Love these guys since the beginning. I started my writing career listening to album, King. Internet told me they were art college students who played on the side and decided to form a band. Creativity is amazing...still. I went on to be a motorsport journalist, biographer and now working on screenplays. CREATE people, its why God created us, to keep on creating. :-)

Love Belly. The fact that this song still fing rocks so many years after it was released, just proves how amazingly talented this band is.

One of my favorite albums, and this video is just awesome. Sad that they go shunned from radio in the '90s, play this album now and they would dominate the airwaves and blow any new band away. I hope there are some talented kids that paid attention to Belly and can bring back even a fraction of that sound and talent to music today. I miss Belly, super-connected fan for life!

I entirely agree... & I'm not anti-Liz Phair, to be clear... I bought Exile in Guyville & Whip-Smart on disc back in the day... now the only song from those albums I ever really got into was "Flower" (& I don't THINK it was for pervy reasons), but I'm not dismissive of her as an artist. I've more recently come to like "Extraordinary" and "Rock Me" via YT... hmm, maybe those are too poppy for your tastes, but we've established that you're not going to condemn me even if they are... : - )

Love this song, love Belly, and I especially love Tanya - beautiful, sexy, and talented! I love her voice. She can sing me a song anytime she wants. I've got all of their stuff and wish there was more, and this is coming from a post-flower child/prog rocker (if that's a valid description). I still listen to their stuff and miss her dearly.

I saw them twice at the state Theater in detriot, I got dropped on my butt right in front of Tanya Donnelley. I had tickets to see her in her name sake band but got to detriot and had the wrong credit card for the hotel. They have the energy and fun I need. There were over 120 crowd surfers at that last one. My friend had a lighter and lite it and Tanya announced "This one is for the boy with the biggest Flame". He had turned his lighter up all the way before the show. It was the greatest.

I think some people, perhaps incl. the "Garbage is overproduced" person, think of musical tastes as a proxy for intelligence or achievement. It's important not only to like certain artists, but to like them BEFORE the uncool people like them. (And thus all of the smug "My own sublime taste brought me here, not that damned video game/TV show/movie where all of you uncultured trogolodytes learned about this tasty little ear gem long after I did" KZbin comments that I read all the time.)

Tanya Donelly, Liz Phair, Tori Amos etc. put today's female artists like Lady Gaga and Britney Spears to shame. They showcased their talents instead of their sex to rock people's worlds. Excellent band; 90's alt rocked! Too bad it's over and now we have mind numbing corporate garbage being spewed over the airwaves.

Hey, I'm not even a big Liz Phair fan (although I like a few songs, as well as a few old school Britney songs actually). But I do think image is a factor in why so many people like them. Well, not so much their image as their popularity. I've noticed certain people tend to like whatever is popular and won't give anything else a chance. In the past, I have had shown songs to people, and they'd be like, "this sucks" but then a week later, that same song would be played on the radio and all of a

sudden, it would be their favorite. And then a few months afterwards, when it started losing popularity, they'd be like, "ew i don't like this song. it's so old". You're right though. The same thing goes for the other way around. Certain people like what's unpopular or not even that - what's "indie" - and won't give anything popular a chance. Like your Pearl Jam friend. Hey, you mentioned Garbage - I was once told that I shouldn't listen to Garbage because they were overproduced and that

This band was awesome! Every now and then, something really unique comes along. Then the business turns their back on them to make room for crap like Britney, Bieber and GaGa. I don't know why. Belly was great. Tanya rocked and Gail Greenway was a monster on bass and exciting to watch.

Oh, and I wouldn't expect you to listen to music that you don't enjoy (I certainly don't), as long as you don't wholly close your mind to the music of entire genres or performers because it's not the "right kind" of music or because the "right sort of people" don't listen to it. I'm reminded of a friend back in the day who said with a straight face that she was finding it harder to like the same Pearl Jam songs that she used to like because they had become too popular. Oy.

As for Gaga, while she definitely has a carefully crafted image, I think she played a large part in its creation, & isn't just pliable clay for the label to shape. Anyway, I probably listen to many of the indie groups & singers from the 90's (we called them "alternative" back then) that you do, but I instinctively shy away from tribal snobbery that is overly dismissive of mainstream/"corporate" music and gives excessive praise to anything that's supposedly out of the mainstream/independent.
@773SleepyHollow
@773SleepyHollow 12 жыл бұрын
I was reacting to your assumption that the sole reason anyone would listen to Gaga or Brit is image. I listen to Brit (3 songs) & Gaga (1) for the same reason I listen to Belly, Throwing Muses, Veruca Salt, The Breeders, Garbage, PJ Harvey, Portishead, etc... musical enjoyment. (I'll never get tired of "Toxic." Never.) Also, I was unfairly lumping you in with YT snobbery... I don't listen to Bieber, but neither do the ppl who diss him on YT every day, so they should shut up about the kid.

Well, people tend to the bend rules for people that they like... when 90's-alt-goddess Phair got sexual, perhaps for td79 it was "transgressive" & "challenged the patriarchy with assertively independent female sexuality," while when Gaga Superstar did it, she was "just another bimbo selling her body for money." Hmm... I remember that Phair DID catch hell in '03 for her Britneyesque album. It was almost like when Dylan went electric (not that I was even alive when that happened).

Yeah, you're probably right about Gaga. I don't know much about her, to be honest. Her music just doesn't appeal to me. But her image does seem like it's more so her own creation than her record company's. I honestly don't understand what you're trying to say in your second paragraph though. Are you trying to call me a music snob? Because you're right - I tend not to listen to mainstream stuff, but that doesn't make me a snob. It's just that type of music doesn't appeal to me.

I defend Brit & Gaga on principle, but neither are among my very favorite artists. My favorites incl. Garbage, Bill Withers, First Aid Kit, S Wonder, J Cash, Portishead, Hendrix, Nirvana, Jay-Z, The Beatles, PJ Harvey, Lou Rawls, Smashing Pumpkins, Kayne, Zeppelin, Veruca Salt, J Brown, White Stripes, Cee Lo, The Stones, Tribe ("Rescue Me"), Tribe Called Quest, B Womack, Radiohead, Nas, The Doors, Bjork, D Washington, Green Day, Outkast, Mamas & the Papas, No Doubt, B Holiday, Oasis, Eminem...

Yeah, no, you misunderstood me. Either that or I didn't word myself correctly. First of all, I was basically just trying to word what "tooldude" was trying to say in a different way. But second of all, I don't think their images are the sole reason people listen to them. They're songs might sound good to some people, especially people who prefer upbeat kinds of music that you can actually dance to. And that's okay, everyone has different tastes. Not everyone is going to like Liz Phair...

just made me laugh. Why should I take what they say to heart? I'll listen to what I want. How could you not expect a band mostly made up of music producers not to have a lot of production in their songs anyway?

My comment wasn't even really my own opinion. I was just rephrasing what I thought "tooldude79" was trying to say. Because I can't understand how else he could criticize Lady Gaga for being sexual while prasiing Liz Phair considering Liz Phair's lyrics are probably even more sexual than her's.

Liz Phair is very, very sexual - maybe even more so than Gaga. I think what this guy is trying to say, however, isn't that Gaga and Britney Spears isn't that it's bad that they're sexual (some conservatives might say so) but that they aren't famous because of their talent at all, but for their corporate-created image (which is mostly about sex). I could be wrong though.

You're making certain unwarranted assumptions about Gaga and Spears... I gather they're not to your taste, so you're chalking up all of their success to image. Look, there are plenty of young women who are as sexually appealing as those two (which isn't to say that I think they lack sex appeal)... if it were so easy to create a superstar, the labels would do it every week. As for Phair, part of her success comes from image too... she's not a strong singer, nor is she a musical standout.
@773SleepyHollow
@773SleepyHollow 12 жыл бұрын
Phair's voice is probably on par with Brit's, & weaker than Gaga's... I happen to like several Phair songs, but I see no reason to elevate her to an exalted indie pantheon far above the lowly corporate stars like Spears & Gaga. As for Spears, I've always found "Baby," "Oops..." & ESPECIALLY "Toxic" compulsively listenable. & I'm a big fan of Gaga's "Bad Romance." Spears esp. is not one of the great talents of the age, but people haven't listened to her all these years just because of image.
