these men have indeed played the Phantom in the past - all in the West End. In the order you hear them sing: - John Owen-Jones (aka JOJ) - generally thought of as one of the best Phantoms and is one of the actors who has played the role the most times in the world (same is true for his time in Les Mis as Valjean) - Ramin Karimloo - one of best known modern actors in the role, thanks to his performance in the 25th anniversary concert - Simon Bowman - best known for originating the role of Chris in Miss Saigon opposite Lea Salonga - Earl Carpenter - like JOJ he is generally thought to be one of the best in the role (and also has a long history with Les Mis - just as Javert instead of Valjean)
@Sweeney5414 жыл бұрын
oh, and if you want a dark and sensual performance of this song - I'll recommend the one by Lesley Garrett and Michael Ball. It's a fantastic performance! (she is an opera singer and he is pretty much West End royalty - among other things he originated the role of Marius in Les Mis) Here's a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3K8lqSvp6uKjbc

I appreciate that the analysts are mainly attempting to identify what she is doing, but I didn't really agree with quite a lot of the commentary here. As the analysts noted, Scherzinger is singing the part her way rather than trying to conform to some musical theatre standard. But I don't think that's because she is reflecting some kind of pop singer training. I think it's because she's, you know, an international singing megastar and doesn't think she has to copy anyone else. You can see her doing much the same on her "Never enough" version, where she uses head in parts when other singers belt, not because she couldn't belt it (she does belt the same notes in the piece when she wants to) but because she wants to do it her way. I think it's the same here. When most singers do that part at the end, they go big and resonant in their sound because that's how they can be secure in notes that high and because that's how they want to impress. Scherzinger chooses instead to do something vocally harder. She does high head voice notes with perfect control but at a restrained volume, demonstrating a high degree of vocal mastery. She maintains enough resonance for a kind of angelic beauty in the sound, but with very impressive control. That's not some limitations from her training or instinct. That's her vocal choices. Sarah Brightman of course defined the role. She's great, but you can hear a clear change in her vocal tone when she shifts to the C near the end. She suddenly makes a much narrower sound (she did that even when she was at her peak; I'm not talking about her recent performances). Scherzinger maintains a more even quality across all those high passages, which feels more polished. Scherzinger also has better deep notes than Brightman, near the start. But I prefer Brightman's first "The Phaaantom", so you pays your money and you takes your choice. There are some comments below about the little waver on Scherzinger's last note. That seemed clearly to me to be a choice, a kind of surrender to a little shriek, perhaps partly of despair or perhaps with a sexual connotation. I don't hear any flaw there. For what little it's worth (not much), I hear two flaws. She sings "speaks my name, and do I" as if she has a slight cold. (That might have been literally the case.) And her vibrato at the start of "phaaantom" (at about 0.51) is wavering slightly wrong. Otherwise her singing is immaculate and deliberate - as she always is.

I think I knew at one point that Nicole could sing better than a typical pop singer. But wow! WOW!!!!!!!!!! Even though she isn't producing the final (sing for me) notes the way most Christine's would, she still sounded great. Like...surprisingly so. Each time she was about to go to the next note up, I thought, "she's bound to screw this up..." yet she never did. Genuinely impressed. That's a lot of strength and control for hitting those notes that way, no? (I ask because I've been singing all my life but any classes I took were with many people, so I didn't get a significant technical education. So sometimes I'm less certain about what I hear.)

@@ayanp353 Expecting a mistake is not a desire to see someone fail. I expect to drop something at least once every day, but I don’t WANT it to happen. lol I honestly expect everyone to mess up a difficult piece. After all, there is a lot that is happening during a performance. As much as a performer prefers to become lost within a role, you have to be aware of your surroundings and mind your technique. All of this impacts the possibility of mistakes occurring. It’s easy to lose focus, and our body can betray us at any given moment.
