@@ogprxd it’s challenging because it makes you face topics that are very uncomfortable. Such as depression, suicide, addiction, and incest and child abuse. And it talks about it in a grounded way. From what I understand, the original author faced many of these challenges personally.

What makes the No Longer Human more terrifying. is that the author (Osamu Dazai) who was going through hard times in his life, drowned his wife and himself right after a day of the publishing of his book. Some say No Longer Human was Dazai’s suicide note.

I am newly dipping my toe into manga, so these single volumes are a great way to test the waters so i can figure out what I like. Based on these recommendations I am going to pick up Sandland, All You Need is Kill, Zelda, Walking Man, and the Junji Ito books which were already on my list.

Thanks for the suggestions! I've been getting into manga more over the past year and have generally been avoiding the really long series because of the cost and difficulty getting them from my library. I've loved Goodnight Punpun, Sunny, and have a lot of Junji Ito's work. Definitely gonna check out some of these!

I've been interested in picking up All You Need Is Kill and Planetes (although that's in two volumes), as well as Rohan At The Louvre I'm excited for Akira Toriyama's Manga Theater (Short Stories) by Viz, but I'm also worried about censorship. They LOVE censoring his art. I'm still waiting for a completely uncensored version of Dragon Ball.

Nice list! How about some true shoujo royalty and Moto Hagio's The Heart of Thomas? Granted, like most of the Fantagraphics' Moto Shagio releases it only had one print run and now seems to sell for hundreds of bucks--but it is a brilliant manga, by perhaps the most important shoujo manga-ka (who deserves to be better known here) and a must for anyone with any interest in classic or shoujo manga.

Oh boy, I got some suggestions for ya. I noticed some of your suggestions required previous knowledge of an existing series so the ones I will suggest are completely stand alone single volume series: Smuggler by Shohei Manabe, it's the story of a group of men in charge of moving a dangerous criminal from one place to the next. Dont wanna spoil what happens, just look at the art and I guarantee you'll buy it. Color of Rage by Kazuo Koike, it's about 2 slaves (one African) that escape their slave ship as it was passing close to japan and their story as they try to avoid their captors in a new land they know nothing about. Lychee Light Club by Usamaru Furupa , this manga is literally the symbol for the manga collectors subreddit. Its reeeeeeeally weird, gory and sexual. The story can be a bit out there for some but give it a shot if you want something extremely unconventional. Scumbag Loser by Mikoto Yanaguti, keeping with the unconventional theme, this is a horror manga about a guy who is an absolute scumbag, the story follows him in his neverending quest to be the biggest piece of shit in the whole school. But why then does this gorgeous girl keep following him around? Maybe there is more to him than what's on the surface. Or maybe the girl is not the angel she appears to be. Velveteen and Mandala by Jiro Matsumoto, Omar has this manga in his collection. And I'm pretty sure if he ever reviewed it, KZbin would take down his channel. Check it out and find out why. The story makes no sense at first but comes together at the end. It's one of those series like FLCL that you need to pay more attention to the meaning behind the images than to the images themselves. Opus by Satoshi Kon, sadly we will never get a proper ending to this manga since we lost SK but I feel like the story is better as it stands without its ending. It's about a mangaka that realizes the characters in his stories suddenly developed free will. And now he gets dragged down into the stories he wrote.

All You Need is Kill and Rohan at The Louvre are great manga, their artwork is amazing and their respective stories are pretty good. As a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fan, Rohan is one of my favourite characters in the JoJo verse so reading the Rohan manga made me appreciate the manga more. I love Obata's artwork in All You Need is Kill. As a Zelda fan, I read A Link to the Past manga a couple of years ago. I love the colours and the size of the pages for the manga however, I felt the story fell flat in my opinion but then again, my expectations of Zelda's stories are low. I still have yet to read Solanin and Uzumaki so I will get around to reading those soon. You've persuaded me with the Walking Man and No Longer Human which I put on my 'to-read' list.
