This classic song sung in a beautiful classic way by Sissel. What a treat! It is sung with reverence and awe in a pure angelic voice. What more can one ask! It is a foretaste of what heaven is all about. Praise God for giving us a gift like Sissel!

GORGEOUS! I love the idea of setting the "Ave Maris Stella" to "Noel Nouvelet!" How did I never think of that? And what a heavenly voice too.

Excellent, even if a bit commercial at the expense of genuine spirituality. Fab voice! Still, the message is there. I hope people are drawn to the message, as well as the wonderful voice.

Because if they have microphones above the choir the instruments will be captured in these mics aswell. When they have individual mics. the balance between instruments and vocals adjusted in the mixer. In my opinion this is absolutely the best way in a church :-)) And i agree it is just beautiful, original Sissel keeps surprising .........

this is heavenly. every time i listen to it, i feel awe. i love the way sissel starts singing from the balcony, as if an angel from up above. and the choir is the perfect addition to her voice. the orchestra, voices, place and atmosphere - everything just creates such an unforgettable experience!! btw, i was surprised to find out that the music was composed by edward grieg. i wonder how the original hymn sounded.

In this performance, the text _Ave, maris stella_ has been set to the 16th century French carol melody _Noel nouvelet_. You can find a number of peformances of this carol on KZbin. The Edvard Grieg setting of the _Ave, maris stella_ is very different than the one here.

The Grieg- Ave Maris Stella. (St. John's College Choir.) is a lovely clear version with power of multiple voices and some nice leads... the Sissel by comparison makes that look a pale weak insipid version with such power yet purity of her voice - one would hardly recognise as being the same piece.

Please don't have a problem with the pronunciation. Liturgical Latin is usually from the Italian tradition but they are others like Germanic Latin (often used in performances of the Brahms Requiem etc.). In the German way coeli is pronounced "tsoeli". I'm not sure if there is a Nordic pronunciation or variation but if everyone in the performance is using the same there shouldn't be a problem.

Wow, the first half of this was absolutely spell-binding and transcendent -- and then the infernal rock beat started in and it's like everything that came before it was obliterated. Why, oh why, do they think we are so stupid and tasteless, that everything must be made into "rock" music??!

She is terrific, but how do you pronounce her last name?
@slashdotism6 жыл бұрын
It's hard to explain in English since you don't have the kj sound but if you're able to read IPA it's pronounced [ˈsɪsːl̩ ˈçʏʁçəˌbøː] the ç is the kj sound and it's pronounced by placing your tongue in the same position as you're about to say YEAH but instead of going through with it you're just pushing air through that initial tongue and jaw placement and it becomes sort of a whispering sound. If you're familiar with German, it's the same sound as the ch part in Ich or Dichter. Norwegian Y is another hard one for English speakers since it doesn't have a clear equivalent. Same with the ø. Actually her whole name is a nightmare to pronounce for foreigners. So there.

She has a voice like the cantor at the parish I go to. Great voice! The only problem I have with this version is that she pronounces some of the Latin words incorrectly, for example, coeli should be pronounced 'chéli,' not 'kehli.' The latter would only be correct in classical Latin, but this is liturgical Latin, which has a lot of the same pronunciation rules as Italian. C followed by e, ae, oe, or i is always pronounced like ch.

Very beautiful - unfortunately the chant is NOT that of the gregorian hymn "Ave Maris Stella". It is the tune of a French carol called "Noel Nouvelet"!
@maryfrance97837 жыл бұрын
Composers honored other composers long ago by appropriating tunes. Noel Nouvelet is one such song whose tune was based on an older one. Many American cowboy songs are based on older Irish folk songs. The lyrics were changed to suit the new place and culture. With some old tunes, we are not certain who borrowed from whom.
