Many people consider this song the worst of their career just because it sounds too sweet or soft, and many people have nailed in their minds the idea that S&TB are a goth band. But they are more than that. They have drowned in many different genres and topics throughout their career. They covered the whole human emotional spectrum. This song is about self-esteem and she's singing words that she tries to believe are for herself, as she reflects on how we depend on others to feel good about ourselves. That's represented on the beauty contest. She gets convinced that she needs of other's opinion to feel good about herself, just like the other little girls, but soon she realizes that's all bullshit and starts to throw away the makeup and clothes. They are more than 'Spellbound', People!

I truly don't give a shit about the "goth" label, but all that nice feelgood chatter about "self-esteem" has very little bearing on how bland this song sounds.

I don't get it, SATB have like 3 "goth albums" aesthetic wise, the rest? Not really, like, since Hyaena they wasn't as dark as before and this is just a result of a years long evolution the band had. I don't know if ppl think The Rapture came a year after Juju or wtf 😂
@CineResenhas2 жыл бұрын
@@MalMotorDedo you are so right! Siouxie and the Banshees never was a goth band, as the dumb fans always like to say out loud. I even read an interview that Siouxie Sioux always liked to think about herself as a pop artist.

Unlike most Siouxsie fan's, I actually first got to know them threw this album. I was a music lover, in high school, but the furthest I'd gone into post-punk/goth was one Cure album. I didn't have anything to compare it to, so I listened to it with virgin ears and thought that this album was amazing. Thus started a long journey back further and further into their catalogue loving more and more as I went along. This song brings back great memories.

AHA! I see now and understand that sequence at the end when a young girl runs off down a coridoor which then cuts to Siouxsie in a tiara doing the same. @BSBSDerivative3 жыл бұрын
@@punkpoetry for a name like punk poetry you seem to be missing the pretty dark symbolism behind this song with the video it has a radio-friendly beat sure, but the lyrics combined with the footage of the girls and child pageants is clearly a comment on how sexualising childhood is kind of normalized through institutions like pageants hence the repetition of the word Baby to refer to a literal young person as well as its romantic/sexual connotation
@Ignatius19723 жыл бұрын
@@punkpoetry there are few really good songs on this record, like the title track and the single "Stargazer". The rest is OK and honest in a good art pop album but it's just so like nothing for Siouxsie and Co. It was time to stop and it was exactly what they did. It's not bad, not at all, but it's generic.
