Gimmicks. Adored by their users and reviled by their opponents; these special traits are some of the most contested designs in all of Super Smash Bros Ultimate. While many Smashers believe these take away from the depth of the game by shifting focus away from traditional neutral, these passive abilities often do exactly the opposite. The extra depth added by these traits not only gives the game more nuance, they help to bring a little bit of the rest of the gaming world into Smash.
But! Not ever passive is created equally, some are massive boons while others are mostly liabilities. Join me as I break down the best and the worst gimmicks in the game, and thanks for watching :]

The funniest thing is that if you combined the Aura and Pichu's self damage you would make both mechanics better as by whiffing moves you could build aura and rage. It would lean into the high risk high reward playstyle but in a way to make sure that you get to the percentages that you want to so that you could leverage aura.
@byronlopez3422
@byronlopez3422 3 жыл бұрын
Look up SSF2's Pichu, he is exactly that. After passing 50% his up b becomes an absurdly powerful kill move, his side b is always fully charged, his down b becomes a recovery option and his t-jolts stun the oponnent. Is very frightening to say the least, even one of his taunts gives him damage so you can get to 50% faster

I like how more and more characters have gimmicks from their home series, even if it's not technically a passive. For example, Kirby's Inhale makes his character so much deeper than without it. A well timed Inhale can completely change the tide of the game or fix holes in Kirby's moveset. Shulk's Monado brings him to six slightly different playstyles for different situations. These go a long way towards making these characters deep.

Passive Abilities are honestly really interesting. Spanning back to Smash 64 with Tether Grabs and Jigglypuff's shield, it has expanded with each game. Despite the sheer array of these abilities, there's still a ton of fighters that don't have any and can be more easily picked up. Even Pichu, despite having the only passive that is purely detrimental, he's very viable and also a fun character. Aura provides an interesting risk-reward mechanic where sandbagging can be a legitimate option, but not one that's strictly in his favour. Lucario has to choose whether to take a blow and be easier to kill in exchange for power or stay safe without the power increase. Steve can still do nasty stuff with his Mining and Crafting abilities. Bowser and K. Rool can still escape what would be dangerous combos with armour. Marth's tipper can take stocks in a nanosecond if used correctly while Roy's own tipper is easy to land as long as you can get into your opponent's face. The shotos and Terry still suffer from mediocre recoveries despite their strengths and aren't exactly Sonic in terms of speed. Float opens up many possibilities but proves to be a very hard mechanic to master and one that can't save your rear every time. All of these mechanics and more are quite balanced and make Smash Ultimate such a unique and fun fighting game. Whether your mechanic makes you tough as nails, agile as a butterfly or as weak as a baby egg, your skill is what makes or breaks a match. Great job on the video lad. What's your favourite passive mechanic \ ability?

Being able to manage limited resources well doesn't take away from the fact that having limited resources in the first place is a pretty huge disadvantage.
@LazyNinja421
@LazyNinja421 3 жыл бұрын
@@notalive5479 true to an extent, but the resources themselves usually are pretty powerful to compensate. with the exception of robin where it's nearly impossible to actually manage his durability without just wasting spells most resource based characters don't generally struggle with it. Take hero for example, as long as you aren't just spamming neutral or side b, and making sure to get a few nair and fairs in you will almost always have enough Mana to cast any spell. Yes I agree if you run out you're at a disadvantage, but overall it's just a different playstyle so on its own I wouldn't consider resource based characters (with the exception of robin again since he has no real way to replenish it) at a disadvantage. You're free to disagree as this is just my own thoughts, but yeah to me it's not a big deal.
@notalive5479
@notalive5479 3 жыл бұрын
@@LazyNinja421 While the moves that are connected to limited resources are usually pretty powerful, they aren't the gimmick, limited resources are. If Hero didn't have mana and could use his options freely, he would just have really strong moves. If Robin didn't have item durability, he would just have really strong moves. If Steve didn't have limited blocks, he would just have really strong moves and free block creation (which is a gimmick, but a different one). Basically, the moves these resources are connected to are NOT the gimmick themselves, rather they are bogged down by a gimmick designed exclusively to make these moves worse. If any other characters were randomly given resource management without other changes, they would be invariably a worse character. As opposed to aura or float, where the character blessed with it will be invariably better. Anyway, that's the way I see it. Whether or not a character is designed with resources in mind doesn't matter, just that the character is definitively worse when connected to them, which makes limited resources a liability.
@LazyNinja421
@LazyNinja421 3 жыл бұрын
@@notalive5479 that's a perfectly valid way of looking at it, and it makes sense if you take it from that perspective yes. To me though it's a balancing mechanism, just as much as cloud limit break having a timer now, or wario waft or even splatoon ink tank (which is a resource in of itself). I agree that resources limit move use, but let's be real as well, do you want a hero who can freely spam all his spells? Or a Steve who can literally stay off the stage forever? Is it a gimmick? Sure, but they are designed to be a balancing force and also most of the time as true to source material as possible while staying within the feel of smash.
@LazyNinja421
@LazyNinja421 3 жыл бұрын
Could they just change it so the moves are weaker but more spammable and therefore wouldn't need a resource? Maybe, but at least to me the resources management aspect provides a different type of gameplay which is always good. Some people like to spam so they choose simon, some people like swords so they go ike, some people like doing gun combos so they play sheik or link, and some people enjoy managing what tools they have available and what they can use and adapt, so they choose characters like hero, splatoon, robin, etc. To me having resources on its own isn't bad, it's just promoting a different style of gameplay, just like having a plasma rifle isn't bad it's just different gameplay than a brawler

That's a good segment you did on Robin. Very well informed. Something interesting about Robin's durability is that they do spawn very useful items that provide a whole plethora of uses for Robin. Giving the character some extra depth as trade-off for limited uses.

Incredible video. If having an art active counted as a passive, shulk would take the # 1, but it depends on how you look at it. If pressing a button to activate the ability excludes it from being a passive, then I would say steve crafting, mining and block placing don't count either. Regardless of logistics, excellent content. Stellar editing , transitions, script, and voiceover.
@sinteleon
@sinteleon 3 жыл бұрын
It's not that pressing a button discounts it, it's that the effect is for/from more than a single move or affects something that isn't a standard move. Steve effectively has 3 different moves from that, not to mention, the resource meter is more than just for crafting and block placing, it's also for anvil, minecart, and boosted Elytra. For the same reason I would also not consider tether grab a passive. Though yes, I would say that mine/block is such an edge case that Kirby's version shouldn't count towards it (as again it only affects a single move). Personally I would treat resources as a passive mechanic itself, and crafting as part of the weapon durability passive instead. (So Steve counts as two different passives, the same way Hero has separate mana and crit passives)

@@Glyphmoney a shoto is an archetype, this applys in multiple facets. Because of its archetypal nature the term shoto must be applied in the context of the game. This is why, by definition of the term, mario is a "shoto" within the context of smash

@@lucashunter-walsh1270 Somewhere, a Ken player just had a cold chill run down their spine when you typed 'Mario is a shoto'. Jokes aside, I def can see what you're saying there. He -does- meet a lot of the criteria, though frankly it's a term I'm not particularly confident in my use. All I know is that the Ken/Ryu/Terry players I spoke to all were very clear that only Ryu/Ken fell under that category, you'd be best served reaching out to that discord channel for a better explanation!

@@Glyphmoney i recommend the video "Character Archetypes in Fighting Games" by Eddventures, it will go more in-depth on the term and its description. But the main point is that a shoto id a very general character and mario is within its definitions as they are applied to smash. The discord is of course allowed to disagree but it comes more from a desire to remain distinct and different than an understanding of the term, as terry is undoubtedly a shoto within the king of fighters game context.
