I love Sir Franks flippant ‘well nothing for me to worry about’ with the smirk on his face. One of my favourite scenes. You can just see Sir Humphrey squirming.

Peter Cellier as Sir Frank is brilliant casting. Love his Sir Frank character who is as verbally able as Sir Humphrey. Cellier has that look and sound that just oozes arrogance and self-confidence required for the character. He is my Peter O'Toole of British actors.

Margaret Thatcher was a fan of this show. In an interview a few years after she left office, she said that many of those in cabinet at the time speculated that the scriptwriters may of had a mole in Downing Street due to the dialogue which sounded uncannily familiar.
@JamesMoore-i9u10 ай бұрын
The scriptwriters did actually spend time observing in government whilst she was in office. John Hoskyns references this in his book, Just in Time.

I could have sworn he was talking about certain individual and essentially anomalous responsibilities which are not, logically speaking, consonant or harmonious with the broad spectrum of intermeshing and inseparable functions, and could indeed be said to place an excessive and supererogatory burden on the office when considered in relation to the comparatively exiguous advantages of their overall centralization.

Dorothy was easily one of the best characters in Yes Prime Minister. Just perfect casting...
@Pythagoras_was_right3 жыл бұрын
I wish she was on every episode. Though I think that might make the show too demanding? Meaning, the men always show a bit of comedy in their voice and expression. But Dorothy plays it totally straight - she could be real. Which is funnier. but it requires viewers to pay more attention, which is hard when relaxing in front of the TV and trying to unwind.

Smart, confident, direct, with a subtly cutting sense of humor. A sterling example of a strong woman character who feels no need to show off in order to prove it.

The double speak from Sir Frank and Sir Humphrey reminds me of when Flanders met his Canadian counterpart.

It'd be a master stroke if Jim could play the 1 if them off against each other to give up other responsibilities with the implication that it would lead to them getting the job since they now have 'less on their plate' and then put Bernard 8n charge of both of them

Both the yes minister and prime minister BBC TV political comedy series were the best ever produced.I watched both back in the eighties as a teenager the acting script writing was brilliant it showed the machinations of government brilliantly and its still relevant today,sadly I doubt the BBC have the talent they used to have so I don't see them producing anything as good today.

Its Machiavellian brilliant to see that as soon as they get a whiff of advancement or demotion, that both Humphrey and Frank haver the knifes out and doing their level best to preserve their position or nick their colleagues. Climbing the greasy pole as it were.

On a serious note; the current civil service is awash with “staff” who hate their job, such to the extent that people are shocked when they d o receive adequate assistance from English-speaking staff who are well versed in their role.
@AsbestosMuffins10 ай бұрын
it does remind you that much of the british government involves making it up as you go along. the US government has a much more rigid appointment system
@Gleifel10 ай бұрын
Well there are certain departments which are effectively permanent with corresponding permanent roles such as ministerial ones (e.g. Home Office, Foreign and Commonwealth Office). But yeah there are also a bunch of made up things like idk “levelling up” secretary or minister for “brexit opportunities”.
@justonecornetto8010 ай бұрын
Nearly all of the British cabinet are elected officials unlike the US where they are nominated by the president. You also have to consider the fact that anyone who serves in the Cabinet, Home or Foreign Offices at a senior level are strictly vetted by MI5 and if the slightest thing of a compromising nature is found, a parliamentary select committee of elected MPs can block the appointment.
@ilcorvo955910 ай бұрын
The American system is far more politicised - though the tories are trying to push it that way.
@fd89349 ай бұрын
Wrong, it's only compromising if NOTHING is found, they love having ministers with skeletons because it allows them to remain in control lol
