Sissel Kyrkjebø - Våren (Last Spring) - 2014

Sissel Kyrkjebø performing "Våren" ("Last Spring") by Edvard Grieg at a TV-concert from Eidsvoll, Norway in 2014. In the period between 1877 - 1880, Grieg produced a set of songs as his Op. 33 on texts by a man some called the peasant-poet of Norway, Aasmund Vinje (1818 - 1870). The composer had been greatly inspired by the then-late poet's verses, so much so that after completing the set, he decided to arrange two of its songs for string orchestra, this one The Last Spring and The Wounded Heart. The last Spring is a sad piece of music. The text tells of a dying man who is aware his is observing his last spring.
Sissel, the international singing sensation from Norway, is widely regarded as one of the finest and most talented sopranos in the world. Her crystalclear voice has made Sissel a national institution in Norway. Sissel has sung all over the world, selling over ten million solo albums. She contributed the haunting vocal tracks for the soundtrack to Titanic. She has been doing great duets with singers like Placido Domingo, Charles Aznavour, Bryn Terfel, Jose Carreras, Russell Watson, Neil Sedaka and Josh Groban. A very remarkable voice you will only hear once in your lifetime.

I always loved it. Confirms my basic philosophy in life of epicureanism. It's the little pleasures in life that bring happiness. We don't need a new Cadillac or splendid yacht . Grieg wrote the piece in his bedroom overlooking a magnificent valley. It's beauty that brings joy and happiness, not material wealth.
