Actually for me this shows that they didn't hate each other. But that they felt comfortable enough with each other that they could insult each other. For example I can insult the shit out of my best friend and he also can do the same to me without having hard feelings at all.

These guys weren't nearly as stuffy as their reputation. Siskel going to the mat for the original Mortal Kombat movie and Ebert praising Blade II to high heaven (and rightfully so) paints a very different portrait than what one would expect. They were good, knowledgeable, educated critics who also knew (and loved) great entertainment when they saw it. Miss these guys..

In his autobiography, Ebert says they loved each other like brothers...with sibling rivalry. Before each taping, they wouldn't discuss the movies on that program (so they'd be "fresh"on the show) instead they'd shoot one-liners at each other to warm up for the camera. Look at the end of this and see how they're riffing off each other and having fun.

Anyone with a sense of humor can see the humor underlying all of this - the "vicious" barbs towards each other and Protestants. Ebert comes back cleverly with a reference to Siskel's heritage (intl. bankers). They're simply dueling with biting wit and it's fun to see. Some here are taking what they're saying too seriously. BTW, thanks, mikerjohnson, for posting.
