In his autobiography, Ebert says they loved each other like brothers...with sibling rivalry. Before each taping, they wouldn't discuss the movies on that program (so they'd be "fresh"on the show) instead they'd shoot one-liners at each other to warm up for the camera. Look at the end of this and see how they're riffing off each other and having fun.

Anyone with a sense of humor can see the humor underlying all of this - the "vicious" barbs towards each other and Protestants. Ebert comes back cleverly with a reference to Siskel's heritage (intl. bankers). They're simply dueling with biting wit and it's fun to see. Some here are taking what they're saying too seriously. BTW, thanks, mikerjohnson, for posting.

Actually, they got along very well off-screen. They were such good pals that they could have spats and arguments like any good friends (and call each other names) and yet still be best of friends. They didn't always agree on films, which is what made the show worth watching- divergent opinions.
