She was so important to the history of Rock n Roll that guys in Metal bands know who she is. A good friend of mine who plays in a doom metal band has a white epiphone SG with the gold hardware, bixby tailpiece and 3 pickups, just because of this piece of film here. This was recorded on a soundstage by people who understood how important it was to get here doing her act for future generations to see.

A young Eric Clapton was in this crowd. He said after seeing her he decided to dedicate his life to playing the Blues. So though Sister Tharpe didn't play rock-n-roll perse' her fingerprints are all over it. If Clapton didn't see true authentic American Blues perhaps he doesn't pursue that genre so singlemindedly and doesn't join The Yardbirds. If Clapton doesn't join The Yardbirds then Jeff Beck doesn't replace him. If Beck doesn't join then his friend Jimmy Page doesn't join The Yardbirds and end up with their record contract that he ultimately turns into Led Zeppelin. Not to mention the influence she had on Hendrix. So yeah, Sister Rosetta Tharpe is kind of a big deal.

Wow - Sister Rosetta - great that you've gotten to her - she was rock and roll before there was rock and roll!! So far, far ahead of her time - A Woman first of all AND with an electric guitar - She was considered the the "Godmother of Rock and Roll" inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2018 as an Early Influencer. This performance I think was in England and she was touring with Muddy Waters there at this time., She was much more well known and appreciated there than in her own country, which was true for so many American blues players. This was from a performance in England in 1964. In the early sixties, British college students somehow discovered black American blues and gospel performers, most of whom were older, and had been ignored or forgotten in America. A lot of them traveled to England and took advantage of this new-found popularity, and found extremely enthusiastic audiences everywhere they went, something they'd never enjoyed on that scale in the States. Quite a few teamed up and did fairly large group package tours of the UK together. It must have been very gratifying for them, late in life, to hear that kind of cheering and applause, especially since so many of them had been forgotten by that time at home.

A few years back when Robert Plant (Led Zepplin) and Alison Krauss made an album together called 'Raising Sand'.. there is a song on there called Sister Rosetta and it's all about her. I know lots of fellas liked to claim to be rock legends, but she was before them and they were eating her dust. :-) Try out... "Up Above My Head." Ooh... Sister Rosetta was born in 1915 in Arkansas. She was a a singer,songwriter,guitarist and recording artist in the ‘30’s & 40’s. Her gospel recordings contained a mixture of spiritual lyrics and rhythmic accompaniment that was a precursor to rock and roll. This performance seems to be in England where she went on tour in the early ‘60’s.

Brother Jamel, many of the commentors here have shared much wonderful information about Sister Rosetta. I'm actually a bit surprised that you haven't known about her before now. Do yourself a favor and go ahead and Google the good sister Rosetta. There are entire books written about her. She was a huge influence on rock and roll. And thanks to the way things were at the time, she was, for the most part, unknown in her own country. Fortunately, the UK and Europe recognized and appreciated talent, regardless of where it came from or the color of the package it arrived in. I only learned of her in the last 10 years or so. The more I learn about her, the more impressed I am by her. This has been a favorite of mine since the first time I saw it many years ago; Sister Rosetta Tharpe bringing a little Gospel; singing about Noah and the Flood. She was a major influence in America during the thirties and forties, and Elvis was a big fan. Later, in the sixties as her career was waning in America, she was invited to England to perform with a jazz band which reignited her career. She ended up touring Europe extensively for many years. She certainly left her mark and opened a lot of doors for other women and for people of color!

She was from a little hole-in-the-wall called Cotton Plant, Arkansas, and grew up singing Gospel and Blues music all around the area. Started writing her own music in the late 1940's, and became world famous as a Jazz / Rock artist (and one of the pioneers of the movement) in the 1950's. She was, to our loss, called home in 1973.
