I think that it can be okay for straight actors to play gay characters. I think what matters most is that gay voices are part of the creation of the character... that their stories are being told by the right people. An actor is just sort of the face and embodiment of the character... but the writer creates the actual character... and all the other actors have a duty to react to and care for that character as well. If a straight actor is bringing a gay character to life, it's important that they listen to people who have lived/are living that life. Take their stories into account. Also, as you eluded, it might be that an actor hasn't come out or hasn't explored that side of them yet... maybe they're drawn to that character for reasons even THEY don't understand yet. I think so long as queer stories are told authentically, with the input of actual queer people to bring the character to life, the persons standing up there portraying them can identify differently.

I think the point of acting is to be able to play the role of someone very different to yourself, and that includes sexuality. I think someone of any sexuality should be able to play a character of any sexuality. However I do agree with what you said, that the writers need to be informed about the experiences they're writing about. They should do their research, and talk to someone who's actually lived it if possible.

I have never labeled myself, I have never even “come out” as anything - I will fall in love with whoever I fall in love with, I love people, all kinds of people. My family and friends know that and that’s all that matters. My point is, if “coming out” and labeling yourself brings you peace and comfort, by all means do it. But if you are just confident and comfortable with loving people and being open about it, don’t feel pressured to label yourself anything and just go with the flow. 💗

Mak, you should def make a podcast. A lot of your videos are sit down conversations and I LOVE listening to you just talk, wether it be just yourself talking to us, or with mattea, or awesome guests like alayna joy. I love listening to We're Having Gay sex, and I've listened to the episode you've guest starred in so many times. I feel like you would have a lot of listeners, but I also know you're a busy woman. Just know if you've been thinking about it, this is a sign you should do it. We'll support the hell outta you dude. I love you.

1. If a person is trying to figure out their sexuality while in 'school' like teenage years, that can seem more stressful or something that they want to figure out quickly because especially if in a society where that's around the age when people start dating then the stress is on. 2. You can be unsure of your label and still not subscribe to straight simply because you don't want to deal with it, other things happen in life and priorities are different for everyone 3. You can also be unsure about your sexuality just because the right opportunities haven't arised and/or you haven't put yourself into said situations and that's fine. Experimentation happens in different ways and different pace. 4. The whole label things is just for others could be true because it's helping the other understand you 'better' but that doesn't mean a person stops exploring their sexuality just because they have a label (if they want to obvs).

As an actor, I think anyone should be able to play anything (aside from a different race than their own obviously). I don’t care if straight people play gay characters and vice versa. I think women should be able to play as men like men played as women at the start of theatrical entertainment. The whole point is learning to become anything for any role, I think it’s more fun if we can play any part. That being said it should always be done respectfully and in an educated way. If you’re going to play a mentally or physically disabled person, do it justice and consult people who really live that way. If you’re playing a non-binary character, talk to non-binary people and learn how they really live, breathe, and feel. Acting is about telling a story skillfully, respectfully, and passionately.

Mattea, it’s so refreshing to hear someone speak about your needs and wants in relationships.. you are so gracious keeping your personal interest to yourself, and allowing yourself to figure it out; without the pressure or confinement of societal views. I suffered with a lot of internalised homophobia when I was allowing myself to be who I really am; and I wish I had the balls to work through it, even half the way you are.. don’t ever settle, and only strive for greatness, because it’s what you deserve

I stressed way too much about figuring out my labels because I was worried about "lying" to people and it's something I really regret. Labels are great for being a part of a bigger community, but they are not worth it if they make you anxious. I can't recommend enough just allowing yourself to enjoy people as they come and figuring everything else out later.

Love you all! As a pansexual woman, I did want to call out Mattea’s comment about thinking she’s pansexual because she “likes everyone.” I think it’s important that we avoid verbiage that promotes harmful ideas like this. I don’t think she meant it this way, but there is misconception that pansexuals are “attracted to everyone,” which is untrue and implies that we are attracted to a ton of different people. A lot of people assume I’m polyamorous or have a lot of sexual partners. It simply means we have the ability to experience attraction to people of all genders or sexual identities. Myself personally, I am rarely romantically or sexually attracted to people despite having a broad range of options. I am attracted to someone based on my connection to them and not their gender and am very monogamous.

I think it's ok for straight people to portray queer characters sometimes a person is just perfect for a role regardless of their actual sexuality. Of course, it's nice when queer actors are the ones that fit the character but sometimes they aren't, and as long as the person who is cast plays the part in a respectful way and is true to the character I don't have a problem with it.
@loreto37432 жыл бұрын
I feel like I’m in the same journey as Mattea, honestly trying to label myself just makes me overwhelmed. I know I’m part of and amazing community and calling myself queer is what makes me feel comfortable. Maybe it will change in the future, maybe not, either way is about the journey not the destination.

I have no idea about my sexuality, I'm somewhere on the asexual spectrum I guess, maybe aromantic too. What's good about labels is that there is a decription attached and I can say what fits and what doesn't. I'm 28 and started to think about it only this year, so took me awhile. The worst thing would be to be in a relationship (especially longterm and commited) and figuring that out only then, because it's not fair to the other person.
@jaginaiaelectrizs63412 жыл бұрын
Well .. I think there is some grace or leeway that is due if they're not doing it on purpose, like..if they just didn't know. What _really_ would be fair is if someone knew they were just figuring things out or had already figured themself out, but they didn't communicate that or the just went ahead and lead someone on anyway. But maybe that's just me? 😁

I've seen straight and gay actors play against orientation flawlessly so it's a non-issue for me because that's what acting is about: being convincing (or at least interesting) as a fictional human. For me the problem lies in the intent of the project and the competence of the execution.

Personally, I think that there are enough gay/queer white actors that are just as good as that straight white actor that could’ve easily been chosen. So I’m not really sure why they went with him. Yes he was good, but he was straight and honestly that was obvious through his acting. It was like I was watching a straight guy act a gay character, the only queerness came from the fact that he explicitly stated he liked guys. That could come down to directing too, and why the media feels the need to make queer culture palatable for cishets by removing queerness. But a gay actor might have had something more to say about this character, and made better choices in portraying him in a way that’s relatable for the larger majority of queers that aren’t straight-passing. So why not have a queer actor? Especially in a movie highlighting the queer experience?

I think it's fine for straight people to play gay characters. Like someone else said, it's more important that gay voices are included but it doesn't have to be the actor. Plus, it's like the whole straight-author-writing-gay-characters controversy. Some people might be in the closet, and they shouldn't have to out themselves to get a job or to express themselves. I will say that I think there's a bit of a difference for trans characters (I've read quite a few critiques about how using cis male actors to play trans women reinforces the "man in a dress" stereotypes), though passing and being in the closet and forced disclosure are probably going to be issues too, but of course that's more for the trans community to decide.
@tomnorton84992 жыл бұрын
Best actor gets the job, other wise you're willing to compromise and settle for less. For example say a gay actor better fits a straight character and a straight person fits the gay character better would you force them to switch their characters to fit this model.
