@dsashulya4 жыл бұрын
shadows are visible and not completely dark because there’s reflected light. and since it’s reflected, it carries the colour of the surface it jumped off of, only much weaker. marco bucci has the best explanation of that i’ve ever found, highly recommend checking out his vids out on ambient light (and just his channel in general)

To add, colour is a very complicated affair (without even getting into the mess that is pigment mixing or the myth of primary colours, which are mostly only problems in traditional art) where our perception of a colour is altered by its surroundings and brightness. Cool light and warm shadows will create the impression of a blue (or bluish) light source, and is typical of indirect outdoor lighting on a clear day for instance (because of the sky). That extends to a weird effect outdoors where things that are under direct sunlight are untinted or yellow (depending on time of day), things in partial shade (like under a tree) are tinted blue, and things in shadow that is close to the shadow-caster are reddisb-tinted (actually untinted, but tend to look warm from contrast with surrounding partial shade). But we also tend to perceive warmer colours as "lit" and colder as "unlit" anyway, so doing the opposite, with warm shadows and cold highlights (as in many of the works of johannes vermeer for example) it can create a mood that is either more stark and clinical or more calm, melancholy and "distant." Perception of colour is affected by surrounding colours as well, an adaptation in our brains to compensate for things like bloom (light scattering in the lens of our eye, so colours bleed), indirect lighting (what the first reply talked about) and transparent materials (like water). It's the reason for "the dress" phenomenon, where most people saw a dress (that was eventually confirmed to be blue and black) as white and yellow because of the apparent lighting in an overexposed photo. For that reason, tones that are normally warm, like skin, may be almost grey or even cold (but warm compared to their settings) underwater or in a bluer scene (again, look at vermeer's coldly-lit paintings of women with skin rendered almost porcelain white), or conversely can pop a LOT just by using a normal tone. For a "stranger" example if you want to render someone with light skin in an environment with a lot of green but give it a more dreamy mood by using muted colours, you might use a pastel green for their surroundings and tint their skin slightly magenta to contrast those surroundings- or vice versa, tinting them green or teal in a fuchsia environment. That gives the impression that the surrounding light is also muted but that the surroundings are still very green. If you use a colour picker on a lot of nice looking art you'll fond parts of the skin are blue or green a surprising amount of the time. On the topic of working with or even turning to our advantage effects caused by our flawed physiology, this is also how you can make paintings- even using traditional, subtractive pigments- that appear to "glow." If you simulate enough lens flare convingly enough many people will even squint instinctively since their brain interprets the signals it is receiving as the lens of the eye flaring in a very bright light. Another component of how this glow is achieved is basically what is called in photography or computer graphics "high dynamic range," or making everything a little darker by an amount proportional to how light it is to begin with to make the parts that are as light as possible look even brighter. If things like the sky are darker than we expect, it will make things like backlit leaves that are brighter than we expect actually look like they're backlit (or "glowing"). Lastly, since you mention skin specifically, for materiald that are translucent (meaning you can't see through them but some light gets through), light will scatter and be tinted with the internal colour of the object as well as scattering colour (eg the sky is blue during the day and golden at sunset because as the light scatters more in the atmosphere it gets redshifted). The subject you'll most often see this on is human flesh and skin, and it means shadows will look warmer and lighter since the skin is re-emitting light that has passed through or bounced off of blood, and the edges of shadows will be softer.

@jamssy34093 жыл бұрын
Depends on your art style.
@kamikazeeeeee1033 жыл бұрын
There's no correct answer, and it depends on how much textures/shading you put in a painting. Line art fits basic art styles that usually has 1-3 colour pallette on each part. Removing lines would make arts like these; look like Vector. And finally, lines would ruin the textile immersion of an in-depth painting, which is why experienced artists usually don't bother with it.

I know this video is like 3 years old but- This is so helpful. Like actually. I realized that I was making hard-edge lines instead of 'shapes' and my shading is absolute crap in those pieces, I now know that I actually need to paint and render, and sort of not worry about the lines too much, because the values define the form. Thank you so much!

Thank you SO MUCH for this!! I've been trying for years to figure out how to go from physical media to digital painting. I primarily draw and work with pencils and watercolor pencils, so transitioning to digital never made a lot of sense to me. Then of course every tutorial I've found has either been so basic it's simply introducing basic tools, or so advanced that they're showing different techniques without explaining how the brushes are actually working. This is the first tutorial I've found that actually breaks things down and explains just how digital painting works, and it's finally clicked. I was about ready to just give up, so once again, thank you for this!

Thank you for this, whenever I search digital art tips for beginners none of them talk about brushes which I think is a big factor on painting digitally. Will watch your painting like a sculptor video! I just got my first drawing tablet and I'm so excited for digital painting! Thank you, I don't think you know how much this helps people haha.

I'm by no means a beginner artist. I've been doing pencil sketches and vector art for a couple of years now. I recently got into digital painting, because it felt like I hit the ceiling in terms of colouring in vector art. Currently studying materials to get a better understanding of texture and light interaction. There's so much more to learn! This video dropped a few incredibly helpful tips on painting. Thank you so much!

ive been drawing/painting digitally for over 10 years as a hobby, and am recently having to relearn some basics from a combination of burnout and neurodivergent skill decay 😭this is a really great video and a good reminder to keep going back to the absolute basics in terms of tools. my favourite brushes are a pair of triangle and tilted oval brushes w/ a high pressure threshold for blending, so i dont have to switch between brushes while blocking in and rendering colour- both which i made myself! they're my treasures and good for literally everything. (also as a boob-haver, the boobs look fine 🤣it honestly just looks like shes wearing a very structured bra while being in a stylized kind of mid-action pose. i like her a lot!)

I am using Sai but this still helps a lot!! The most struggle I have is blending I would say. I don't think I have the best understanding of it yet. I ended up with the drawing looks way too smudgy when I try to blend the colors with brush (most of my brushes won't even have it own color? It will just take color from the current layer which also means I can't put in new colors.) If anyone have any advice I very much appreciate it!!
@comediancircus5 жыл бұрын
I usually block in colours and then use a blending brush to blend the edges where I need to. The brush I use for blending is set to the following settings in Sai (long description ahead): Min Size - 35 Density - 90 Blending - 100 Dilution - 100 Persistence - 48 Keep Opacity box is ticked Advanced setting box is ticked as well Quality is set to 1 (Fastest) Edge Hardness and min density is set to 0 Max dens prs. is set to 100% Hard Soft is set to 100 Dens size and blend boxes are all ticked. The brush I use for blocking in colour is the Sketch Brush by meteorcrash on deviantart. However, how brushes come out always depends on your drawing tablet's settings so they might have to be adjusted to fit your needs. Hope it still is a good starting point! Let me know if you have any questions!

Illustrating pays my bills and I watched this during lunch break. I use traditional mediums as watercolor and wanted to switch to digital art for a certain project. I was shoked how aweful my pieces turned out when working digitally. After however following the advide of using hard edge, presure sensitive squared brushes high scaled, everything looked soooo much better. Thank you for sharing this immensly usefull advice that prevented me from poverty.

The brush you used in the skull and girl paintings looked softer than I expected for a hard round with opacity control. Did you have flow jitter turned on?
@brendon2056 жыл бұрын
That's the power of blending
@mrsnoop18205 жыл бұрын
yes he did
@YenoWorld6 жыл бұрын
I dont think that is the default hard round, it seems to get softer as you lighten pen pressure which makes it easier to blend! Normal hard round makes these disgusting harsh transitions in the blending which is why no one uses it. Shouldve prob showed the settings but good video!
@dleejnewsome68936 жыл бұрын
Hard round for me, with opacity jitter set to pen pressure, causes brush overlap (one brush stroke set down, second brush stroke over the first causes a much darker area where the two intersect, and it builds up). This is the main reason I hate using hard brushes in photoshop, no matter which settings I use for the hard round, there is no way I can get the same effect as in the video, as soon as I pickup my pen and set it back down, everything beneath it gets darker and shows the strokes
@sinixdesign6 жыл бұрын
I actually opened photoshop to double check, haha. It is the default hard round, it definitely stays as a hard edge when you press lightly. There's other tricks to good blending that are more advanced, such as stroke economy and knowing the proper directions. I'll do a more in depth video on that at a later point, because it is an important aspect of making your blending look smooth.
@suikrada32976 жыл бұрын
What did you do at 5;34? When you started to shade that cheek you made 4 overlaped ugly strokes, the one I always have using hard round brush. Then you went back, and some magic happened because all of sudden you had no more marks but wonderful gradients and edges?
@yoshistover58816 жыл бұрын
Actually this is the exact problem I had years back and the reason I switched over to clipstudio. Because while clipstudio has opacity they have a far superior blending engine[?] I think similar to like Corel Painter. I watched how Mat Cor [ctrl paint creator] did the same kind of beautiful painting but I could never manage to get the opacity thing to work without leaving randomly really dark marks everywhere lol
@YenoWorld6 жыл бұрын
Minliv probably a mixer brush just for smoothing. Its extremely powerful for blending anything. Set that to a easy hot key like C and you have an instant blender that comes off as beautifully realistic. Ahmed aldoori has a video on it. Its called how to blend colors

4 years old video but still holds up perfectly, "see the world in shapes instead of lines" is an advice i'll put on a sticky note next to my monitor (literally), i got back in didgital painting recently and ive been using krita for 2 days now and spent quite a lot of time trying to see which brush should i use and all that ... well now i selected 2/3 brushes and it makes everything "easier" less is more after all

Moemie Art if you know how to blend in some software, you should know in any... what I mean by this is you might just not be familiar with the program, so keep going. on the other hand, you might use too many shortcuts, in which case practicing on PS from scratch might help you build a better foundation. ...or maybe I'm completely wrong, but this is how I feel it should work.

FOR BLENDING. Use a mask of the silhouette and the smudge tool. Increase the scattering to 30-60% and reduce the the strength to 10%. Experiment with the strength of what you want. Sometimes i increase it, if i want to drag out a colour (for example clouds). Also you can change the brush to have more texture but remember to increase the scatter again. HAPPY BLENDING. also don't use a large brush or it will crash your photoshop
@tacticslc48056 жыл бұрын
You just take the airbrush press lightly between the two colors you want to blend alt click and again and again until it's smooth. Experience will only get this process faster. It's not that hard. Try making rainbows of black and white or any other colors for 5 min and you'll probably understand lol.
