An example of Lin-Manuel Miranda's genius: Burr's "I want" song appears part way through the second act...because it totally fits the character.
@Tenchigumi3 жыл бұрын
Another brilliant thing is, despite all the genuine emotion Burr shows here, Alexander's right: we never learn what Burr truly believes in. Wanting to simply "be in the room where it happens" is an empty goal: _why_ does he want to be in that room? What does he want to _make happen_ in that room? We never know, and without that information, it would appear that Burr only sought power for the sake of power, as opposed to Alexander who wanted to "build something that'll outlast [him]" and is agonizingly explicit when explaining his goals.

On the comment of the lisp, Leslie himself doesn't have one. It isn't clear whether the historical Aaron Burr had a lisp, but Leslie has one when playing Burr. This seems to have been part of Burr's characterization, since other actors playing Burr also give him a lisp, whether the actors themselves have one or not. I'm not sure what the significance of the lisp is, or if it was just a quirk added to Burr, but in plain terms: Leslie Odom Jr does not have a lisp. Hamilton's Aaron Burr has a lisp. It is unclear whether the historical Aaron Burr had a lisp or not.
@enchanted_inventory8823 жыл бұрын
actually it's the microphone placing I think that gave him a lisp since he doesn't have one in the cast recording and he couldn't wear one like everyone else since he doesn't have enough hair
@weirdbunmi3 жыл бұрын
@@enchanted_inventory882 That's entirely possible as well. I didn't even think about the microphone placement, since Christopher Jackson also has a different placement for his mic. I just knew that other Burr actors have also had lisps, notably Giles Terera and Gregor Treco. However, these two naturally have lisps and I had believed they played up their natural habits (much as Jonathon Groff does for King George), and that Leslie may not have had a natural lisp but used it for his character. A microphone issue makes just as much sense, especially since I could not find any concrete documentation that the historical Aaron Burr had a lisp. (Though that search was some time ago and I wasn't looking very hard, and I haven't checked or dug deeper before writing this comment.)
@Tenchigumi3 жыл бұрын
So apparently different actors for Burr have ALSO portrayed him with the lisp, so it's possible that it was a direction thing, or maybe because they tried to closely match Leslie's origination of the character and decided to retain it. Then again, the cast album doesn't have the lisp so... the mystery continues.
@DoctorLuny3 жыл бұрын
One other point is to give him more depth as a character, soundtrack burr just sounds like he hates Hamilton whilst in the show he sound more happy and human
@Tenchigumi3 жыл бұрын
@@DoctorLuny I can definitely see that being the case. As pristine as the cast album may be, there's so much characterization that seems to be missing or was developed later, like how Groff calls for "everybody" to back up his singing in You'll Be Back: in the cast album he sounds happy and jovial, whereas live he sounds annoyed and demanding, which fits the character far more. I can imagine Burr's need to constantly "smile more" during live shows to produce more of a lisp as well.

A little trivia, when the backup singers call out names for the placement of the Capital, they were instructed to call out names of colonies from that time. Many people call this song, Burr's Be Prepared, or his villain song, because this is where he actually makes a change and where things could possibly be considered to have begun to go downhill for Burr. I mean, this song shows why Burr hated Hamilton. For as long as he knew him, Hamilton never stopped and always said exactly what he thought, he never held anything back from the public and it didn't do much to quell his career, while Burr never let anyone know his true position on matters. But then here, Hamilton is like "guess I'm gonna finally have to listen to you" and he gets what he wants, but on the other hand, when Burr finally decided to do things the way Hamilton did, which is go after what he wants and not hold back, he didn't get what he wanted and he blamed Alexander for it. Quite sad if you think about it. (Wow this was a long comment...sorry)
@Tenchigumi3 жыл бұрын
It's also Burr's official "I Want" song, which is what a character uses to declare their motivations and define their personality, and _normally_ occurs much earlier (for example, "My Shot" is the collective "I Want" song for half of the Act 1 cast, particularly Alexander, and occurs nears the beginning). However, the fact that Burr's "I Want" song occurs so late in the show contrasts Burr's philosophy of "waiting for it" against Alexander's tendency to do everything like he's running out of time. It also suggests that Burr's dedication to not letting them "know what you're against or what you're for" is so strong that he even managed to hide his own desires from himself... until his core philosophy was directly shattered by Alexander.
@fx4d3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and knowing that, you can see the lighting on the final pose is the same as Hamilton's on "My Shot" except Burr's pose is inverted, with his finger (gun) pointed down. Hamilton shoots for the stars (also to foreshadow the climax, of course).

I’ve watched several voice coaches review this one and it’s DRIVING ME CRAZY that no one takes the time to work through/go over/mention the transition to a mix of blues/jazz-scatty growl vocals and how that’s accomplished and how it relates to the character’s new more active approach going forward. It’s so incredible, and intensely connected to his character arc, as well as styled after a huge musical movement that changed music history and played a unique part in social progress and cultural dynamics. I just really get frustrated that I never hear ANYTHING about any of that

@@SongsFromASuitcase It would be interesting to know about the microphone placement and the difference in voice. I say this because I work in a news channel and there is a big difference when a person speaks with a handheld microphone in a frontal direction to the mouth or at chest height like a journalist does when on a live broadcast and a person wearing a lavalier microphone at chest level (either being exposed as is done with an interviewee or hidden in the costumes as occurs with an actor in a scene) Although there is clearly a difference between singing and speaking, the placement of the microphone greatly changes the tone of voice.

Aaron Burr had a lisp in real life, so Leslie is imitating the lisp. Apparently he only did this for the movie version and not the pure theatrical versions, but I could be misinformed. Leslie does not have a lisp naturally.

This song, from my point of view, is definitive proof that Leslie Odom Jr. would be a perfect Dr. Facilier if they ever made a live action The Princess and The Frog

God I just love Leslie's songs in Hamilton. Every single one of them. I will skip through the entire musical for songs where he leads first then do a full playthrough. I know a lot of people say "Room Where It Happened" is Burr's villain song but it's also telling us just how ambitious and conniving Ham is. The verse: Or did you know, even then, it doesn't matter where you put the US capitol Cause we'll have the banks We're in the same spot You got more than you gave And I wanted what I got When you got skin in the game, you stay in the game But you don't get a win unless you play in the game Ham is literally saying he sold out something of himself to get what he wanted to achieve his goal. So this may be Burr's villain song but it's also Ham's, to a degree.
@LizzieBravado3 жыл бұрын
I’ve never really thought of this as a villain song as much as an I Want song. This is the first time Burr has definitively expressed what he wants, something Hamilton first did in My Shot. It’s interesting to see the provocation that led to Burr expressing himself plainly.

Small mistake... you labeled the last section as David Diggs... when it should be Leslie Odem, Jr. Still great breakdown. This song has so much of that dirty Bourbon Street feel... I love it.

Usually Leslie's voice isn't that raspy, it's actually very silky and smooth but maybe his voice was overworked or he was sick because he doesn't sound like that live or on the recording.

A little note, in a live performance you might hear a lisp because an actor is trying to make sounds, like s, more pronounce so people in the far back can hear it. Therefore it might sound like a lisp. 😁
