I was an Alexa household for the past year but since watching your HomePod review, started using Siri more and more. Anything I add to my home automation I want to work with both Alexa and Siri, and I have actually found myself starting to use Siri more. The strict command structure of Alexa throws me sometimes, and I set the whole thing up! Forget about usability for the rest of the household. After watching this video, and seeing the delay with the Google device, I think I will stick to a two assistant system for the foreseeable future. Great video as always!!

Thanks! I’ve found the Google Home to be slightly faster in response to the Google Home Mini for some reason ... still lags behind Alexa and Siri speed-wise.. But in day to day use I’ve drifted much more towards Google and Siri because they’re easier to talk to without needing specific command structures.
@MsSandhu95 жыл бұрын
My Google Home (not Mini) is much faster... as fast as Siri and Alexa. I have noticed it also depends on the internet speed. If I am downloading something on my laptop and/or using my VOIP phone, which all use the same bandwidth, Google Home response time increases somewhat.

I actually watched this video because I am currently making the transition from Google home devices to Alexa. I am doing this for two reasons... 1) I am an Apple user and Alexa supports Apple Music and 2) Alexa’s integration with smart home products is second to none. Example... try finding smart blinds that work with Google assistant. I am sure they exist but I certainly had a hard time finding them. So why not Apple? Well I personally feel like Apple is lagging behind in integration with smart home products which you yourself said in the video but you did also say they are working on it. Fair enough, but my number one reason is Apple does not currently have a smart display. I don’t know how important that is to everyone else but it is extremely important to me.

Great channel. A major difference that should be mentioned is reliance on the cloud. Apple HomeKit works locally, which means its faster and that it will continue to work as long as the hardware works. If you buy a cheap product that works with Google Home or Alexa through a skill, it requires the company that made the product to continue offering this cloud integration. Google has promised local integration, but does still not enable local devices such as a motion sensor to turn on a light. HomeKit devices are generally more expensive though and Homebridge is a great workaround. Apple must still be difficult to work with since Homebridge supports almost everything while less than 5 % of smart home products support HomeKit natively and many Kickstarter products (like Flic) have a hard time living up to promises of HomeKit support.

I’m an Apple Music subscriber but don’t own a HomePod because of the recent integration of Apple Music with Alexa. My plan is to upgrade my home audio system to a higher end setup that integrates Alexa so that I can play Apple Music through the best speakers in my house (perhaps a Sonos 5.1 setup). I also have a Google Home in my living room that I use to answer more complex questions; and a HomeHub in the bedroom. For me there is no perfect option. I find that Google is best for answering complex questions and Alexa is good for home automation requests since it just makes a slight noise when triggering a request as opposed to Google Assistant who has to tell you that they are carrying out your request which I find a tad annoying.

I should have clarified in the video, but I was rating based on how I’d expect a human to answer. Thanks for the comparison. Hope you design a second tier of questions to further differentiate between them. Regional and country accents, kids vs adults, trivia are just a few areas I’ve notice Alexa fails quickly and google is better. Have not used Siri beyond the iphone option and is also a miss. My greatest frustration is still proper speech recognition. We use Alexa for timers, weather and to do list, particularly to run a list of cooked meals in the fridge as a way to help with meal choices and discovery of a forgotten option to consider. I also thought the Model 3 would have had more speech commands but the hit and miss of current technology in a quiet home environment made me realize the road noise, and surroundings even coming through a quiet EV adds another audio recognition challenge to be solved for it to be flawless.
@UndecidedMF5 жыл бұрын
Languages and regional accents can be real stumbling block for some people and are handled better on some assistants over others. Google and Apple have the lead there (far more language support than Amazon). I’m really hoping that Tesla rolls out more voice commands soon. Elon keeps hinting at it, but we haven’t seen anything added in a while. It’s really tricky, but I’ve been amazed at how far this technology has come over the past few years ... and it’s accelerating. As these companies get more people using them it’s increasing the size of the data pool for them to learn from.

Alexa is my go to just because amazon is more of a third party company and not as exclusive, giving them a lot more room for growth. Matt, great video as always! From a Home Automation perspective, do you see any value in having all three, or do you have all three by chance / for the sake of comparison? Even though Siri isn't the greatest between the two, as a Homekit user with devices that are compatible with all three, I don't like the idea of having Alexa or Google Asst. at home, only to rely on Siri when I'm out and about. Even worse, I imagine, would be having one of the AIs in one room (say for smart appliences), while the rest of your home is on a different platform and relies on voice control using a different AI assistant.
@UndecidedMF5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I don’t recommend using multiple like I’m doing. There are two main reasons why I’m doing it: for comparison, and because I’m a little nutty. I think 99% should stick to one assistant for simplicity and ease of use (same commands no matter where you are), but that they should try to buy smart home devices (lights, switches, etc.) that support multiple assistants. It’s always good to leave the door open to switching if you find yourself unhappy with the one you’re using. This is definitely one of those “don’t do as I do” scenarios ;-). It sounds like you’re an Apple/Siri household, which is a good platform that’s getting better every day. Keep an eye out for next weeks video ... I’ve going to be diving into privacy issues when it comes to tech in general and these types of devices. A little hint: Apple’s doing the best right now on the privacy front.

It's very important that people understand what they may be gaining, or giving up (personal stuff) with all tech these days. People tend to overreact to it tho. Google and Amazon have had their well documented run-ins as well, but the whole "privacy issue" is overblown. Google doesn't sell their information and only gives it to the government under court order. The reason for the info they gather is to benefit YOU, not them. Amazon is the same. This is something i-heads love to throw out blindly as an awful thing. And it's certainly scary to think about what could happen if your info got into the wrong people's hands. But the payoff for the consumer is huge and these tech companies could lose everything if they dont have their ducks in a row with personal security.

I recently got an echo dot and a free google nest. I am mostly Apple and so am selling (or gifting) the nest s it is useless to me. I would prefer the Apple device but it is two expensive. I now have 3 echo dots and an echo show 5. Plays my Apple Music and works with my smart devices.

Yes, it’s technically correct, but how often do you respond with the name of the hospital you were born in if someone asked you where you were born? People respond with the city, state, or country. Not the hospital.

I also have Homebridge installed on a dedicated RaspPi. So I can use devices, that do not have homekit support, with my HomePod. "Hey Siri, please hoover the kitchen"... And the robot starts cleaning.

My family atm is all Apple. I like the simplicity of Apple devices I do hate how they control their ecosystem. I prefer Spotify over Apple Music, and I hate how Apple handicaps the user experience (like auto playing when my phone connects to my cars stereo, it will only play Spotify if that was the last media app I was using prior to getting into my car) to make it appear like Apple Music is a superior experience. I think it’s time to jump ship. I just need to figure out a way to convince the wife...

Siri would be the best but Apple wants to maintain their users Privacy so they don’t have many of the features of others.

I am a complete moron but even I managed to setup Alexa so all my stuff is voice controlled. I love that you can communicate between Alexa devices and even from your phone. If you call home and someone is on the phone just use Alexa.

Google Assistant as we know it today was announced in 2016: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Assistant There were voice features before that, but not the AI assistant features. Apple had something similar before they rolled out Siri too.

Google Assistant has been around the longest. It was introduced with the Nexus One in 2009. Just like the siri, Google home also allows for the addition of apps. And what's the deal with using the top of the line Homepod and Sonos speakers vs a little $30 POS sounding Home Mini? Idk. This was the first video of yours I've watched, but you for some things wrong and those skewed against Google
@UndecidedMF5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Google Assistant (the AI combined with voice control) wasn’t introduced until 2016. Before that it was just simplified voice commands. The video wasn’t meant to be a comparison of sound quality of the speakers, but of the voice assistants themselves. My personal preference for which one I like to use the most is Google by far right now. Siri came out with a flash in the beginning, but I quickly gave up on her because of how frustrating her responses were. Since iOS 12 she’s regained a lot of respect from me. So much more capable now and, just like Google, easier to talk to. Alexa was where I starting to put all of my home automation chips when I was building out my smart home setup, but she’s also frustrating with how specific you have to structure commands. And Amazon has had some major security stumbles that make me question how seriously they’re taking my privacy. I’ve got a Google Home Hub in my kitchen, you should check out my review of that, and absolutely love that thing. It’s one of my favorite pieces of tech from 2018.

"Just like the Siri, Google Home also allows for the addition of apps." Apple developers still cannot make apps for the HomePod. Unlike Google Home, or Google Assistant, those developers can create apps, even for those $30 mini smart speakers.
