Yeh, I love this debate. To the people referenced in this chat who say fingerings don’t matter - why do you have a set of fingerings that you’ve worked out and that you use every time you play altissimo then if it doesn’t matter?! It’s such an incomplete part of the equation. I think the player referenced was just trying to say that people think the fingerings will let them play altissimo, which isn’t true.

I just love that fellow Sax KZbinrs follow and comment eachother. We are a small niche community that needs to stick together and support eachother. All you Sax KZbinrs should link up together on co-videos and keep building and nuturing the community and channels. It's quid pro quo!

I agree totally. It is important to understand that our goals are the same but our methods for getting there will be different.

Fingerings don’t matter doesn’t literally mean that there is absolutely no use to them. The point is that the fingerings aren’t the soul determiner of wether or not you can play efficiently because it’s not the same as in the natural register. You can rework your fingerings to be vastly different every year until the end of time because the fingerings don’t matter nearly as much as the embouchure.

Thank's man. I'm fed up of pro saxophonists barking " FiNgErinGs doN't MattEr " when you're asking them how to hit a G#. As if they wanted to mystify that skill. That's pretty annoying that they try to complicate a concept just to fulfill their ego.
@Sirvalorsax3 жыл бұрын
That is an interesting point. A lot of it comes from struggling students that can't get fingerings to work and also the tendency for people to just regurgitate what they've heard without understanding the deeper principles involved

Can you do a lesson for beginners to intermediate players? Any topic. Just something that we can follow and work on.

Wow, how can two great sax players/technicians be so far apart in theory. Just listened to interview with Ben Wendel on Better sax and was informed that fingering does not matter, all about the voicing. I’m at that awful intermediate stage where mastering altissimo is still a bit of a mystery. Two very different theories, hard to know where to focus my time. Anyway, discussion has certainly got me interested and I am guessing you will continue to get some engaging comments from your clip. Cheers, really enjoy your science approach to music. Greg

When people say fingerings don't matter they are usually referring to struggling students putting too much emphasis on one aspect of increasing their range on the instrument. In short, it comes down to embouchure and air pressure, voicing, and fingerings. You can get different kinds of altissimo sounds from the way those 3 are manipulated.

Thank you so much for your videos and knowledge. As far as alto sax are there similarities with fingerings? Will some of the same concepts work? Thank You 🙏🏾
@Sirvalorsax3 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. Tenor is an unusual sax and my book would have just been too long if I added the alto stuff in. An alto version in in the works right now
