Hey mr Zach. Im a retired logger od 35 yrs from middle Ga. I sawmill and keep up my property of mostly pine plantations and just try to enjoy each day as the Lord gives them to me. I believe that time is the most previous thing on Earth, so I try to use it wisely. I daydream about having a team of mules, but ive got small tractors to do the things that I would use a mule for. So watching your channel kinda eases my itch to get a pair. Not using fowl language, and letting God be a part of your vids is another reason I give you some of my time. Thks for foing a good job son. I appreciate what you r doing. AC

Thank you Mr AC! That means a lot. Good clean fun is what we’re after. I try to make it educational as we go. But I also want to include Jesus! If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t have anything anyway. He’s the reason I am alive and well. Thank you for such kind words my friend. Just pray that I can be a good tool to help others and encourage people. I am glad you enjoy our videos. Thanks for stopping by! Please come again!!

She is a good one for sure! My animals teach me probably as much or even more than I do them. They have the ability to teach a feller a lot, it only he’ll listen to them. It takes a little while to learn their language just as it does them to learn ours. But in the end…we learn a little and they learn a little. And it becomes a beautiful thing. Thanks for watching my friend and commenting! And thanks for the kind words. Take care

Thanks for sharing the video Zach. Hope y'all had a great Christmas and Happy New Year. Yes that single training is going to pay off for sure as they have to do it all by themselves. I'm right there with you on starting a load off easy as they can hurt themselves or you. You can definitely tell a farm or logging pair of mules or horses from the pulling event teams as they will lunge and hurt you or themselves. You are definitely right about reading them and letting them have a break and not trying to work them to much all the time. Thanks again. Wish me and my Grandpa had gotten a team before he passed away and took that knowledge with him.
@zachodom74869 ай бұрын
Hey brother! Thanks a bunch for the kind words. You’re correct in all you say. The way I pull mine is def different. I want them to ease up and tighten the traces….and then get tighter and tighter until either one the load moves or two I say whoa! But a man has to have enough sense to know when to say whoa! After they’ve given him a good try. He also needs to know when they’re jacking around and not putting out also. That takes a lot of experience of being around animals. But yes, I’m not into all the jerking and hyping a team up. That’s very dangerous for both parties. Thanks for the kind words my friend and for watching!

That single is work is good to keep them from having separation issues My mules was smaller and I didn't separate them along it turned into a problem that was a little trouble to overcome
@zachodom74869 ай бұрын
Yessir it can become a prob for sure! I’ve ran into it in the past. Mine now are pretty much past it. And usually I leave the other in the pen with the other mules…so that helps too. Thank you Mr Neil for always watching and commenting! Take care of yourself

I'm a horse man. I have really enjoyed your show..what I want to know is what makes a lead mule what is there job. Why they are on the left. They look like they are both doing the same job.
@zachodom74862 ай бұрын
Thank you, and I’m glad you have enjoyed it so far. So, a “lead” animal whether it be a horse or mule working in harness is always on the left hand side. The right hand animal is called the “off” side animal. Or off mule/horse. The lead mule gets its description from back in the day when they drove the 20 mule borax teams and artillery batteries hitches with a jerk line. I work four mule a lot with a jerk line or one line. The one line animal is on the left hand side or lead side. The odd animal must whatever the lead animal does. Usually your bigger animal goes on the off side and your smaller smarter animal on the left: it doesn’t always work that way tho. So, anyway…hope this helps ya understand a little better. Thank you for watching and commenting! Take care and do come again, please

2 questions sir, I know animals are smart but do you think Kate and Alice know when it's training to when it's actually work? Another channel I watch, Homestead. Horsemanship, he talks about how God made a gap in their teeth for a bit, do mules have this same gap? Keep up the good work. God bless
@zachodom74869 ай бұрын
No, I really don’t think they know the difference in the two. I try to simulate the load and distance for real world scenarios. The major difference is the surroundings. Being in the woods versus being in the wide open. This type of training is good for any work animal. It will be good for them for farming or for logging. You just have to simulate what you are trying to accomplish in either scenario. As far as their teeth, yes, there is a gap between their teeth. And the bit will sit there. Thank you for the questions, and thank you for the kind words! Thank you for watching and commenting.

Would you ever ride the 2 wheeler cart , pulling the tire behind , would that exercise the mule in a different way , or would that not be a training method , would you have to use 2 lines also , just wondering ! Stay safe ,& have fun training ?
@zachodom74869 ай бұрын
Yessir I could use the cart, but I’d have to put shaves on it for a single animal. It’s not too big of deal. But when I’m working single in the woods, I’ll be skidding flat on the ground like I am here. And using it this helps them prepare for skidding logs. Plus it helps teach them to get over when turning because the trace chains under load will pull their backends around should they resist at all. Mine are pretty good at that. But you don’t get that effect on a cart. I don’t like wheeled carts and one line stuff. It can be done and safe enough. I just don’t prefer it. Also, it helps walking beside them when they’re training because I can tap them easier to make em go on vs riding something behind them. Plus with me riding the tire at times it adds more weight for a temporary harder pull if you will, then I can simply get off and make it easier again. Simulating logs etc. Hey, thanks for the kind words and for watching! Take care

Funny how people think a team is good from the onset. There are only 2 ways to get that. Buy them trained or train them yourself. Either way the team will require fine tuning or training for the rest of their career. Nice work Zach.
@zachodom74869 ай бұрын
Thank you for the kind words! And yes you are right! Time is what makes a good work animal. It takes time and effort. The more they work, the more they will know! Of course good breeding is important. Some animals are better bred than others, and will catch on better than others. Thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate it
@SamDoe-zn3tu9 ай бұрын
@@zachodom7486 I really want to see how your collars fit without pads and the benefits of using them. It will be interesting to see how you start your young stock when they are ready.
@zachodom74869 ай бұрын
@@SamDoe-zn3tu my collars are half Sweeney collars, and without the pads they fit their neck really well. The main thing is to make sure that it will fit back on their shoulders and seat properly. I use pads for a cushion and to disperse the load on their shoulders. If I have time sometime, I will show that in one of my videos. But I do not remove my pads from my collars once I install them typically. As far as starting my colts… They get handled every day now. Around the barn and such. Barn manners is what I call it. But when the time comes, I will start them together and probably start them behind a tractor. Hooked to a small load and secured behind the tractor. The main thing with mules is… To make sure they never learn any bad habits from the get-go, Having the tractor in front and the load behind them ensures this. Then after a day or two of this, we will go to line driving without the tractor. And progress from there. I will show their training once we get to that point though. Thanks again for watching and following along with us
