One of the greatest sermons ever preached. Still powerful today. We need hell fire preaching today, preaching which puts the fear of God in the hearts of men.
@doctorforce10 жыл бұрын
When I first read this as a teen in high school I had ZERO knowledge of God. I grew up in an almost entirely secular environment and even the word sin was foreign to me. I was no more aware of being sinful then a fish is aware of the water it swam in. Nevertheless, I did feel the Spirit of God drawing me even though I did not understand the incredible message Jonathan Edwards, one of the most learned and anointed ministers I've ever been privileged to read, wrote back in the 19th Century. He and several others, played a major role in the Great Awakening that happened back then that completely changed the spiritual complexion of our nation for a very long time. The world hears or reads this and snuffs it off and puts this inspired message in the bin of stereotypes that they would cast him in. He was an incredible godly man who walked the walk as well as talked the talk. This sermon is not for the feint of heart. If you don't know Jesus or never knew Him, the sermon will seem like so much mumbo jumbo as it did to me so many years ago. Still, if you have a desire to know God, you also need to know Him in all His aspects. He is the King of all there is. The Judge of the whole world. This sermon expounds one of the less popular aspects of His character that few preachers touch on any more these days. Listen and allow the Holy Spirit convict you as He had me so long ago and bring a change to your heart that leads to everlasting life.

Richard Szczepanski Im in high school (about to go into the 11th grade), and we are no longer required to read this in our English classes( at least in North Carolina). I would to God that we were. Ive been saved for five years and I just read through this sermon, and I was convicted, and I think if only some of the kids in my school would hear this they would get Saved. I wish that preachers would still preach like this, instead of these feel-good motivational talks, that in no way glorify Gods true love, mercy, grace, nor His wrath. I long to see preachers preaching the Word of God again. All glory be to Christ Jesus my Lord both now and forever.

@debizahn52483 жыл бұрын
A pastor should never preach "just to see" his congregation's faces. He should preach because God has placed that Word onto his heart and compelled him to preach it. I think your comment, even if said in jest, shows the lack of love and mercy that the world often condemns us for. We are called to do justly AND love mercy, while walking humbly with our God. By the way, I love this sermon and believe in the power of the Scriptures and the importance of the fear of God. I just don't believe that your comment, and what I perceive as the spirit behind it, is honoring to God.

I remember listening to this last year as a backslidder returning to the Lord. I had just repented and still repenting when I listened to this. It was a terrible night. The depth of my sin and mankind's sin hit me as never before. I turned in my bed and wept deeply for myself and everyone I had sinned with with great mourning and sorrow. I felt like I was in hell, I was terrified and grieved for my sin. I had godly sorrow that brings repentance and still do. It was a terrible night but one that showed me how wicked man is and how holy God is, something I'd never heard in the modern sloppy grace preaching. Until we understand how depraved we are and how holy and terrible God is, we shall never truly repent or live holy. That night, and since then, I have had a holy fear of God. God hates sin. This present generation needs to listen to these classics in these days of shortage of the true gospel

We do the lost a disservice when we preach only that God love's them. They must also know the danger that they are in every day of their lives living without God. People wept when they heard this sermon because the Holy Spirit convicted them. How much more time is left for this to happen again we do not know, but the hardness of hearts in todays modern world suggest a terrible ending for many today.
