I never would have noticed the muted complements. But the use of near neutrals, colorful grays, as I like to think of them, is something I play with. Color theory is wonderfully complex, thanks for the lesson.

Alfred Sisley is in fact an impressionist (and realist) by all existing standards! It's a pity his life was short compared to Monet. Sisley created some 400 or so masterpieces compared to the overwhelming 2500 (or so) masterpieces of Claude Monet. Thank you so much for the presentation, excellent as always!

Yesterday I hung a frames canvas print of Sisley's Bridge at Villeneuve La Garenne in my bedroom so that I can look at it first thing in the morning and last thing at night. I started looking at his works after reading John Rewald's book, 'Camille Pissarro Letter to His Son Lucien.' In his letters Pissaro mentions Sisley, and other [now] famous artists struggling to make a living from impressionism. Their day to day struggle with dealers selling their work was quite a revelation and we often assume that the fame they have today was what they had in their lifetime. The reality of their fame was, however, something that only a few of them enjoyed and benefited from at the time.

Incredible. Such insight discerning the painting - the sky and the subjects below. Yes, the two small figures are the central focal point of the painting with lines pointing to them while the sky balances out the weightedness of the buildings and trees below. Thank you putting up the color wheel and then one wheel on top of the other. Woah-ho: muted colors indeed. Is that an unused aqueduct or incomplete or bombed out bridge? Nonetheless, it is interesting that that is included in the painting: how unusual/different the painting would be without it, perhaps. That aqueduct or bridge adds significant visual weight to the forefront of the painting. Thank you for another terrific video.

I never heard of Sisley, to be honest, but I like his style. As you mentioned he really does capture the lights and shadows very well. I was rather surprised by the difference between the B&W image and the colour image of the painting. I did not expect them to feel so different. Even though the tonal range is limited, the use of blue does really lend a sense of shadow and depth. I never realised how powerful blues were at doing that until a few months ago when I was doodling a tree in watercolours using a yellow and a cerulean. I painted the shadow side in cerulean just for the fun of it. Cerulean is a relatively mid-toned to light-toned colour, so I was quite surprised to find the tree taking shape and the cerulean really accentuating the shadow side; I did not anticipate or expect that all!

I love cerulean...what a beautiful color. It is amazing how color can play a part in manipulating what we see. It sounds like that tree sketch was a great ah-ha moment!

@@JillPoyerdFineArt It was a great ah-ha moment; I couldn’t phrase it better myself 😂. I haven’t got round to using it more in painting, but I do want to try using it as my “darkest” colour to see how the painting would turn out. It’s interesting to try it as my shadow paint. If the effect is not appealing or not strong enough, then I can always mix it with earth reds and earth oranges to get soft greys and soft blacks.

Sisley is my favorite among the impressionists. His 'Avenue of Chestnut Trees near La Celle Saint Cloud' is breathtaking.

@@JillPoyerdFineArt I was fortunate to have seen it during the 1984 Olympic art festival in LA. 135 paintings were assembled to portray a 'guided tour from Paris to the countryside'. Tickets were $5. We were allowed 35 minutes in the meandering gallery. I spent over 20 minutes in front of it. The explosion of greens was an experience I will keep forever.

Hi jill, how are you? I love your space of art in this platform. I feel your connection with art and your exquisite knowledge. First of all, I want to thank you for all I am learning. I love art but i dont know where can I study? I live in Perú and I dont have support of many artists. When I study with them in workshops, they hide a lot of things about art like composition, descriptive, color theory, technique, etc. They like the money thats all. I want you recommend where can I study art. For example a public university where I can pay it for?

I'm well, thank you! It's so hard to suggest where to study because every school, site, facility is so different and it depends on what you want to do with your art. In some ways, I might suggest finding a local artist that you admire and seeing if they offer classes. A lot can be done online (I teach online....) but sometimes that in-person experience works best at least initially. It depends on the person. If you want to go to a proper art school (sounds like you may?), it depends on what kind of art you're drawn to. There are private ateliers that would lean more towards traditional art and instruction, while some art schools gear more towards abstract, edgy, and installation art. I suppose I'm saying, think about what kind of art you're drawn to and where you want to go with your art and then read over my suggestions above again for guidance. Does that help?

*Thanks* for the video. Was ambivalent about Sisley, color would be a way to approach his work. Superimposing a color wheel 180 degrees onto itself is a good explanation of complementary greys. Points out the colors aren't exactly complementary otherwise the resultant wheel would be a continuous number five middle grey. Realize these are representations of pigments with a limited gamut.

My favorite Impressionist. His was another case of an artist who was largely ignored during his lifetime resulting in a life of poverty. It was only after his death, and not long after, that he was "discovered" by the buying public and his paintings became very much in demand. What a pity...
