Templeton Rye….great rye whisky made in Templeton, Iowa and reputed to be Al Capone’s favorite. Incidentally, Capone’s older brother was a sheriff on the Winnebago and Omaha Indian reservations just across the river and south of Sioux City in Nebraska. There is a house with a secret hidden apartment on the north side of Sioux City, where Capone would clandestinely meet with his older brother, who lived and died in Homer, Nebraska just south of Sioux City under the name “Richard “Two Gun” Hart. There’s a fantastic book about his story.

I was a truck driver and the cleanest state with the nicest people was Iowa. I would move there in a minute except for the winter, worked 3 hours once unloading in minus 8 degrees. Ouch!
@janellek2111 ай бұрын
I agree. Iowa impressed the hell out of me when I went there several years ago for the State Fair (went to Des Moines, Ames and Winterset). It's clean, the people are friendly, it was more diverse than I expected, and it seems very safe and community-oriented. The only thing that would keep me from moving there is the lack of a sizable Jewish community.

It can get the worst of the heat also one time for three straight days it was 105 with 95% humidity made a heat index of 140. I went home after work had a cold shower and my skin wouldn’t even tingle. Anyway I moved away because of the winters never knowing how cold or how long it would be.

I was born in Sioux City. My dad was too. Both sets if grandparents lived there. We spent part of summers there on Jones street and military road. Sioux City reminds me of Carl Sandburg’s poetry. When my dad got out of Highschool he went to work in the stock yards. Some of the workers would get drunk and go after each other with these huge meat hooks used to move carcasses. After that, he decided to go to college! I have many wonderful memories of Sioux City. I revere it’s history. My grampa would tie a rope around my brother and he would jump in the Missouri River to swim. Crazy.

I spent a summer (1969) working at the stock yards and found the people of Sioux City to be interesting people. Sioux City seemed to be part of the cowboy west, especially the stock yard area. Great memories of that summer.

Nebraska's prettiest parts are along the Niobrara to Valentine along the S Dakota border. It's very desolate though. (I highly recommend the Niobrara State Park cabins on the river side. Very pretty and the cabins are incredibly cool. The beds themselves however are hard and suck.)
@sallycapotosto692718 күн бұрын
Actually, it was known as Little Chicago because of the stockyards. Sioux City was a huge stock town where the ranchers from all three states brought their cattle to be auctioned, slaughtered and packed. It had cut back a bit when I grew up in the '70s from it's hay day in the '30s-'40s but I will NEVER forget the smell of that city as you drove in on Highway 75. Good lord it smelled! But those stockyards are what made the city.

My husband and i stayed at a hotel here to visit my best friend in 2017 who had moved to Iowa. We stayed at Hard Rock hotel. We also got a suite. It had a king size bed bedroom area, a wall that blocked off the bedroom area to a living room area, then it had a big bathroom area with a gaint walk in shower and spa bath tub. It was like 400$ a night lol but it was only for 2 nights though. Worth it though. We didnt really explore downtown. We took an uber to the mall then my friends and i got some alchohol and hung out in the hotel room. They werent old enough for the casino. One of my friends was like a month away from turning 21.

Hey, I was just standing on the edge of the Missouri River a couple of days ago myself. But I was a couple of hundred miles downstream in Washington MO. I'm currently overlooking the Ohio River from my hotel room in Evansville IN...I don't remember if you've been , but knowing your affinity for governmental buildings with great architecture, the Old County Courthouse here is magnificent. If I remember my Lewis & Clark history, Sgt Floyd was the only member of the party who died on the expedition. Pretty amazing considering the perils they faced on the journey. Oh, by the way, if you're a connoisseur of Onion Rings, you have to try the Red Box Car in Red Lodge Montana--the rings there are strong contenders for the best I've ever had. Happy trails!

Sioux City was the site of the plane crash of United Flight 232 on 7/19/1989. The city’s emergency management was very prepared as the head of that department was always having disaster drills.

I’ll never forget that crash. A couple of years later we were traveling through Sioux City on a Saturday when the alternator on our little Mercedes 240D froze up. We got the car towed to a small repair shop that happened to be open and knew how to work on Mercedes. There were pictures of the crash all over the walls of the shop waiting room. It turns out that the shop owner’s son was head of emergency services in Sioux City. I won’t say his name here but I bet there are a lot of viewers who know the shop and gentleman I’m speaking of. He may no longer be with us. I went to college in Sioux City. The best pizza in the world was from Morningside Pizza. Other great eateries were the Palmer House and Green Gables. I worked various summer jobs including night shift at the Zenith TV factory and being a landscape gardener with a friend who went on to become a Iowa Supreme Court Justice. Unfortunately my friend passed away from Melanoma a couple of years ago now. This video reminded me of him and the great times we had together. That was almost fifty years ago now when downtown was still pretty vibrant. There were basically only three highways going through town. I-29 angling northwest into South Dakota, US 75 which ran right through the middle of the Floyd Golf Course near the Sgt Floyd Monument and US 20 east and west which was still mostly a two lane highway. The stock yards and Swift packing plant was still active. You could smell them both depending on the wind. No interstate bypass around the city. No mega shopping malls. I think Ozark was the only airline flying into Sioux City. The Air National Guard was still flying F-100 Super Sabre fighters. Except for labor unrest during the Connie Bodine era at IBP it was a slower, quieter time.

@@davewinter2688 That was my Grandpa's shop. Yes he has passed on after a battle with cancer. Unfortunately the shop shut down when he retired. There just was not anyone to take over. (Personal regret of mine as I interned with him for a summer in high school, I went the Army route instead though.). Lots of great memories of him and the shop live on in the community, family and friends. There was a movie made about the crash too, Crash Landing: The Rescue of Flight 232. My uncle was played by Richard Thomas from the Waltons.

When I wrote it I could remember your grandfather's name but at the moment my 70 old brain ain't what it used to be. I'll wake up and remember it in the middle of the night. I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your grandfather. My grandfather's, both who would be over 125 years old now, were very important in my life. If I'm figuring correctly your uncle (the head of emergency services) would be your mom or dad's brother. Thanks for replying.
