that scene where he tries to describe music to her breaks my heart every time

3:06 Bravo Roger Ebert for mentioning this point. The water scenes hardly count for perspective. The love is imbalanced because we don't understand Sarah's life.

Great movie and Hurt should've won his 2nd Oscar but they gave it to Newman for The Color of Money which wasn't great.

@Derby14 It's a really great film, no explosions, car chases or cgi, just a good old fashioned story....

I remember being disappointed by this movie when it first came out, because I knew the play so well. Our high school had done it and won the state play competition. I felt like the movie cut too much from the play and tried too hard to be hot and sexy. I also didn’t like the way the camera shots were set up to where you couldn’t even see what they were signing half the time. I thought, Oh, finally a movie that deaf people can watch and understand because it has sign language, and it was so obviously filmed for hearing audience, that they didn’t even set the shots to be able to see the signing. You can see it in the clip here from where they’re dancing.

Children of a Lesser God is one of the best movies ever. Strong performances by the leads, great chemistry., Ebert was just over thinking it as usual. Her perspective is there, but she's deaf. We get her perspective through William Hurt's character towards the end when he comes around to realize he didn't understand it previously. Like the kid in his class that will not budge. He finally realizes that he was trying to change her to fit his world, instead of understanding hers. I am sure a book version would have been able to give her perspective better, but it's a movie and you can only have so much silence.

Should be considered a classic but has become somewhat forgotten for whatever reason.

Roger nails it right here, as he usually does. I liked the film, but there was something I couldn't quite put my finger on that prevents this good film from being a great film. Roger puts it into simple perspective here, in that the film all but ignores *her* perspective. Still a good film, though, with Oscar-caliber performances from both William Hurt and Marlee Matlin (who won Best Actress for this).

I don't find it hard to believe at all. William Hurt is just that serious of an actor. He's really one of the very best actors of his generation, and really does not get that much credit anymore.

I'm sure any actor had to learn from something for a movie. Keanu Reeves had to learn kung fu for six months for the role of Neo. Eventhough, the role was meant for Brandon Lee, but died in '94, RIP. Like River Phoenix as well. In the Interview with the Vampire, but he passed away, and Christian Slater ended up taking the role of Mallory.
