The first time I noticed the "hybrid" style was Michael Phelps first Olympics, and I called it "loping" and a swim coach at my pool called it that as well. In looking back, it goes back to Matt Biondi. I did find an old clip of Mark Spitz, and he was breathing every other arm pull, but for sure, he was not loping/galloping. The thing that sets it apart from standard freestyle is that the arm pull is not on an even cadence/beat. The breathing arm stays extended slightly longer, and then when the other arm recovers, there is a quick 1, 2 pull and then repeat. With the video of Katie, that is Ariarne Titmus swimming in the back ground, and she uses an even cadence arm stroke. The style difference is striking to me. Ariarne also breathes on a 2, 2, 3 or 4 cycle rather than on every other breath. Pretty much all of the male swimmers use gallop style. This is just after you show that woman who bobs her head a bit, around 3 minutes. Maybe half of the women do, Summer McIntosh is another woman that swims this way. Along with the uneven cadence, the gallop style is characterized by a slight porpoising motion of the swimmer. The head comes up a bit more out of the water than common, and when the breathing side arm recovers, the head and shoulders actually submerge slightly. This submersion results in slightly less drag, in part because of surface tension of the water and a reduced bow wave.

Thank you! Do you set pace by feel or do you have test sets to figure out pace at 70 vs 80 vs 99%... Should the goal be to keep same pace from first to last rep? Also great race!!

My pleasure! With experience you know what those percentages are by feel but yes if you are in the beginning it would be a good idea to do a test . A classic test would be a T-20..basically a 20minute swim trying to accumulate the most distance you can in that time..get your average pace per 100 from that ..that pace will be roughly your 80% effort .. the goal in those sessions would be to get faster as the percentages increase , even if it’s just by a second or 2

@@siskatrainingsystems Thanks for the reply. I was asking about rest between sections (10x100, 8x100 etc.) not rest between repetitions. I'm guessing there is no rest other than 20seconds between 10x100 and 8x100, 15 seconds between 8x100 and 6x100

Actually it’s not that big of a deal ..you can totally regroup after each section before attacking the next batch of 100s ..so after the 10 totally take a minute before going for the 8

@@siskatrainingsystems Great thanks. My reason for asking is because i have to adjust my watch that i use for interval times between each section. I am planning to pursue the training you outlined in this video.

How important is it that the rests remains short?
@siskatrainingsystems

The goal needs to be short , but if your fitness is low you can have more rest and build up to short
