I was listening to Tony Martin in Sabbath recently, it is interesting how much of Dio's phrasing he has, as if he listened to Dio singing Ozzy rather than going nasal and bright like Oz. TM does not get quite the I'm guessing Fry mix that Dio has, yet uses a lot of lower range. Martin is his own singer yet influences are obvious . The 2022 Thorns album is incredible. Sometimes it resemble Metal Core yet with actual singing instead of Distorted Death cookie monster vocals

Yes! Tony always reminded me of Dio‘s phrasing and even some of his tonality. That‘s one of the reasons why I love some of Martin‘s Sabbath albums so much. He was a phenomenal singer on the records and at least to me the most underrated rock/metal singer ever.

I wish I had motivation to PRACTICE but I don't. :( Question... when you are up in that really high falsetto/headvoice area whichever it is, can you add distortion up there (you meaning, Eli)? I can't remember if you did it that high but just wondering of so, how and what would it sound like? IOW, would you be able to replicate the Cinderella/Brian Johnson sound up there or higher or is there a kind of limit to having distortion in that high register? I think Halford had a kind of bite/grit on his when he sang high like on painkiller but it doesn't sound particularly distorted. anyway.... just thinking.

Some people that have a bit of grit in their voice to begin with will have a much easier time producing it and getting a natural sound. It takes a lot of patient and careful experimentation to get the placement just right so that there isn't too much wear and tear on the throat.

@@EliPrinsensHVTVocals yeah, I noticed by accident that sometimes if I don't deliberately try to distort, I get a really nice distortion that's more just a sandy grit up there and I later ask myself why not do that instead of shred my throat trying to sound like Dio? Sometimes I stumble upon that resonance and go wow, it's like I'm not pushing so hard but it's still vibrating really well. I guess there's a sweet spot for how hard to push and how to add that bite in there. thanks, mon
