Tom Selleck as King Ferdinand, the guy with three ships and a little lady.

This movie was a laugh riot. I loved the cigar smoking scene with the native chief played by Branscombe Richard, the legendary stuntman who has a very recognizable face.

Since this film wasn't a big hit, I suppose no kid in school ever brought up the scene where Columbus says they can behead him if land isn't sighted in three days and at the last minute land is spotted while his head is on the chopping block. I'd love to have seen a kid bring that up and the teacher wondering where he got that nonsense from.

It's funny that Gene calls it Christopher Columbus: The Movie. The Salkinds had produced Superman: The Movie and Santa Claus: The Movie before getting to this one. Seems like they backed away from using the same kind of title but still wanted to have a colon in it. This was directed by John Glen who had previously directed all the 1980s James Bond films. His career all but ended here. Ridley Scott's 1492 came out 2 months after this and did even worse in the U.S., but a lot better overseas. 1492 also got 3 stars from Ebert vs. 1 star for Columbus. It appears Siskel never reviewed 1492 on the show or in print. Hard to understand just who thought there was enough demand for Columbus movies to release two in the same year.

I think they just had to do a 500 year anniversary Columbus flick. Now if Mel Gibson would have directed/starred it could have been great..but then Mad Mel had already done The Bounty probably no way to get him back on an old ship again.

@@erichaynes7502 There was another one later that year by Ridley Scott, remember? Oh, I see jedijones mentioned it, I didn't see that before.

Siskel mentioned something about 1492 on the Worst of 92 show when this came up.

The film was called Christopher Columbus: The Discovery, another Salkind production, the last one they made. And can you believe they got Marlon Brando in this? After what happened with Superman?

HBO aired them both, I think. I believe the Ridley Scott one got a Saturday night premiere.

Brando had attacked his previous film The Freshman, which was great. Why didn't he do that with this?
@ricardocantoral76723 жыл бұрын
Brando attacked The Freshman because the producers didn't pay his salary.

I had the displeasure of seeing this bloated production in the theater, one of the most boring movies I’d ever seen. If I had to choose between watching paint dry or seeing this movie again, I’d pick the former in a heartbeat.
