I felt pretty good this morning, as I watched this video. I'm on an 8.4 handicap index and I really like that your middle level golfer is an exact match to my game. I've watched you enough now and heard the data your share, so this time I guessed the data percentages and selected the right club on every shot. I think I'm getting it and I hope to keep in a much better frame of mind as i get back on the course next spring! Thank you!

Glad the data is matching your game, keep using it and your expectation level will be in balance

A really good explanation on how understanding that realistic expectations for each shot is more important than the ambition of knocking every shot "stiff".

Yes, solid short game takes a lot of pressure off the full shot and long game!
@seanbainesАй бұрын
This is the level of short game I am aiming for this coming golf season in 2025 if I can get enough practice and playing. Background. Last year was my first year back after 13 years off. To say I was rusty is an understatement. I was nowhere near my old level of averaging around 90 and occasionally getting down below 85. I did make some progress despite an 8 week injury break mid summer. This coming year, I want to get the rest of the way back to 90, and start working down past 85. I have strengths to rely on, and weaknesses to work around. My putting has always been good, and I feel I am already better than the 90 shooter level. Your recent green reading video looks potentially very helpful. And by the end of the year I finally started making some progress towards getting back to being able to drive the ball safely in play very reliably at around 170-180 yards. That's 90 golf level. I know, because I used to do it that way. I don't get much distance, and probably never will. I've never hit driver more than 200 yards on average, and have never controlled it well enough to use it on tight holes. But I'm at least on the way to being able to use it on more open holes again. I've never been accurate enough to hit greens very consistently at full swing distance, but I'm making progress towards getting more consistent at 100 yards, and hope to extend that out a little farther next year. But even so, I'm never likely to hit a lot of greens in regulation. So I need a sharper short game. Once I assemble the pieces of the game I started to display by late last year, and with a little polish and practice get back to 90, I figure the quickest way to get a little closer to 85 is to get acurate and consistent enough from 40 yards in to give myself an extra up and down or three per round. I don't expect to hit it stony all the time. But getting inside 15 feet from 40 yards and well inside 10 from 20-25, as you speak of here, would be very helpful. Plus I'll keep trying to get a bit more accurate into greens from 120 yards, and off the tee at around 200. Over time, hopefully both those numbers move out 10-20 yards. But for next year, the short game is likelier to produce quicker results. So that's my number one goal/focus. Thank you for the targets to aim for.

Hi Sean, I am a senior golfer that plays a similar game to you. I have termed it a three shot approach game and two putt for bogey. My driver distance is 180-190, 3 wood 160-170, 5 wood 150-160, 7 wood 145, 8 iron 110, 9 iron 100, PW 90, AW 80, GW 70, SW 60. Good luck in your endeavours!
@seanbainesАй бұрын
@@zazhou Yes, very similar. I'm 63. We are fellow travellers. Luck right back to you.

Use my 12 Shots of Golf Data to understand the result and not the club. Find what works for you. Played this week, playing partner hit 8 iron from 150 yards, I hit 6 iron, he tried to hit it too hard, made double bogey, I walked off with a birdie. Find what works for you
@seanbainesАй бұрын
@@TheResourcefulCoach I've been doing just that, and I find your benchmarks for each level of player very useful. Couldn't care less what club or swing length I use to hit a certain club, so long as it helps me hit my target. I'll happily hit a 3/4 swing 9 iron into a green 100-110 yards away if I hit it regularly. Who cares if someone else overswings a sand wedge at that! I already know my putting is better than the scoring level I play to. I'm now going to use your data to help me try to get my short game down to a similar level. That will help me a lot as a short hitter, I think.

Essentially, when your approach shot misses by 30-40 yards, you’ve made a mistake and now you just need to focus on minimizing the damage by saving bogey.
@TheResourcefulCoachАй бұрын
Could be, or that’s where your shot finished if you were unable to reach the green. The great challenge of golf is to play each shot on its own merits
@chrisearle7886Ай бұрын
@ Yes, when I was trying to break 90, these were shots I used often, and that’s cause I couldn’t hit a driver yet, so I just didn’t have the distance to reach a lot of greens. Now that I’m using driver off the tee (and trying to break 80) it’s not a shot I need very often (unless I’m not hitting well), but yes… still a crucial shot to have in the bag!!!

Excellent video again David - the numbers never lie. “In God we trust; everyone else needs to bring data” ~ W.E Demming Let’s say I want to become a single figure golfer. If I were practicing the last shot and hitting over a bunker on a short-game area; how would you practice? E.g. Would you hit 10 balls and see how many you could get within a certain distance and keep a record of it? What would you consider to be a good practice session to improve the short game? I wish you a very Happy Christmas. Thank you for all your efforts this year! 🎄

David, I recently discovered your channel and I’m really enjoying it. Question: Do you change your grip pressure on the short pitch shots? Thanks for sharing your talents! Bob
@TheResourcefulCoachАй бұрын
I would say it’s a feel thing. Slightly lighter if I hit in high and want it to land softly, then firmer if it is a shot I’m hitting in lower and running the ball. It fits how you want the ball to react on the green.
@uncleronstrixieАй бұрын
That makes perfect sense. Maybe that’s why my contact never feels solid. Thanks David

When you day down in three is average, does that include the shot to the green?
@TheResourcefulCoachАй бұрын
Yes, the shot on and 2 putts
@jgastelman8392Ай бұрын
Excellent lesson. The key is just to get it on the green. I just need to three putt less. 😊
@TheResourcefulCoachАй бұрын
Exactly, if you miss the green you will take a chip and 2 putts on average, which is no different to 3 putts. Likelihood is you’ll 2 putt some.

I totally agree. Proper course management is, "If you don't have a 75% chance of making the shot, stop, and reconsider." Play within your abilities and don't make a bad situation worse.

Know your capabilities on the course and stick to them.If you need a new skill go and practice it and then take it to the course
