I love love love The Mirror Crack'd - so entertaining! Angela Lansbury as Miss Marple, Kim and Elizabeth are great together too! Very entertaining! Altered States was really good too and introduced William Hurt.

They both got Altered States wrong. The point isn't the story or the special effects. It's how obsessive and driven William Hurt is about his work and how afraid Blair Brown is of that. Their performances are very, very good.

Siskel 17:00 refers to Hudson et al 'hiding in a closet'. He didn't know how right he was on that one.

As for the movie Scanners, well you can't convince me that David Cronenberg wasn't inspired by X-Men comic books! Micheal Ironside who plays the villain was always a Jack Nicholson wannabe! I kept expecing him to shout HEEEEEEERRRRE'S JOHNNNY! Altered States is as Leonard Maltin called it-The Wolfman Meets The Time Machine. William Hurt plays his character like a paranoid schizophrenic. The two films both fall under the category of genetic sci fi.

I can see the comparison but ... Na ... Ironside always had his own thing going on .. He was much more stoic and less unhinged with his acting style. He was a cool actor..... I always dig it when he shows up in something. Funny ... you mention X-Men .. I like his bit role as the Naval commander in X-Men First class. Good stuff!

X-men didn't invent the idea of psychic powers, everything in the movie Scanners could have been drawn from earlier studies into parapsychology and ESP and pseudo-scientific theories about them etc. It just uses them in a relatively grounded fashion as part of a thriller about shady corporations and espionage.

'Scanners' is still my favourite Cronenberg escape-aid. Love it's 'documentary' style look/feel. Big Pharma ''was'' in the news back then - the Thalidomide drug. Common Side Effects: [in 1-10% of users] Confusion, depressed mood, reduced coordination, difficulty breathing, vomiting, dry mouth, rashes, dry skin, fever, weakness, lung inflammation, lung disease, Heart Failure and.......................... a sense of Unwellness !! No-oooooooo $h!t ? Saved the 'most' informative info for last. Oh. Also caused babies to be born with physical deformities !! Nevermind... Ker-Ching !!!!
