Thank god I never saw the short version and never will. The original version 3h and 49m is a masterpiece and one of the best movies of all time. This movie is by far one of the worst victims of Hollywood botching up its run time and also completely disrespecting the magnificent score by Ennio Morricone, that was nothing short of being Oscar worthy.

It's such a scandal what happened to this film. As James Woods put it, "Three weeks before the film is released, they have the assistant editor of Police Academy chop it to fucking ribbons." The Ladd Company even screwed up the Academy Awards paperwork, rendering Ennio Morricone's score ineligible. I wish Leone had lived to see the restored version hailed as a masterpiece.

This is actually their review of the short version, which is heavily criticized for plot holes and for over simplifying it's non linear narrative. It's the long version they really love. In fact, Gene called the long version the best film of 1984 and Roger gave it 4 stars. Actually in his video guide books, he gave the short version 1 star and the long version 4 stars.

I hate to say it but they don't make films as good as this today. This is Sergio Leone's finest film and unfortunately his final masterpiece. I've never seen the American theatrical version and it's hard to find these days. I disagree with Siskel & Ebert as I find the childhood scenes superb and the most memorable scenes in the film. Once Upon A Time In America features another wonderful score by Ennio Morricone, perhaps it's his best work. I love this film, it's a masterpiece.

This is the thing: When the film came out in the US, not everyone knew it had been recut. I saw it on its opening showing in Los Angeles and loved it, too, because I had no idea there was some longer version or what the structure of that is. I became obsessed, read everything I could, got a copy of the script, so I could see what was meant to be. And then, of course, Warner Bros. released Leone's version and yes that was a masterpiece. But I still feel to this day that certain moments in the short version work better, especially Elizabeth McGovern on the train pulling down the shade - it's a bit longer and more emotional in the short version.

It is not strictly, however, a gangster movie, but a film about nostalgia, betrayal, love, and disillusionment. One of the greatest films ever made. Which Hollywood rewarded with zero Oscars, partly because that same year they pinned the Oscars on another film, an American one, _Amadeus_ . It has always been known that films awarded by Hollywood respond more to business than to the quality and artistry of the films.

The American Film Industry made Sergio Leon cut the film from 3Hrs 50Mins down to just over 2 Hours for general release in 1984 because they thought it too long , but in doing so the film lost a lot of it's plot and so was panned by film critics

The longer version of the film has a repulsive scene where one of the gang members decides to interrupt a bank robbery by raping one of the female bank tellers; the rape goes on for a full six minutes in extreme close up, so we don't miss a moment of the woman's suffering. Then the movie proceeds merrily along again, and we're supposed to like the creep that just brutally raped a helpless girl. There's a lot wrong with the mentality of the director Sergio Leone to insist on that scene, to have it go on for that long, and to expect the audience to continue to like this sociopathic rapist afterwards. Either he has contempt for women, the audience, or both.
@martianmanhunter37
@martianmanhunter37 3 жыл бұрын
Wasn't the woman in that scene an accomplice of their crime? She was some sort of masochist who wanted some sexual thrills. I don't know if that scene qualifies as a rape. She even becomes James Woods' lover later in the film. However, De Niro's character does rape his childhood crush in the back seat of the car in a really uncomfortable and pretty long scene so your point still stands. I don't think Leone expected us to like his character afterwards (at least I didn't after the car scene).
@bubabubu5395

@@martianmanhunter37 you are right. Carol was never raped. I don't know why so many people wrote that she was raped. She told noodles that she wanted intmacy and when he resisted she hit him and made him what she wanted. it was clear. Deborahs rape scene was so long and disturbing that even deniro said that "it made its purpose but then go on and on". I read the script and on script noodles "was stoned by his own violence" "he couldn't face her(Deborah)" noodles reggret was presence but on the other hand Sergio called Deborahs rape "love scene" "it is violence and this violence is most desperate of all" "even though it was rape it was from respect(what??). This is love,love" so I don't know rape is kind of condemned but still romanticised wich is very bad thing to do.

I saw the long version and felt how they're feeling about this one. If the little boys are bad characters I didn't root for, why would telling me it's Robert Deniro beforehand make me care, it felt like it exploited the fact that Robert deniro is a well liked actor to make you care about these wretched kids but it didn't work on me I just saw it as Robert Deniro in this terrible film with no redeemable characters. Very depressing. Someone tell me why I'm wrong. How is a film like Bergman's Serpents Egg worse than this movie, they both felt equally depressing and unwhole as art pieces. All the bad, in rich detail, but no beauty or good. Maybe it's relying on context of other movies to fill in the gaps? Isn't that by definition an incomplete artistic statement then, just as they say with Bergman's Egg? Painting people as wretched scumbags and nothing else, the only recognizable "good" quality being Robert Deniros face that we like? I don't get it.

The family members of Sergio Leone are still looking for additional 30 minutes footage of this masterpiece film that are still missing from the directors cut. Incorrect. The director's cut is 229 minutes - THAT was Leone's version. Everything else is BS and was cut long before he released his final cut, which is why that footage only exists in work print form.
@michaelperkowski641
@michaelperkowski641 8 ай бұрын
Your wrong his original cut of the film was 6 hours long. It was Martin Scorsese and Sergio daughters are the one that got 229 cut of the movie released. The wanted the six hours version out but a lot of footage his been very damaged and can't be restored. So this version of the film is best they can do with what had available.

That’s because whoever posted this, added the footage from the dvd to the original review and “enhanced” it. The Siskel & Ebert footage is grainier and the film footage is crisp and clean.

Leave it to U.S. studio suits to screw up a movie. 2 hrs., 20 minutes vs 3 hrs., 45 minutes. Two different films. Track down the reason and it usually comes out to greed, money, and lack of maturity on the American side.

@@haineshisway Wrong. American film making is all about money. Good plot scenes are cut so a movie can be downgraded from R to PG-13 to make more money at the box office. That wasn't the norm in the 70's when art form was more important. The whole industry has been compromised by Corporate America. At 3 hrs. 45 minutes there has to be an intermission at the halfway point, people gotta pee.
@haineshisway
@haineshisway 3 жыл бұрын
@@marvinthiessen3454 As I keep saying, all you people who are commenting haven't seen the short version. It didn't get a pg-13, it was an R. I told you the reason they cut it. And that was the reason. Rail all you like about corporate, especially for today's movies.

@@haineshisway Arguing over 2 versions of a flawed masterpiece is pointless. My rant about corporate control is true, like it or not. My guess is you weren't around in the 1970's when American film making was exceptional compared to the modern cash-cow formula. Millennial or Gen-Z?

Self indulgent long and not very well put together sometimes. The second half is way better than the first. Waste of some great acting. Frustrating because just when you’re about to like it it becomes a little bit juvenile and long-winded and sex/violence does not always make sense or seem necessary to what is happening in the big picture, so you’re about to click the thing off your screen and then here comes some reacting in your hang around again but then you have the same expressed 15 minutes later. It has some good moments but it’s definitely not a classic and there’s something to be said for the acting but it just doesn’t come together well enough. I don’t fully understand why the girl of his dreams goes with someone else who does all the nasty stuff that he does and she turn him down for. Guys are trying to kill him with being in the movie and you’re not sure who they are or who sent them and I don’t mean that in the sense of you have to wait for the payoff I mean that in a sensitive they had no character they’re just angry guys.
