Humans are animals once you get past all the fancy façade we call 'social ettiquette'. we hunt. we kill. we have our instincts and primal base needs, we just give it fancy names to pretend we are better. we say we are better because we can love but so can animals some animals are completely monogamous, they mate for life and if their mate dies then they live alone and mourn, unlike humans who sometimes move on. compassion- there are cases of animals adopting the young of others of a completely different species. If that is not compassion then what is it?

I find it funny that a lot of people think that the only reason Ben is drawn to Ryn is because of her song when the narrative clearly implies is more than that. The song affects him greatly? A big fat yes but it does not control him (at least, not yet). Some people here pointed out that Ryn and Maddie scenes have more chemistry and that Ryn kissed Maddie first, well I agree to disagree. You all remember that Ryn tried to kiss Ben first but Ben even though he was already sirened was able to stop her. Evidence number 1 that Ryn's song doesn't control him. It is addictive but he tries to fight it. Another evidence of that is Ben's trying to use his reason instead of his feelings. That's why he told Maddie the truth and involves her in everything, why he wanted to "study" Ryn and that's why after watching what Donna and the others did he put them back in the animal category which hurts Ryn deeply. Everything Ryn did in this episode was to prove to Ben and herself she is not an animal. The writing here is really good because they are giving us Ben vs Decker, both scientists, both sirened and then Ryn vs Donna, both sang to those previous males but the outcome is completely different leading Donna to embrace her animal instincts and Ryn to embrace her human side. Since the beginning I felt Ryn and Ben are going to be like those star crossed lovers. Both of their lives are going to be destroyed because of their connection and yet it is going to be beautiful; dark, but beautiful. The chemistry between the two overflows with just one look. That's why we have more scenes with Ryn and Maddie instead of Ryn and Ben, you know, just the two of them. I also think that Ben is putting some distance between him and Ryn on purpose, because he may be under the impression that his attraction to her is all because of the song, so it is safer to always have Maddie with them. Another evidence that Ben somehow is trying to fight whatever voodoo Ryn's song did to him. And if you're thinking I prefer them over Raddie because of some stupid "idea", just let it go. The narrative is what I follow. And for those surprised by the whole Xander and Maddie thing, I wasn't. My reaction was "I knew it". Xander left us some tiny little clues here and there but I didn't think they had a past, I just thought Xander was secretly in love with Maddie.

I totally agree...the only reason some people are insisting on Ryn and Maddi is because most of those people are Determined to see another lesbian ship on this show...but like you, I noticed how Ryn had developed a much closer relationship to Ben than Maddie....it was so apparent from the time since Ben first met and helped Ryn, and the fact that Ben understand more about Ryn than Maddie (the negative as well as the positive things).

Nina Dimitri I have a theory that the song affects people in different ways or maybe the intentions of the mermaid are what affects the song. Like the first time Ryn sings to Ben she does so to learn connect and understand but we've seen that when Donna does it the effects aren't there (potentially) Donna sings to Decker and he can't stop thinking about her which are simmalar to Ben's while Donna also uses her song to lure and their were seemingly no effects to this because Chris Calvin Xander and his dad all heard Donna sing so the song is very interesting and yes it saddens me to think that all this chemistry between Ben and Ryn is due to some song that's like a drug rather than them actually being in love(even though they still care about each other)

Ben seems to only be 'interested' in her because of her song. Meanwhile, the bond she built with maddie comes from maddie trying to understand her and teach her their ways. She learned to trust because of maddie, I think they're more genuine. But who know, they could possibly end up being all three of them or none of them together at all. And her bond with Ben was built from the moment they first met, and plus, Ben understands more about Ryn than Maddie. Both the negative things about ryn too. For example, Maddie was Never attacked by Ryn in her Siren state, and the one time she was, Maddie was afraid and acting all tip-toey around Ryn that whole day (re-watch episode 3). Which is why Ryn told Maddie in that hotel room that night "you are afraid, of me". Maddie also didn't get to see how vicious Ryn's people are too...like ben did last episode during the attack on the ship. Thus, I'm a little skeptic of Maddie and how she would treat Ryn if she Actually Got to See Those things for her Very Own eyes, instead of having Ben tell her stuff...would Maddie really be so nice around Ryn if she got in the water with Ryn and Ryn came at her and attacked her the way Ryn did Ben? Don't think so. Maddie has Mostly only experience the good side of Ryn, not the violent side too like Ben has. But Ben has literally Experienced all those things from both Ryn and her people! And he Still likes her (even though he did waver this episode and was half-scared of Ryn, which is why he referred to Ryn as)....and this scene of his heart-felt apology to Ryn shows how deep their bond is. So yeah, Ben Is More emotionally connected to Ryn, because he knows ALL of her (the vicious predator and human side) not just the Nice human side of Ryn that Maddie has seen and experienced.

Unpopular opinion, clearly, but I think that Maddie and Ryn's interactions have much better chemistry and are more genuine. Ryn's chemistry with Ben only strikes me when he seems obsessed with her song; but that's not something that would work long-time for the characters.

That's assuming and believing that Ryn's song is just some simple obession, and not the magical bond that is...there's a reason why Ben asks Ryn to sing to him Just after he apologizes to her...and the way they got close to each and almost kissed? lol Nope..Ben and Ryn is more cannon, and they are more believable too, as Ben knows more about Ryn and her kind, and he was the first to meet her and help her too. Maddie came along later.

I share your opinion. Ik see more depth in the chemistry between Ryn and Maddie. Essspecially due to all the explaining scenes. Maddie explained stuff to Ryn the most and is intriqued by her without the siren song. Ben was the first to meet and help her yes, but his intrigue seems to be more due to the siren song. Maddie also was the one who did not lose faith in Ryn once she started trusting her. Also with the whole tracker thing. However, this is a series so chances are high the creators let Ben and Ryn end up together for the sake of stereotyping.. I actuslly wish neither end up romantically envolved with Ryn, just the very beautiful and special and deep and transending bond they have now. To not create yet another more preditable endship. Just my opinion. I love this show on its own

Oh my...you conveniently forgot lx09 in which Maddie was freaking out over her father being hurt was ready to bring the whole police department down to catch All the mermaids (Ryn included) and that it was actually Ben who kept trying to stop her and tell her Not to do that, that Ryn was their friend!
